June 2018 Integrative Medicine Research Grand Rounds
06/05/2018
There is growing interest in developing non-pharmacological treatments that could boost natural defenses against cancer. Research at the Osher Center Connective Tissue lab has previously shown that daily gentle stretching in rats improves the resolution of inflammation. At the upcoming Osher Center Integrative Medicine Grand Rounds, Dr. Langevin will present the lab’s most recent results on stretching in a mouse model of breast cancer.
Presenter: Helene Langevin, MD

What most don't understand is that imaging procedures such as CT scans, mammograms, PET scans, etc. have very high amounts of radiation that is downplayed but eventually causes cancer. The radiation induces cancer by disrupting the molecules and electrons in your cells. The radiation is strong enough to cause double strand damage and thus a gene mutation which eventually leads to cancer 6-7 years after exposure. Then when an allopathic medicine doctors sees you have cancer from an ultrasound or CT scan, they will tell you they need to do a biopsy. Yet, if they puncture the extracellular matrix where the cancer is encaged in, this will actually help the cancer. There are various scholarly articles that show this is the case. Cancer can migrate to areas of inflammation including a biopsy when the cancer can track across the needle. Now here's my favorite part, after they help your cancer spread, a doctor will tell you your choices are either chemo or radiation. Both Chemo and radiation do not distinguish between healthy and cancer cells. It kills all cells. So you're essentially killing all of your cells hoping that you survive and it kills the cancer. This oftentimes causes rebound cancers from the other healthy cells that have been affected if you even survive the treatment and are left with permanent side effects. When they actually give you chemo and radiation, they hope that one of your repair genes, such as BRCA1, BRCA2 and/or PARP activate and repair the damage to the rest of your immune system, yet there are millions of cells in your body and it's unavoidable to have some misrepaired cells, thus causing rebound cancers later on and making you a return customer in the system.

Props for the opening slide pic of a cat stretching. The way the stretch is an art it’s satisfying just to watch

Cultures where medicine was not tied to profit-making have come up with extremely efficient medical solutions. Ancient China, India, Tibet, ME, Europe all show similar medicinal habits. Their findings just became immersed in religious practices. (Fasting, Yoga, Spicy food etc) Modern Cuba is another example. Their medical accomplishments are great.

Thank you very much for posting this excellent lecture! When watching the live transmission last week (thank you also for this opportunity), I was intrigued by how brilliantly Helene Langevin was discussing the current questions in cancer research as well as her most interesting novel findings. It is a true delight to learn from one of the leading pioneers and smartest researchers in the field.

Thank you for these insights. Always remids me that we are so young in this discipline and dont know much yet. Makes me focus on my inclusive mindset much more than excluding certain systems, techniques because of premature research findings. Thanks so much

The question is, if a person have colon cancer, how can we stretch colon to stimulate the production of resolving, for Colon? Just a general stretch all over the body will do?

Does cancer not also behave like a virus, how many cancers are caused by viruses really, could it be more than what we know
