There was a gruesome, horrific accident in trading house in my town, Skarzysko-Kamienna, Poland: a 56-year-old postman, riding old freight elevator (exactly as one shown in this video), lost both of his legs. Inside lift's cabin there were some unsecured chipboards, which collapsed and pushed a postman against the gap between cabin's floor and the shaft. Moving cabin tore off one leg and completely crushed another one. When this massacre was happening, 54-year-old saleswoman was riding this lift with injured postman... No wonder I was deadly scared of those freight elevators in my childhood... An article about this accident in local newspaper: translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&u=echodnia.eu/swietokrzyskie/dramat-w-windzie/ar/8297022

A bad interlock contact, will break (open) the circuit preventing the cab from moving. In this case, banging on the doors closed the contact allowing current to flow. A license needed to operate this elevator? I've heard of licenses being required for operators of manually operated passengers elevators in some countries or states. Expect for the landing doors, this elevator is automatic as to floor buttons. The elevator could use better lighting.

I remember there is one place where the lift/elevator there has to be operated by an attendant, even though it is automatic, because it has a gate on the inside, and swing doors, because most people would not realise the gate had to be closed for it to work At least they are trying to preserve it as much as possible though (there are pictures hung on the wall of the shaft)

It looked like you were reaching for a lever each time you used the elevator. Were these elevators gated at one point?

funcik1 Ah OK it just looked like he was reaching for or pulling something on the area behind the doors each time he closed them. And the position he reaches for would be where you would expect a gate to be

It's not a gate. It is a manual operated door lock ;) And Yes, those elevators are creepy, some of them has a train (but not train) rails inside.
