"String" User Oscillator for Korg Minilogue XD

    Just an FYI that I have now completed the Prologue version of the String oscillator. The presets for the Prologue match the Minilogue XD as I can but there will be a few subtle differences due to the difference in capabilities and architectures between the two synths. Please visit my SoundMangling store for the digital download.

    Fantastic work as usual, another insta-buy. A question for you- would you ever consider a video explaining how you handle things like aliasing, etc, within the programming? I'm developing some oscillators myself and have been playing around with biquad filtration and oversampling but am quickly running into the limitations of processing on the XD itself. It's been tough to find concrete resources on the 'net, and with the Nu:Tekt coming out soon, I expect there are going to be a whole host of new programmers for the 'logue series. Thanks again!

    Thanks very much :) I have had a lot of people ask me for programming tips for the user oscillators and a tutorial video is something I am contemplating but it would be a lot of work. The problem is that knowing C/C++ syntax is not enough to get something to work on the Korgs, resources are so minimal, there is no feedback when things go wrong or to debug an issue, it really is a poor environment to program against. I guess I have some tips I could give from my experiences so far but to be honest a lot of it comes down to a methodical approach and a huge amount of iterative trial and error to get stuff to work :(

    You're welcome :) The keys are better than many mini keys - a bit longer but still very narrow. I'm ok noodling around but I make constant mistakes if I am playing anything serious. You'll see in my videos I tend to play a lot of black notes, they are easier to hit on this synth ;) Recording the videos is for me like playing live and using this keyboard in that kind of situation makes me nervous. In the studio with the cameras off I hook the synth up to my MIDI controller kbd...

    @@TimShoebridge Good to know. I have a 49 key controller that's pretty nice and I've thought to sell it since it only had the 1 extra octave but I'll hold off now till I get to see for myself. I have nimble fingers but full size keys are full size keys. And if I consider purchasing any oscillators your string one will definitely be in mind as I like the idea of combining that with the ensemble/chorus effect to make a string section w/ the analog osc's combined. Thanks for the helpful info Tim!

    Tim how you feeling about the XD compared with the Peak? I saw an earlier video you posted about not quite being able to get the warmth out the original minilogue. Is the XD doing it more for you? I'm considering both options, I got the impression the Korgs had a certain kind of clear 'hardness' that I wasn't sure about (I might be wrong) and I'm still a sucker for the warmth I get even from my old Ensoniq ESQ that I'm always trying to see if I can find in modern synths. Wondering about the peak...and the XD. Any thoughts appreciated

  • @TimShoebridge

    @TimShoebridge

    5 жыл бұрын

    I'll be perfectly honest with you up front which is that I sold the Peak at the start of the year. Not because it is a bad synth, it is actually a great synth, but I had created so many presets for it that I found myself going back to presets too much rather than making new sounds. When I get too familiar with an instrument I tend to sell it and move on. I know that might sound contradictory but I prefer to keep discovering. The Peak for me is a great all-rounder, it is great at playing leads and playing pads, but dare I say it is not outstanding at either. If you want an amazing lead mono synth then a real analog synth is I think the way to go, and if you want an outstanding poly synth for huge pads then there are both digital and analog synths that excel at that kind of role better than the Peak. The Minilogue XD is not in the same league as the Peak in any way. Envelopes aren't great, the filter is basic and I personally don't like the mid-range tone it generates when any resonance is applied, you get just the one LFO, modulation routings in general are extremely limited, and of course polyphony is limited but we now have the option to polychain units. But despite all those negatives, there is something very charming and playable about the XD, it's a great synth for noodling and creating. And of course the extendable user oscillator is pretty unique. In terms of sound as I said I am not keen on the tone of the filter, and without any filter or effects the sound of the VCOs to me sound brittle and weak, but to compensate that the effects on the XD are really exceedingly good, they can transform the overall sonic character of the synth and you can get some really warm and rich sounds from it.

    @@TimShoebridge Thanks for the reply Tim...its the brittleness, the best word for it, that I get from the Korg stuff generally for which effects aren't really a compensation. Its actually the same reaction I have to the Dave Smith synths. I'm gonna have a play around of a few more, the Erebus also really interests me, different to the Peak of course, I really like what I hear from that in the quality of the sound
