Structural Mover, 12 ton Walking Beam Dolly Construction

DOCUMENTATION VIDEO - This is a repeat of much of the content in "Boat Transport - 15 miles to the Tulsa Port of Catoosa". We, or someone else may build one of these dollies so this video covers more details of construction for a 12 ton house mover dolly. I'd like to thank Garrison House Movers of Owasso Oklahoma for letting us have a close look at their moving equipment.

i appreciate seeing people who have confidence and ability take on these such things, and when i see comments from those who decry ambition as if they cannot gauge the effective will of a man and his talents, i grin and feel empowered even more. I built a crane to put shingle bundles onto a second story roof with just the scrap lumber around the house, and they naysayers just stood around and watched, jaw dropped. keep up the good life

Nevermind the naysayers. If you are resourceful enough to figure out how to build a 74ft steel sailboat with zero previous knowledge/experience, then a trailer ought to be a walk on the dock. Keep up the good work.

Making a trailer is obviously something that can be done, my only question is why you would want to go the cost and effort for building something to use once and never see again. Seems to me it would be simpler to just construct a frame that you can use the house mover's dollies with with less effort and cost, isn't a house mover going to pull it to water anyway? Unless I'm missing something.

as a former truck driver one thing to keep in mind is if there are railroad crossing in your route. with low trailers you need to watch out for " high centering"

Your determination is an inspiration to me for sure. Nothing ventured nothing gained. I've only watched a dozen or so vids you have up. And really your abilities and your willingness to have others put their input into your project is something else. I myself have been blind by my own self determination thinking I'm usually right and do things on my own. Watching your videos is not encouraging and inspiring to have more input and help from others and that if you simply want to do it. Do it. Building a ship in your backyard is incredible. I cannot wait to see he maiden voyage and your project finally a reality. Keep the vids coming. Best wishes from us here in Regina sask

I remember when I first saw this channel and I admit I was a bit skeptical. But then I went and looked at some of Doug's old videos and saw he built a submarine!!! As far as I'm concerned, SV Seeker is a walk in the park. Doug is definitely a man's man. Smart as all get out. He's the guy you want in the fox hole when the you know what hits the fan!

This reminds me of freight train rail cars. Where the whole car sits on the wheels. The wheels an axles are one piece. A bearing type module is sandwiched in between them.

I did come across 30 of those tires. came from a trailer park storage shed. I had a 8 fixed to hold air and have them as spares for my over loaded wood trailer. they look ugly, but they hold up. still have my original 8. the others are in an old grain bin. some I've given away.

Many mobile homes still have the tires and axles under the house, some have hitches. In this part of New York there are a number of trailer parks and tires and axles could be found for free. A mobile home company might have a complete trailer from a house that was demolished. In my opinion from experience I would think you would need 4 of the main I-beams found on a typical 14ft wide mobile home. I think you could get two hitches and simply stack one atop the other and weld them together. The 4 I-beams would be 2 per side of the boat. The tires could be between the paired I-beams on either side allowing you to weld the spring shackles to the center of the i-beams lowering the overall height. Using a 3 point hitch is a bad idea when, or if, you have to lower or raise the hitch to adjust the height of the front or back of the load. Traditionally the loader or toter has a hitch with a 4-way hydraulic hitch receiver. Really nice toters are 4 wheel drive. Dragging the ass the trailer transitioning from road surfaces occurs a lot and the city can fine you if you put too deep of gouges in the blacktop. Having a roller at the back on the bottom of the main beam assemblies like those found on dumpsters can make for a smoother transition if you bottom out. Using air bag jacks instead of hydraulic jacks can make everyone's life easier and safer if the the trailer and boat need to be jacked.

Please consider engineering assessment of the final design of the trailer... I would hate to see all the hard work everyone has done, get damaged due to an oversight. Also, this may reduce your liability should things go South. Take a look at Goldhoffer trailers. Thanks for all the great videos...

when you make the axles, you might consider putting a close fitting tube or pipe inside the axle assembly, add some extra strength and weld all the pieces together as an assembly...that gives you an unwelded piece through all the welded joints

I made the comment to Doug's question about weight abilities of this axle group, I said something that was totally incorrect. That group of 8 wheel assemblies, one on each side, would be rated for more than the Seeker weighs with very little issue. Learn even at my age..lol..Thanks Doug for letting me correct myself !

  • @mabmachine
    @mabmachine7 жыл бұрын

Doug, What if you design and build the assembly without the axles and borrow the movers axles? Worth asking them, they would only have to cut the bar stock to free them. Seems the only issue would be timing and schedule.

So are you going to end up with a couple of beams out the front for the truck to bring the 5th wheel and hook on, or are you going to have the 5th wheel ready for them to just back up to, if the latter, you should measure height from ground if you haven't already.

Doug- I'm a long time watcher from Wisconsin. I come through Tulsa weekly driving truck. I head back home 44 to Joplin.I believe there is one possibly two over pass bridges that are 15' 3". height clearance before exit 148 Port of Catoosa. Hope this is not bad news or you have another route. Have you been down to Muscogee to see the U.S.S. Baitfish submarine?

I think the axles are floating to allow some conformity over uneaven roads. The axle can follow the road a little. I don't like it, the axles can't be braked and there is no controller over there movent. Best to use truck trailer axle assemblies.

i remember you said quote was 15000 i am from canada and own my own truck and do oversize myself i do not no your rules or regulations down there but 15000 does seem high have you checked how much the permit costs /do you need escort vehicles / do you need police escort /and with the height on route do you have to remove hydro or phone wires / not sure if you will need brakes on axles i know it is stupid but some types of transport have special rules reguarding what they need hope you figure out it is a beautiful vessel and would be nice to see in the water
