Striking Hollywood Writers Reach Tentative Deal with Studios After 146 Days on Picket Line
The Writers Guild of America has announced that a tentative deal has been reached between striking writers and Hollywood studios, four months after the strikes shut down production of scripted movies and television. The WGA leadership will meet Tuesday to vote on the deal, which includes many of the demands of the striking writers, including higher pay and residual payments for streaming content and new rules about the use of artificial intelligence. “It’s not a done deal yet,” says labor writer Alex Press, who says it’s ultimately up to rank-and-file members to approve the plan.

AI extra character generation of and when it's able to animate a performance is an issue that probably needs new laws in place. Probably a copyright or something like that for your likeness and voice

Laws must be passed but alas with this our current congress not such how long it would take. Have you seen the speech that Stephen Fry did at the tech-base Cognitive X in London? By Cloe Taylor on 9-15-2023 - This is an excerpt: ‘Among those warning about the technology’s potential to cause harm is British actor and author Stephen Fry, who told an audience at the CogX Festival in London on Thursday about his personal experience of having his identity digitally cloned without his permission. “I’m a proud member of [actors’ union SAG-AFTRA], as you know we’ve been on strike for three months now. And one of the burning issues is AI,” he said. A key sticking point for actors on strike is the possibility that studios could use AI to make digitally replicate their image without compensating them fairly for using their likeness. Speaking at a news conference as the strike was announced, union president Fran Drescher said AI “poses an existential threat” to creative industries, and said actors needed protection from having “their identity and talent exploited without consent and pay.” During his speech at CogX Festival on Thursday, Fry played a clip to the audience of an AI system mimicking his voice to narrate a historical documentary. “I said not one word of that-it was a machine. Yes, it shocked me,” he said. “They used my reading of the seven volumes of the Harry Potter books, and from that dataset an AI of my voice was created and it made that new narration.” What you heard was not the result of a mash up, this is from a flexible artificial voice, where the words are modulated to fit the meaning of each sentence,” Fry told the audience at CogX Festival on Thursday. “It could therefore have me read anything from a call to storm parliament to hard porn, all without my knowledge and without my permission. And this, what you just heard, was done without my knowledge. So I heard about this, I sent it to my agents on both sides of the Atlantic, and they went ballistic-they had no idea such a thing was possible.” Fry added that when he discovered his voice was being used in projects without his consent, he saw it as just the beginning of an emerging threat to creative talent, warning his angry agents: “You ain’t seen nothing yet.” “This is audio,” he said he told them. “It won’t be long until full deepfake videos are just as convincing.” 😨🤬all they did was feed his readings of Harry Potter into a computer and created his voice and nuance they used it without his permission and knowledge. Scary stuff.

sadly laws often don't come until intellectual property theft and indeed identity cloning is/will be common practice@@rickjones8005

Scary and yet very very real. Other cultures (China, India) are poised to use AI for media products and do it all digitally- No rules are in place and the moral compass of our global economy ignores any profit deterrent

Blame the producers for that one; they hold the purse strings and often want things they think are "safe," easy money-makers.

@Contractor815 Yeah point taken there. It's pretty common in most industries these days of administrators always taking the _path of least resistance_ rather than being innovative or creative.
Let’s goo 🥳 Surely now that the CEOs will have so much more free time in their hands, they’ll have no problem coming up with with a great offer for the actors too right?
No one missed them. not a single person I know has ever brought up the subject.
They don’t have a direct democracy. So membership don’t have a direct say per a member I spoke with. It’s just the elected officials- who in the wga I’d imagine are quite well off compared to other members. Republic status

Like the Stars would be anybody without the writers.
Thousands of unrepresented Below The Line production workers and IATSE guild members have been financially decimated by having their industry shut down and get nothing. We have paid for whatever the writers get with our savings, credit cards and cashed out retirement. Writers, actors, and the AMPTP have shown the crew on set and in the production office how little they actually count and there is no going back.

I'm happy you're all getting organized and I wish everyone fair pay for everything they do. Every little job matters especially in production doing some of the grindy labor that takes place behind the scenes. 👍
Writers are on strike? I hadn't noticed anything different. They can all go to Hell.
Capitalism is ALWAYS about worker exploitation. Just as corporations have a fudiciary responsibility to their shareholders, workers have a fudiciary responsibility to their well being. 🤔

This is not a demonization of capitalism, we live very well and plentiful on Hollywood and are well paid and well taken care of.
Dumpy? Unions he cares? Duh not.
Joe Biden joining the strike 😂😂😆. I wonder what he is going to say this time😂.
Until they can figure out how to never precede the word Why with the word Reason, let them keep striking. Hint: Reasons are provided by the answer to the question Why? If you're still not getting it, there is no Reason Who or Reason What or Reason Where or Reason When or Reason How. Reason is always of type Why so that the specification never needs to be made. Nails on a chalkboard! 😩

Why should writers get a deal when everyone else suffers just as much??
I hope the writers accept the deal. I miss Colbert!
