Strong WILL and DISCIPLINE Will Make You SUCCESSFUL! | J.K. Rowling | Top 10 Rules

She's a British novelist best known as the author of the Harry Potter fantasy series.
The books have gained worldwide attention, won multiple awards, and sold more than 400 million copies.
In 2004, Forbes named her as the first person to become a billionaire by writing books.
She's J.K. Rowling and here are her Top 10 Rules for Success.
* Join my BELIEVE newsletter: www.evancarmichael.com/newslet...
1. Failure helps you discovers yourself
She went from living on state benefits to multi-millionaire status within 5 years.
2. Take action on your ideas
The Harry Potter books have become the best-selling book series in history.
3. You will be criticized
Anticipating that the target audience of young boys might not want to read a book written by a woman, her publishers asked that she use two initials, rather than her full name.
4. Remember where you started
She was diagnosed with clinical depression which she claims gave her inspiration to create the Dementors in the Potter series.
5. #Believe
Twelve publishing houses rejected her original Harry Potter manuscripts, but eventually small publisher Bloomsbury gave her a chance with a small advance.
6. There is always trepidation
She conceived the idea for Harry Potter in 1990. The 7 years that followed saw the death of her mother, divorce from her first husband and relative poverty until Rowling finished the first novel.
7. Life is not a checklist of achievements
She named communist and civil rights activist Jessica Mitford as her "most influential writer".
8. Persevere
She's the United Kingdom's best-selling living author, with sales in excess of £238m.
9. Dreams can happen
In 2010, she was named the "Most Influential Woman in Britain" by leading magazine editors.
10. We have the power to imagine better
Harry Potter is now a global brand worth an estimated US$15 billion.

Interesting that JK just tweeted about this video a few hours ago and said: "God, I hate this stuff. I've winged it my whole life. I've messed up regularly. There are no rules. Do your thing." Which I suppose sums up all the rules, in a way- be bold, be willing to put in the hard work, do your thing (Oprah's 'find your purpose'), don't be afraid of making mistakes, take some risks, and don't follow the rules (wing it/ have fun). I'd like to think both sides of the coin are right. There are no "rules" in that sense, but there are principles to live by, and if they inspire us to become our best selves, then that's a good thing.

  • @EvanCarmichael

Thank you for sharing DrEm. Yes, really interesting. :) "Do your thing" could be a rule on itself. The videos are created to inspire and motivate people to #Believe and take action by following their passion and achieving their goals and dreams. It is up to anyone to follow or not and most probably there are rules that will resonate with us. As per your word "if they inspire you to become your best self, then that's a good thing" indeed. :) Perhaps you can also make your own rules that will inspire others - #Believe. Thank you for watching! #BTA167 Shine

this list of rules is someone doing their own thing . . . so the key is to see that there are no rules against rules. Some will achieve with no rules, and others will use many rules. The point is not how you get there but that you realize along the way that your path is your own

Rock bottom became the solid foundation onto which I rebuilt my life."

Great work on this Evan. I like Rowling's perspective on being criticized. Not only did she mention that we should expect to be criticized, but she admitted that at times it's "right and proper" that we should be criticized. We should indeed accept, expect, and even desire criticism so that we can learn from it and grow.

Anthony Miyazaki My understanding was that, although we don't fare well under criticism, this is a must in things pertaining to art because it is subjective. HP had been rejected more than 10 times before she found a publishing house for the book. This, I think, speaks volumes about her trust in her own craftsmanship.

+Dylan Balkind Everything in life is mental. While we are under the illusion that the human brain has limitations, in reality, we are capable of anything that we believe to be capable of. While our perception of those capabilities is bogged down by external forces such as the media and government, that doesn't mean you cannot achieve whatever you want in life. The biggest step is realizing that limitations are nothing more than a social construction. You would be surprised what you can achieve in life by believing.

