I like this horse better than most horses that we have today.

What a pleasure to watch, relaxed and happy

Super interesting to me to see the difference of the canter pirouettes then and now. I wonder how that movement in particular ended up changing over time

The breeding changed the breeding. The horses got bigger gaits and it became more difficult

Strange how back then the horses were ridden on, or slightly in front of the vertical. I believe that is still a criteria under FEI rules.....however that doesn't seem to be the case nowadays, and riders aren't marked down for this "evasion" of the horse's posture......or is it the rider putting the horse into this incorrect posture because they cant control it any other way???..... Interestingly, you will notice the hands of the rider are held higher, and the Thumb nails are held turning so they face the sky, all at the level of the naval of the rider, which is VERY CORRECT. Certainly from my experience, with my horses, this is one of the best ways to assist in keeping the withers elevated never "acting backwards" by pulling both reins together. With the hands held in this manner, it IS more difficult to keep the Ramener correct, and on the vertical. It requires a lot of "Tact" with the hand, and that can only come if the hands are COMPLETELY independent from the rest of the riders body movements and will allow an effective channel of communication via the hand acting on the bit which when NOT acting on the mouth, should merely be carried in neutral by the horse in its mouth, ready for the hand to communicate the next request. An easy concept to understand, but not easy to achieve. Its a skill well worth the effort of achieving, as that way you will have a REALLY willing and Happy Horse performing correctly, and not over bending in its neck or opening its Poll excessively and hollowing its back.

+Keith Bartlam Oh yes absolutely that's correct Keith. I think there are a few things at play here, though. One is the difference between horses then and now and the difference between tests then and now. So much has changed. I see many articles expressing what you are seeing, many respected riders are questioning this too. As these flashy hot horses become the norm judges will begin to look elsewhere, will look at the whole picture. Horses constantly behind the vertical, stopped up front with hollow backs should not be the new normal despite a few at the very top winning like this at the moment. Modern horses do require a different kind of training to work from behind with a free front end and fully engaged back end, its not impossible, of course its not. This was also the norm many years ago. Many horses are now bred moving like PRE horses do but in a warmblood model, not truly extending and collecting or truly carrying themselves. If you ask me too rigid specialisation in breeding for pure dressage and pure jumping has has an enormous influence. A horse though still needs the power behind and this is what is lacking by not using jumping lines for at least a quarter of the pedigree. Soon horses wont have a back end at all, just a front end on a pole. Im sure it will never get to that but its coming very close........sad thing is these horses sell well at auctions so breeders are happy to breed them.

It is seen plenty these days. I have never worked with anyone in dressage who has anything positive to say about riding BTV or encourages it and they are all competing at higher levels. On the other hand many people think a horse is BTV when it is not, or think if it's a millimeter behind the vertical it will die. That's also overdoing it. But nor are the withers elevated by keeping a high hand position. That has nothing to do with elevating the withers.

The correct equestrian balance, lightness, and impulsion is to have the plane of the horses face slightly in front of the vertical. This is not ‘style’ it is correct biomechanics. Anything else is circus riding and ruins the horse, especially in the hocks and produces ‘kissing spine.’ The Bereiter who taught me did his apprenticeship at Christine Stuckelberger’s stable under her coach.

Magnificent. The way dressage should be ridden.

They are fantastic riders, with Granat we can see the work of Mr' George Val, Head Rider of Spanish Riding School, with out Mr' Val this horse maybe wouldn't reach the Grand-Prix and be a winer

Do you think t hat Georg Val just put the horse's stirrups up and slapped the horse and told it giddyup, go into the arena and do a Grand Prix test? No, that isn't how it works. They are ridden. Christine was a fabulous rider. I have seen her ride and teach. She was incredible. Like all top riders Christine got riding lessons. They all get lessons, they all have a coach or coaches. To downgrade and insult a rider because they have a coach is a really disgusting thing to do. Lots of riders worked with former SRS riders and trainers. It was another source of knowledge for a very long time.

These days they would be marked very high, this is quality dressage.

Forward is a condition of willingness not velocity.

This is the work of Christine, and not anyone else. And also without Mr Val, Christine would have been successful.

moorland totilas is a really great horse, but his new rider and trainers are training him in the wrong direction. Rollkur and hyper flexion, and a horse that is so tense through all of his body it's just disgusting to watch. What we want to accomplish through dressage is a fully collected, balanced and relaxed horse. Moorland Totilas will, under every performance, have white spit down his front(unnaturally much), eyes rolling, tongue out, ears back, and tail whipping. That is not a relaxed horse

Unfortunately you are totally wrong about the 'new' owner and rider of Totilas, perhaps you listened to that ridiculous video the Dressage Twins put out around that time. Almost NO ONE would take the ride on that horse then because so much of the training would have to be redone. Plenty were offered it. They all said no except Rath. The new rider agreed only because his mom-in-law adored the horse. He did exactly as he should have and as any traditional classic dressage rider would do - he retrained the horse, and took all the public criticism. The idea that Matt was some sort of 'beginner' is ridiculous, yet that is what was said. None of that criticism was based in reality. It was a very brave thing to do and 99% of people were clueless, as you are. People complained the horse was not as 'flashy.' Well, in fact, correct contact and half halts come before 'flashy.' If you don't want the horse to hit the bit and throw his front legs forward stiffly in extended trot(there were times when that horse scored a ONE for his extended trot with the former rider....) then the horse has to be reschooled. The former rider was incredible in many ways but there still was retraining needed. That's what Rath did, back to basics. After retirement his mom in law got the ride on the horse and just adored him all the more.

It's definitely for the layperson who knows little about dressage. Very helpful to those people I would say. Honest commentary as well, eg when a movement was suboptimal or excellent.

Let's see you do better with him. He was an incredibly powerful horse and a challenging ride as most of the top horses are.

@jjjjjokerface That's either because you don't know what you are looking at or you haven't seen Moorlands Totalis. Having said that. These are two SUPER Riders. These were super horse back then.

Totilas is depressing to watch, a tense horse contorted into circus tricks. Predictably made unsound, either by his freakish and unnatural gaits, the awful riding, or both.
