Students lead walkout after allegedly being told to limit Black History Month program

More than 200 students walked out of class Wednesday at Hillcrest High School in Tuscaloosa. The protest happened in response to students saying they were told by school leaders to omit certain events from a student-led Black History Month program scheduled for Feb. 22.

@@juanblanco7594 Hmm. QUESTION: "What is the difference between what happened in the past with protests seeking to remove history of Civil War monuments & what the school did?" ANSWER: The SCHOOL specifically was trying to remove the history of the American heroes who fought AGAINST slavery and FOR Civil Rights for all Americans. In other words, the SCHOOL wanted to censor history classes, to remove the history of the fight against slavery and the fight for civil rights for Black and other non-White Americans. The STUDENTS protested AGAINST THIS CENSORSHIP. On the off chance that you think that 'removing monuments to actual traitors to the United States who fought to preserve slavery' is the same thing as 'censoring history classes', you are VERY mistaken. 'Monuments' are not the same thing as 'History Classes'. 'History' is not 'altered' or 'censored' or 'erased' by removing monuments in public spaces. Monuments are 'statues to glorify the subject of the statue and the cause or ideals they represented'. You can tell by the 'different words' used to define 'statues', that 'statues' are 'not the same thing' as 'history'. As to your Holocaust-Denial---it speaks for itself. You can certainly ask nonsensical questions if you want. No one has 'censored you' or 'kicked you out' for doing so. Your 'questions' simply make you look like someone who is A) bad at vetting information, and who B) also wants to defend Nazis. The 'stream of factually incorrect premises' contained in your second 'question' is a demonstration of the rhetorical technique known as the 'gish-gallop'.

I went to high school in Toledo Ohio in the late 1970's with nearly no black classmates. Our American History class definitely covered the Civil War and slavery issues as well as the Civil Rights Movement and Martin Luther King and others. But this school in the modern era with 55% black students are being told to not discuss slavery or civil rights movement??? This sounds very bizarre and suspiciously bigoted. Unfortunately this will probably become more common as local Republicans try to delete accurate history from the curriculum. Look what DeSantis and his supporters have done in Florida.

The reason why is because Ohio was part of the North and on the right side of history. The people in positions of power in that administration are probably the children of the people who fought against Integration and who attacked and assaulted black people during Jim Crow and after the Civil Rights Movement that don't want their children to know their deeds and their impact on the present day African American community, smh. As an African American woman, I can definitely attest to the fact that the people in the Midwest are vastly different than the South, though some of the worst racism that I ever experienced was in the Midwest. In the Midwest, when people are not that way, they are adamantly anti-racist and their actions attest to it, but in the South, the people who SAY they're not that way won't flinch when they see someone insulting, attacking or discriminating against a poc, even if they themselves don't do it. It's like they don't really see it as wrong, and as a black person, it is disturbing to experience. I actually moved around in high school and my school with a larger white student body covered more African American history than the one where most of the students were black and Latino. In fact, my history teacher who was white in the predominantly poc school opted to completely skip over the Civil Rights Movement and didn't discuss it all saying she didn't have time. I'll never forget it as it was ironic and insulting to me since my parents were part of that generation.

I was willing to face termination by circumventing school district curriculum in order to tell the true story of black history articulated by black historians. I brought all my books into my classroom for the students to checkout as each was given an assignment to read and write a summary of the book they read due before March 1. The exam was constructed from my lectures. All students were offered note taking lessons as well and were permitted to use their notes during the exam. The surprise by most of the students were accompanied by their joy of finally learning Factual historical events authored by black historians and ancestors of the race.

I'm sure once kids fine out for themselves parent's scared kids will retaliate as opposed to black kids which we as BP don't need our history speaks for it self.stop the BIG LIE AND CLEAN IT UP..#IF CAN..
