Studio Tour: Richard Devine

Музыка

In this great video tour, Atlanta-based musician Richard Devine shows us around his studio. He is well known for his heavily layered approach to sound design and on visiting his studio it's easy to see why: you could probably name any synth from recent years and it will pop up somehwhere in a rack, on the floor or nestled between several keyboards, with appearances from Moog, Korg, Nord, Roland, Elektron and more. Devine also shows us around his modular synth setup whihc includes units by Doepfer, Harvest Man, Bubble Sound, Synthesis Technology and others.

    I like the idea of having multiple discreet (but still inter-connectable if need be) modular systems, rather than one big wall. Preserves the strange intimacy of huddling up in front of a eurorack case.

    +hopskotchrecords. late reply but most of these synths are lov voltage input/output devices that don't gather up that much more electricity than a single tv or a computer.

    I love your patches with the modular and I'm really happy to see that you have the Rhizome. It's the creation of the boy friend of my sister and his twin brother (Nicolas and Julien Piau). Nice I'm gonna get mine back from France and use it also! I love your music and you're good inspiration for me! Karine / Twisted Kala

    Kala PsyMagic I also had a Rhizome, it stopped working after a few days, great workflow but no support these days. I ended up using the innards to build a spare PC, which was an expensive lesson.

    for fun! or to more easily follow what is patched where when you've got a jumble of wires. some people go as far as color coding different signal paths like cv versus audio, but usually one will just grab the first available cable to make a patch.

    +James Mccarthy Cos sometimes you buy red ones, or yellow ones, or grey ones, or whatever....also sometimes the modulars come with wires. Not much more logic to it than that, really. It's a bit like why different people have different haircuts. The reason is generally just "cos they do".

    Wow, just... Wow... What a load of garbage. :) Seriously, go push that shit somewhere else, buddy. "Do not FAIL" my ass... So that's why the Trashcan has failed in sales? Because it's "Best for professional work"? Compare those old Firepros to the new Pascal Titans and realize that Apple and "professonal" has long gone.

  • @theeltea

    @theeltea

    7 жыл бұрын

    Relish THEUnborn Apple stopped catering for professionals by stopping to do fully fledged towers like the MP5.1. In fact, most professionals still work on the old 5.1s instead of the trashcans. Because Apple did silly moves. They ruined FCP7 with FCPX. They don't care for the pro-market. It's obvious. Go and see what most serious movie editing and color bays now use. It's impossible to build a decent MacOS machine without going Hackintosh these days. So please... Re-evaluate.

    Relish THEUnborn I have experience with both and I've been in the media industry from the 90s. Windows was never a worse platform for music than Mac was. And I worked with audio macs since the classic mac days. It is a matter of preference. But Apple does not care for truly professional market these days. The lack of development and catering to the casual musician is what we see with Logic X these days. Look at the latest Cubase versions. They have all sorts of innovations. Logic? Not so much.

    Relish THEUnborn Last week my friend updated his MBP with some update. His class-compliant USB interface just stopped working. (Infrasonic Amon). Try to install a modern OS on a 2007 Macbook Pro or an old Mac Pro. You will fail, while you can easily install a modern Windows OS on it and it will be usable. What version of PT are we talking here? TDM? Native? What gen exactly? Please do realize that there are DAW systems besides Pro Tools which are in many ways superior, like Pyramix, for example. They have excellent Windows support and are rock solid. Please. There are TONS of issues (PT included) with Apple hardware and God knows how many times I had all sorts of quality issues with their laptops and software. I take it you haven't seen the 90s Amiga or Atari ST scene? No computers like what exactly? :) The Notator was on the Atari. Which became Cubase. Logic also came from there.

    Relish THEUnborn I am not criticizing the Mac. It was a very capable machine, especially the previous gen Mac Pro 5.1. But Apple pulled the plug on the pro market. Admit it. The trash can is pathetic. And the new Mac Pro is nowhere to be seen. I have been running Hackintoshes for more than 5 years now. I have a sleek and totally silent tower with great GPU running 3 displays, I have a thunderbolt Apollo interface, I have a fibre channel SAN network card and a PCI-E UAD card and I can add more stuff. All this for less than 3 grand. This is DIRT cheap. But it's not about the cost. It's about Apple not offering an elegant solution. I don't want to waste 10K$ on PCI-E expanders and tons of expensive Thunderbolt peripherals just to be able to run a music studio. The trashcan isn't an audio workstation. it's terrible. In every way possible. It's inferior to the 5.1 music wise. Forget Apple hardware. If you're a Logic guy like me, just go Hackintosh. It offers more options. Besides, I dual boot a Win10 on the same machine and it's great.

    Minimalism is a concept that doesn't exist in Richard Devine's mind. It's not because you're using 125 ingredients for a very complex sauce that it'll necessary make it a good one...
