In partnership with music gear marketplace Reverb we caught up with Steven Julien at his live-in studio in East London. He talked about the evolution of the space, grappling with perfectionism and why he'll always value quality over quantity when it comes to releasing music.
Julien has been a permanent fixture on London's electronic music scene for more than a decade. As FunkinEven, he emerged in the early 2010s with a steady stream of singles and EPs that veered from smooth, vocal-led house to pumping acid jams. In 2016, he retired the alias, reverting instead to his birth name. In the years since, he's continued to explore the outer reaches of house music-most notably on his acclaimed debut album, Fallen. He also runs Apron Records, a label synonymous with quality and originality. Its ever-growing roster-which now includes Brassfoot, Greg Beato and Lord Tusk-operates in its own sonic world, shielded from gimmicky pastiche and fleeting musical trends.
We caught up with Julien at his live-in studio in East London where he takes us on a tour showcasing the vast assortment of hardware within it.