+Lollipopfop funny that you come up with this. Every person that is succesfull in whatever has held to an ammount of simple things to know that can turn your life around if you know it. We humans are the only species that can imagine things and create them for ourselves. Everything. If you read the right books, read studies, ouresearch yourself in past experiences in life than you would know it. also it never comes in a day. And humans can already fly, cause physical we have no wings, but we created an airplane out of an IDEA in someones head. Everybody thought he was insane but he made it happen. So yes, it is actually more realistic to believe in yourself then convincing yourself you can`t do shit.

So many people have great ideas that they are truly passionate about but they never take single step towards making it happen. Believing in yourself sounds so easy but it's mostly not. If you can't, find someone to believe in you until you can!

*Persevere -* This is so important in order to make sure you can fully show up in the situation you're in. Without this, no progress can ever be made through the challenging times, rejections and setbacks. It's one of the main contributing actions that if not taken, will not have you at the top of your profession's hierarchy. I'm having a pretty tough day today, so I need to really keep this in mind. #BTA41

This "10 rules" video confirms a lot of what I've experienced so far. I've got the failure part of it down-pat, lol, but I've found that perseverance is one of the most important rules of thumb. Another one, which wasn't mentioned here, is "follow your intuition." I've had a few ideas that didn't quite sit right with me. Or else they were downright bad. So I rejected them, only to discover that there were much better ideas waiting for me down the road. And that has taken some patience; it's better to wait for a great idea, sometimes after several days of brainstorming, than to jump on a mediocre one. When I had my idea for a novel a few months ago, I immediately googled J.K. Rowling, took a cue from her experience, and began to plan (and write) every day. Thanks for the video!

I was wainting for it ! I'm not a huge Harry Potter fan (even if I like it a lot), but J.K Rowling is the perfect example of "do what's inside you and persevere, whatever publishers tell you" because she tried so much times before somebody published her work ! As an artist, each of her rules resonates with me in a deep way. :) I would love to see top 10 rules from other artists. You made some singers, but I could be cool to have film makers or other authors too ! I propose Tim Burton's top 10 rules and Neil Gaiman top 10 rules ! :) Thank you for sharing this ! #BTA2

Favorite quote, "We carry all the power we need inside ourselves already." (I take this to mean that there's a part of ourselves that refuses to let our talent flow and it "counsels" us that we need something else to succeed, when all we need is to pull our own finger from the dike we've built to hold back our creativity.)

I loved when J.K. Rowling talked about not giving up and not letting anyone talk you out of your dream. I am so passionate about writing fiction, short stories mainly. I cannot imagine not ever being able to write. Being regularly published would be so wonderful, but it's writing, it's getting to the final, seemingly polished draft that's great for me and then sending it off tells me that I am continuing to try to make my dream come true. Great video. We definitely need more about other fiction writers.

Rule #8 to persevere is my fav. I began writing in 2009. No agents or publishers would ever look at my work. Thank goodness we have the Kindle. I now have over 50 titles there, the most recent ones under a secret pen name. I have done my share of messing up as she said, written my share of rubbish, gotten my share of harsh criticism, but along the way my passion to write has only increased. Although I'm still an unknown (especially so using a secret name...LOL), I'm now getting sales daily, interestingly mostly from the UK (I'm in Florida). A quote from a Clint Eastwood movie says it best. "Endeavor to persevere." :)

I must say, at 7 I discovered that i had a talent of writing so i started in bits i wrote lots of small novel which were never published not because i was also rejected but as months ran into years i would re- read them and later loose interest in them because they're the seem too meaningless and the way i used my grammars were not organized and I knew nothing about literature. And now,I'm 13, I guess my lost hopes are beginning to fade after watching a you tube video that inspired me the most last month. Well, that video was THE BIOGRAPHY OF JK ROWLING. It built a spirit of perseverance and a reason to say DO NOT EVER EVER GIVE UP!!!!! So, I'm about to write a novel that I believe would add my name to the world's youngest writer. I'll be forever grateful to God for the inspiring biography of JK Rowling..................................................

Perseverance, self-belief, and learning to deal with failure, following your passion - taking risks - are criteria for (eventual) success - which does not happen overnight, as all entrepreneurs can attest! Of course there is no simple "Blueprint" that guarantees success, but successful people all follow a path of self-discovery and continuous process of learning from life itself. Each and every successful person (see each version of their 10 Rules) develops their own identity and sense of spirit to tackle adversity, setbacks and failure, and sheer hard work, grit and determination to push though. As renowned serial entrepreneur JT Fox says: "Never quit because the finishing line may be closer than you think". "Winners just don't quit!"

