This must be the first gay-positive TV episode I saw as a kid. Perhaps the first gay-positive message I ever heard anywhere as a kid. I never forgot about it.

Kind of but not really either, at least among teens who were better off or more independent. But still true enough at the school I went to anyway.

@@VCMarilyn there are two reasons why american networks film tv shows in canada. lower taxes and prettier actresses like kathryn winnick and kristen kreuk.

Dude it aired in 1998. This was before all the social media and cloud stuff took off. The Ellen episode that premiered the year before this. Ellen got huge backlash from advertisers and religious groups about that episode too. The ratings however were still successful despite that.

This wouldn't have been too rare or unusual on a prime time teen drama, but on a day time teen SITCOM aimed at younger audiences, it's very surprising to see in 1999. Of course now they're putting worse stuff in preschool cartoons (for whatever reason), but I don't remember encountering this topic in anything I would call a 'kids show' back then. Kind of surreal to see (I didn't really watch it back then but remember it vaguely by name).

Is the Emily girl supposed to be black(...ish), by any chance? (And I mean part-black of course.) It's hard to say for sure but she kind of looks it. Even the cartoonized version of her makes it seem so.

yes the actress Nicole Lynn is half black(Jamaican) and half asian. But I always thought she was half white because you can't see the Asian in her.
