I process electric wires in diameter from over 30mm and all the way down to o.2mm wires, without any tools. I don't even waste precious time cutting off the plugs/connectors. The solution is: Pyrolysis. Years ago I bought a professional stripping machine; waste of time! In each pyrolysis run 50 kg of wires are processed in each batch. Processing time: 1 hour; total working time: maximum 10 minutes! After completion of the pyrolysis process all connector pins are easy to pull off, as they are completely free of any plastic. Don't waste you time by trying to pull small gold plated pins out of plastic connectors; they are pressed into the plastic, or the plug is moulded around them. Gold plated pins are separated out for later gold recovery, the rest is thrown directly into the brass bucket. Pyrolyzed wires are easy to sort out into individual fractions: Bare bright copper, for electro refining to 99.999% purity / low value aluminium wires, for melting into bars / tinned wires, for valuable tin recovery / nickel wires, for nickel recovery. 99.9% of all scrappers consider the plastic insulation as annoying garbage. How foolish! By pyrolysis you'll recover every single bit of value. The yield is not only the metals, but also Raw Pyrolysis Oil, which in a later process is cracked into free petrol/gasoline for the car, free diesel for the truck, and free viscous oil for the metal melting furnace as well as free heating of the workshop. A word of caution: All internal wires from electronics contains Fire Retardants (FR)! Usually brominated, which means hazardous Bromine will be released during pyrolysis. Such wires are always processed separately. The Bromine is recovered and sold as either elementary Bromine or NaBr. Warning: If anyone want to engage into pyrolysis he/she must be aware that 99% of electric wire insulation is made from Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) plastic. PVC plastic contains 57% Chlorine. Upon heating, during the pyrolysis process, a huge quantity of deadly Chlorine gas is released. It's important that this gas under no circumstances is released. The pyrolysis unit must be constructed as a fully closed system capable of capturing all Chlorine. The Chlorine gas is converted into free HCl (hydrochloric acid), a very useful chemical for hydrometallurgical processing of e-waste, Precious Metals recovery, and many other processes. Also be aware that after pyrolysis of electric wires, the carbon residue in the pyrolysis vessel will be contaminated with poisonous Antimony. This dangerous element must be extracted before the carbon can be used. As the boiling point of Antimony is 1635 C no vapor is created, all Antimony will remain in the carbon residue. It's worth mentioning that this video only show stripping of single strand electric wire. Try this method on multistrand wire and you'll cut into the individual thin copper threads, resulting in an inevitable loss of a great part of your copper. Further the insulation is extremely thin on o.2mm or o.4mm wires, making it impossible to strip such thin wires by this method. I recover 100% of the copper by pyrolysis. A final remark: Potato peelers and also graters have a very fine thin sharp edge. Plastic is well known for wearing down cutting equipment very fast, due to the added fillers. Among the worst is plastic made for wire insulation, containing not only plasticizers for softening, but also a large amount of fillers for UV protection and enhanced weather protection; some of these are very abrasive. Kitchen utensils used for this purpose will become dull in no time.

I strip all of my wire by hand. I use my multi tool, needle nose pliers would serve the same purpose. I put a 1x6 plank of wood on my coffee table and I use the box cutter i keep for work to cut the insulation as I pull the wire with my multi tool. It works better than any other method I've tried. Replacement blades are cheap. You get a feel for it.

Stripping cable is a time taken v price paid for stripped cable / bright wire. The majority of cable is not worth stripping as your hourly wage is very small. Stripping cable by hand is hard on your fingers and wrists, if doing a lot of it buy a machine

The question you need to ask is it worth the time ... if u strip 1 pound every 15 minutes (which wouldn't be easy ) BARE bright is around $3.50 a pound I think?? You are making $14 per hour , where if you scrap it with the insulation on you get around $1.20 per pound , it takes no extra work and you are gaining the weight of the insulation itself. The stranded wire is definitely not worth stripping , cash it in as is..
