Strong Thunderstorm Line Hits Pequannock, NJ June 14, 2024

New Jersey was hit by a strong line of thunderstorms early yesterday evening from a combination of high instability and moisture across the area, strong low-level wind shear, and a cold frontal passage. In my area, the line of storms had a gust front that produced some wind gusts upwards of 40-50 MPH and some heavy downpours. Other areas across the region in eastern PA and much of NJ had some wind damage, power outages and even a confirmed EF0 tornado in Mercer County, NJ. Unfortunately, I missed the meat of this storm because it moved through when I had to attend a get-together. However, I still got some footage of the gust front moving in which blasted bystanders who were attending the carnival in town and kicked up some dust in the baseball fields, and some ominous-looking fast moving clouds. Then, as the storm line and the last of the remaining rain bands moved out, there was a very bright double rainbow which lit up the sky just as the sun set. The cold front has given way to a warm but beautiful weekend, probably the last few nice days we'll have before a multi-day heatwave settles over the Northeast U.S. for much of next week.
