Studio Visit with Jim Phillips

Спорт

Jim Phillips is single-handedly responsible for quite possibly the most recognizable skate graphic of all time: the Santa Cruz “Screaming Hand.” With roots in comic art, surf, car, and, of course, skate culture, Jim’s graphics have become an institution over the past 40 years - he’s influenced just about every skate artist and has helped create the look and feel of the skate graphic as we know it.
Now celebrating 30 years of his iconic Screaming Hand, Jim takes us around his studio and describes his humble beginnings as a comic artist, his relationship with Santa Cruz, and the future of the Screaming Hand. If you’re even remotely interested in skate graphics, you’re gonna need to watch this.

Great stuff! Yeah Jimbo has indeed inspired many a creative misfit (including myself). Misfit being meant as a complimentary term as these are more often than not the people who think differently enough to bring something fresh and worthwhile to the table. Unfortunately the 'look and feel of the skate graphic as we know it' has in my opinion been tarnished by many skate brands favouring commerciality over originality these days and short changing their audience with weak, uninspiring, or just safe, trend following graphics lacking in any real substance. There are thankfully still a handful that continue to impress, but I feel there's definitely a general need for skate brands to try harder to stretch the boundaries with their artwork rather than just playing it safe and delivering the same tired old imagery.

I love your artwork, I've purchased quite a bit and road Santa Cruz boards, grew up in Capitola ..went to Capitola Elementary school. One thing though, I don't understand why you don't recognize Ed "Big Daddy" Roth as being an influence. It's obvious his art style left a major imprint on you. Best Wishes!