Nothing could be further from the truth or farther from reality. Your personal story is as powerful and inspirational to people as any story of a person that I have ever heard. Your story says: It is not the ending that makes the story, it is the journey. Thank you for sharing your journey, and for telling your story through the various interviews and appearances aggregated in this video. I am very thankful for having come across it. I hope you reconsider your approval of it.

Much needed video for me right now❤ I'm 21, just finished college. I've always loved to read. Only a few months ago, I found out that I loved writing too..Since then, I couldn't get this passion for writing out of my mind.. Rule 8 gives me a lot of hope. Now I know I shouldn't worry about writing rubbish... I also have this thought that I started late..not too late I guess..

when I was in high school I wrote a script and a book without being told so (even though my script was kinda rubbish), but if it is something you love you should do it. I just had to write, it is my natural instinct to do so and i have always felt good doing it. So no, it is not weird to do something you enjoy.

Oh yes, you are a weird one alright. Better tuck that one in and nurse it along. What ever you do, don't let it get away. I'm nearing my late fourties and I've managed to trick, cajole, and plead my little weirdo not to leave me. I'm not sure what I'd do without it.

I love #3 YOU WILL BE CRITICIZED. It is part of every person's journey. The only people that are never criticized are those that do nothing with their lives. #4 REMEMBER WHERE YOU STARTED: My brother, in 1982 we were living in a tiny one bedroom apartment in Williamsburg Brooklyn. By we I mean, my mother, father, and my 2 brothers. We only had one meal a day for a few months. We had almost nothing but it was there that my brothers and I made a pact to make it out of there and to give back to my parents for sacrificing so much for us. This was a great video.

Agree...at some point in our lives we will be criticized and it's important to remember where we started, let that propel us to greater heights and inspire us to move forward. :) Glad you liked the video George. #Believe #BTA568 Shine

Mike Parker life is a test. It's your human right to find out what I mean. who created you? What are you here for? No power is greater than who created all humankind. in times of desperation all call out His name. I'm not here to debate that's Iblis's game but just wanted to give you the message. What you do with it is up to you.

If life is a test......If life isn't a test.....I'm merely a 12 year old boy....I know nothing about life....I admit...But I do know one thing about life. It's like a piece of mudded clay.....It's subjective. ....It depends... It's up to you to think about life....The Bible, Qur'an, Mikrah and , is honestly a book....Am I wrong?....Who wrote it?, a man....Is that wrong?....Novels are a bunch of papers that have a plot, setting, and aspects...Is that wrong.?.....If you say it's wrong...well, I have no right to change your opinion....nobody does...it's up to you...but If you agree with me..you will find the beauty escaping reality by words ...it takes you to different places....It inspires..It creates. ..It destroys. ...Books are all of those...now....Do you want to escape reality?...That's honestly your choice. ....I would honestly want to...The world is a sick place. It can be both beautiful and horrendous. .....And like the world..your answer can be both.....

Rule #1, Rip Off The Worst Witch. Harry Potter is a ripoff of The Worst Witch. Jill Murphy in 1974 wrote about a school for witches and wizards where they learned potions, flying on brooms, etc, and even had a movie and show about it way before Harry Potter was even written.

My personal comment on that one (Rowling's Top 10 Rules for Success)... After watching the Top 10 Rules for Success... I really enjoyed it much. Never come up on my mind her tweet that 'why should we follow rules? There are no rules [to be successful]. Do your thing.' I watch (Evan's videos) all the time and never come up on a point that these are THE RULES THAT I SHOULD FOLLOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL. All I know is this feeling 'we're the same situation before, he did it, and so I can do it too' [something like that feeling]. I'm not saying her tweet is something mean. What I'm saying is the video is tribute to her for people who feels the same situation like her right now and know how not to give up and keep moving forward. That's it. #BELIEVE
