Striped Bass 46' - 33lb out of the Cape Cod Canal

Спорт

This takes place during our vacation in Cape Cod in June 2019. I had the chance to hook up on a 46' striped bass on my first time fishing the canal. Apologies for all the coughing and sniffing, I was recovering from a bad cold. Please note I had no intentions to kill any fish, however in this case I had no choice. Hope that this will serve as an example of what NOT to do if you are planning to release your catch.
Gear used:
Rod: Okuma Nomad Travel 4 piece Surf rod -1004H - 2-6oz
Reel: Daiwa Ballistic LT 6000-D
Line : Power Pro Super 8 Slick v2 - 40lb - Moonshine with an FG knot to a Seaguar Fluorocarbon STS - 40lb
Clip: Tactical Angler - 75lb
Lures: Sebile Magic Swimmer - 190FL, Daiwa SP Minnow 17S

I remove treble hooks and put on large single hooks and crush the barbs. I miss hooking some fish but with single barbless hooks it's easy to unhook and release the fish. The fish you caught had damage from the front treble hook. Treble hooks are dangerous for the fisherman also.

Next time crush the barbs, but even more important, get the fish back into the water as quickly as possible. Its bad enough the fish is in shock, then you take it out of the water the weigh it . Try to de-hook it while still in the water, then resuscitate it then release it

I stopped using treble hooks years ago because of the damage it does on a fish!!!...I mainly use bucktails and jigs single hook!! I know how it feels to catch a fish like this and having it die on me because of treble hooks..We all owe it to ourselves and to future generations to do our part in protecting all fish...Thank you for posting this video Dan because it's a video like this that can help change the way we fish!!..

Nice video! What are your thoughts on the Ballistic 6k size for that rod. I have the MH version of the Nomad and have a Saragosa 8k on it. I just purchased the M 9' version as well and I am trying to decide which reel to pair it with. Do you think the Ballistic 6k would be too big?

Actually for the 9' it'd perfect. On my 10'H, feels too light and the balance is a bit off. I also use it on my 9'M salmon-steelhead rod and it feel much better balanced.

Depends what you are planning to throw, the rod is way overrated, it can handle 1,5 - 4 oz plugs, everything above is a struggle. And it is not the best for jigging. The build quality, components and the case are excellent, though. Not too many choices for travel surf rods available, though.

  • @amifishing

Yes, the rod I am using is a 4 piece Okuma surf travel rod. Once put together feels like a single piece. It is rated 2-6oz, but in reality is more like 1.5 to 4oz. Far from ideal for the canal, jigging anything above 4oz is a real pain. Overall I am happy with it for the price and the quality.

Stripers will eat a plug/their bait from the head 99% of the time. Just remove the back treble hook and that fish might've survived. If you don't like the lure action with just the front treble or front single hook, you could add a tail flag. Also, in the future, bringing fish in quickly helps with the reviving and releasing. Clamp down that drag more and trust your knots if you're aiming for big fish and actually want to revive them rather than end up with them half dead at your feet. Congrats on the big fish.

I just came back from Florida where I did quite a lot of beach fishing with the ballistic lt and I am really impressed how easily handled some good size jacks while taking a lot of salt water splashing without a problem. congrats on catching a nice fish, but this is extremely painful to watch. Killing a big beautiful breeder striped bass such as this should just not be done period. If you're going to fish the canal, and at the same time claim that you have no intention of killing any fish then you should be prepared to handle these fish properly and quickly. This means having the correct equipment to remove hooks (especially when you're using multiple trebles), keep the fish in the water and released quickly. There is no doubt in my mind that anyone with experience handling fish properly would have safely released this fish with no problem. To post something like this as a way to brag about your catch is not cool at all. This should be an example of what not to do if you actually care about these fish or the sport of fishing in general.

Sean, you bring valid points and I agree with the most part, beside saving the fish. The guy that helped me land the fish is a canal regular and we both couldn't do anything, the hook was stuck in the gills and twisted around, so bad that I had to cut the hook eye in order to pull my plug out. You must agree that there is a learning curve, specially for someone like me who had never practiced surf fishing before. I promise, next time I will rig all my plugs for C&R and try my best to handle the fish quickly as possible for a safe release. Yes, like any fishing video on KZread it is about bragging and showing your catch, fishing is a bloody sport and these things happen. All the best!
