A IR impulse response is a snapshot that is static and does not emulate the speaker changing its sonic thumbprint as it is driven harder with out getting into heat and the ohm fluctuations … ox stomp is radically authentic…

The lion still sounds much better

Really appreciate all these videos. I'm also super curious whether the dynamic speaker modelling in the Ox Stomp beats standard IRs, separately from whether the amp models in the Dream, Lion etc are any good. But it's hard to find examples of people swapping between Ox and IR on the same amp model, or between amp models using the same cab sim! I'm running a loadbox with a Torpedo CAB M right now, and the Ox Stomp looks like it might be a meaningful upgrade from that, even with the irritation of no XLR.

I haven’t directly compared IRs to the ox stomp but the fact that I can change mics , levels and speakers on the fly without a computer is a a great creative workflow. I’ll try to put a video together doing some that. Sounds like it could be interesting!

@@RPMusicStudiosI would absolutely love something along those lines. Same guitar loop, same amp model, and get the Ox as close as possible to a good IR. I’m moderately confident it’ll still sound better. I hadn’t actually thought about the knobs but that’s actually huge. I have hundreds of IRs on my Torpedo CAB to control mic placement and it’s a real pain

It's crazy to see how an "old" piece of gear (as we can claim that the Iridium is now) is still on pair with the much newer technology that UA is offering today. I have to say both have their own sweet spot (perhaps the Lion sounds more organic when dirty than the iridium whereas the latter has a much more convincing clean tone, with nice mids, just like a real Marshall). That said, it would be really interesting to see a software update for the Iridium at some point (I doubt it though, I think Strymon might be developing something completely new)

It’s funny what constitutes as “old” these days! I agree with you that strymon is probably working on a new amp sim pedal. Both pedals have value imo. The strymon is flatter but fuller and has more features. The Lion has a more dynamic response and and upper mid liveliness that I can’t get out of the strymon. I think they complement each other in a mix!

They are much much closer with the same cab, like I suspected. I feel that the differences can be matched compensanting on the EQ knobs of the units. More treble to the Iridium, for example, would enhance it's transients and brightness. I'm a fan of the Dream 65. But this Lion, I don't know man. Iridium might be a better pick considering it has more features.

I like the Lion better as a stand-alone box. I don’t think it sounds as good with the ox stomp. In this comparison I think the strymon comes ahead. The strymon having more features is great and pairing it with the ox stomp gives it a new life that no 3rd party IR will compete with imo. Having said all that I’m keeping all 3 boxes for now.

I do think the Iridium shines with something like the OX. I use my Iridium live and it sounds good. But when I put an Xotic EP Booster in front and it came to life.
