Stu Hamm visited Sweetwater for a special bass workshop with the help of Washburn. Stu Hamm's unmatched bass-playing skills were exposed to a national audience while recording and performing with such hailed guitarists as Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Frank Gambale. Later recordings and collaborations with Satriani and other rock/fusion artists, as well as his solo career, solidified his stellar reputation among bassists and guitarists alike, earning him a place in bass history.

I saw Steve's band with Stu in 1983/84 at a club/bar when they first started out. I already knew about Steve from Zappa, but Stu just killed it... he is so talented. Very proud to see them back then.
Very inspiring. I actually met Stu last year at a music shop before I really got into him. Very nice and I even got to take a photo with him. And he played just like this for about an hour and I sat second row. Awesome!
an inspiration to keep always practicing and never think you know everything. absolutely brilliant
Been a fan of Stu for years. ...Bloody Genius...no doubt at all.
I've met him and he is such a nice dude!
Yes, this man is a musical genius with a four-string axe in his hands. Thank you for making the world a better place sir.
I love the fact the guy is so normal he messes up and he does not apologize for it he is remarkable in play and a hello a "normal" guy its great to see someone of his standing is so cool.
You've been a staple for 30 years Stu! Love ya man and all your talents!
this guy could easily have 1M subs on youtube if he wanted to. all of these epic bass covers would go get so many views.

Wow, I'm completely stunned! I didn't know Stu was such technically an accomplished player! I only knew him as Joe Satch's bassist, and most of the Things he does in those records sound "accessible".

Of course man, to play with Joe and Steve you must know your way around the bass, that's for sure, but still you don't expect Rock band bassists to be exactly Victor Wooten, do you? Take two of them at random: say Iron Maiden's Steve Harris that Stu mentions here, or RHCP's Flea. These are two world class Rock acts, and those two bassists can do fast picking and slapping and it is great, but Stu is beyond that, for he is into two-hand tapping and melody chord playing, and it is awesome! Anyway, it is not entirely my fault that I didn't notice before. Stu himself kind of acknowledges that he didn't really shine as a bassist in those Joe Satch and early Steve Vai records, and he explains the reasons at around 1:07:00.

Edouard Gahini Stu may not personally 'compose' memorable music that many people like but as a bass player he can hold down 'ANY BAND' playing any music. He is one of the most accomplished musicians to play the instrument.

Edouard Gahini You're a good dude, but Steve Harris or Flea are far more technically competent than you are giving them credit for. Flea is not just slap; he is extremely melodic. You need to be exposed to a bit more of his playing. Just as Stu can do stuff they can't do, they can do stuff Stu can't. I guarantee you Stu would admit this much. They are all virtuoso musicians with utterly different sounds.

+Joni Misso Stu could lose both arms and still be more of a musician (and man) than you.
Such beautiful tone! Wonderful and interesting. I love you, Stu. Thank you for your channel, Sweetwater!!
Great! Stu just loves melody, and it really shows when he does his bass versions of classic tunes. Top stuff, old bean.
Fantastic Stu!
I love me some Hamm stu! :) I love this guys playing. Check out this other guy play Hendrix on bass
I don’t fully understand the why of this but when I listen to Stu play solo it always puts me in the mind-set of Christmas. Maybe I first heard him at Christmas time or something when I was a kid? Who knows?
He like s every minute of it nice to see great stu

I just love his changes in dynamics and feel, he's so musical
Dear Stu...when are you coming to Australia? Please let there be a God.
I was sorry to hear Stu advocating "alternative medicine." Remember Peter Sellers, folks.
genius
Whats the tune at 1:16:30?
f'n great
Stu is the guy I'd call, needing a bassist with some musical skill, short notice, no worries. You busy mate?
I used to be a Washburn dealer, when I owned 3 music stores. I would have rather heard him playing a Warrior Instruments neck-thru design bass. Would have been night and day difference.
Ditto James Burdo III

From 53:00 onwards that kinda sounds like "Count Zero"
If Stephen Root and John Goodman mixed their DNA and had a kid...
amazing how no one plays traditional bass anymore. its played like either a drum, keyboard, rhthym, lead or steel guitar or anything else the imagination wishes

The most over-hyped, mediocre bass player ever shoved on the music scene. Better players in any city's local band scene. Just look.
