Mike Sexton was one of poker legend Stu Ungar's closest friends and in the last few years of Ungar's life it was Sexton who provided a lot of support. Sexton was paying for Ungar's hotel room and had lent him many thousands of dollars but it turns out the most important thing Sexton ever did for him was give him a $300 JC Penney gift card to use for back-to-school clothes for his daughter.
No one was willing to give Stuey any more money because of his heavy drug problem but Sexton bought him a gift card and Stuey said that $300 was the most important money he had ever received. Bear in mind Stuey had won and lost an estimated $30 million by that time. Sexton told the story during the shooting of PokerListings.com's short documentary Stu Ungar's Last Chance Gone Wrong but it didn't make the final cut.

We all hit rock bottom. Doesn't matter if it's a 9-5 or self employed, or form of gambling. We all sometimes need help. The ones that give the help without judgment are blessed.

Sexton’s loyalty as a friend was there to the bitter end. Sexton himself admitted to being broke himself. Even when he was skint he still helped him. He knew there’s a possibility he would’ve used the money for something else so to guarantee his daughter had clothes for school he did the best thing he could’ve.

At a young age, Stu had to many people who were attached to him not as real friends but what money they could make off of him. Now add a substance that makes you feel great and eases that pain a little. By the time they realize their in trouble it’s to late.

In tournaments he was definitely up there and an argument can be made he was the best tournament player ever. In cash game he was a mark though because he was too reckless at time. This is according to Doyle Brunson and other High Stakes players. Their are many different forms of poker and aspects.

It amazes me how many very gifted people have difficulty abusing drugs. Guess they have nothing else to do once they reach the top.

Very common for very intelligent, gifted, and capable people to abuse drugs and alcohol. That could be one of the reasons, but some gifted people use drugs, and it prevents them from ever reaching the top or anywhere near their potential. That happens pretty often. So their is never one answer why they tend to abuse things, and sometimes lead reckless lives. Their are always going to multiple different reasons for different people, it's never one thing. In Stueys case I think what you mentioned could be one of the reasons for his abuse.

I think one of the reasons is that people like that have much more active minds than the average person, and sometimes it can be hard to live in your own head like that. Those kinds of things can cause severe anxiety, insomnia, and sometime depression as well. They have difficulty calming the mind, and drugs and alcohol calm the senses and they enjoy that feeling. Once they get hooked and long for that feeling most of them are going to have a hard time stopping if they want to stop. Stuey also liked cocaine and stimulants as well, so I think anything that changed his mind and kept him going he liked the feeling. Unfortunately he could never beat the addiction, and it ended his life at a very young age.

Actually we all DONT hit rock bottom. Some of us go through hard times but we sure as right wouldn't make it worse by using drugs and using friends for money...that is pathetic.

just because you don´t know what its like to have a drug problem doesnt mean anyone else cant Everyone sees the world in different perspectivs and some people understand the world more than others and therefore uses drugs to numb the feelings. Stu Ungar was a genius in many aspects of life and understands things you never could, i doubt he just used drugs for the fun of it. there is a reason some of the smartest peoples on earth is alcoholics and drug addicts.

I will guess that you still had the same number of quality players in a tournament regardless of 200-300 or 2000-3000. The problem is, you have to avoid so many more of the average players hitting lucky to get to those quality players.
