Once again there is confusion about the 1990 main event. The claim that he never showed up for the final table is contrary to my own recollection of that event. I remember him busting out in 9th and leaving the table. I was there when Matloubi defeated Hans "Tuna" Lund. I was also there in 1997 when Stu won the event for the third time. I recall that he passed by me while on a break and I could clearly see his collapsed nostril from the cocaine. Stu confirms the old adage that more people have been ruined by success than failure.

Crazy how once in a generation people like this always seem messed up, it's like their brain is wired so sharp it's hard to focus in daily life, they constantly strive for more and can't take daily life, like an obsession eating them alive , the higher the bar set the worse everything else gets around them. I suppose it's a drive that comes at a cost to balance out for the rest of us or it just wouldn't be fair 😂

Poker was a lot different back then. Didn't have the computer analysis that we have today. The fields were tiny compared to today. Top players today are far more aggressive than they were back then. Many more players today play the style like he did. But in the end he ended up broke. So many players today made millions and have ended up broke. And unfortunately he died of a drug overdose.

To add on to the story about giving a stranger on the street a $100, his friend asked if he knew the stranger. Stu said no, if he did he would have given him a $1000! Card and numbers genius. The yeyo got to him but it got to Layne flack, Mike matusow, , Gavin Smith, seebok, etc alot of players do heavy drug use .

@Travis L In terms of pure play-reads, understanding the odds, playing the game, I think he's the best to ever do it. I'd have loved to see him go against like Fedor or Bryn or Bonomo. Can you picture Stu doing a heads up 25k hands challenge omg would be incredible. For me though at the end of the day, poker is a game about making money. It's difficult for me to rank the GOAT some guy who finished his career without any money and constantly borrowing money-when Stu finished he was bankrupt and had no money to his name and his funeral had to be fundraised through charity. You can argue those were due to lifestyle choices or something but Stu had no discipline at all with his money and managing your bankroll is a critical part to long term poker success. Phil Ivey currently has an estimated net worth over $100m and might finish his career having made well over $200-$300m. The dude still has 40+ years of playing easily if he wants.
