I’ve flown several big, heavy warbirds and a landing technique that I found works well is: Stay at pattern altitude until you are ready to turn base to final. Reduce the power to idle. Let the nose fall through the horizon and settle in to trim speed for full flaps. It will be a steep approach. Gentle round out at the bottom, let it bleed off the speed and settle onto the mains. Your patterns will end up being high and tight to the runway. Warbirds have horrible stall characteristics generally and an engine failure with the power in on final typically doesn’t end well. My technique results in a good landing wether the engine keeps running or not. 👍

My guess is the rear cylinder is rich. Get it warm and run mid throttle stick and do the plier pinch test between carbs. Also I have flown several at our 120m grass strip and in calm it needs 90m to land, with a head wind 60m. You can really slow it down at full flap, go up high and do a high idle stall test…it almost stops. Landing a warbird is more throttle than elevator, get it slowed and blip the throttle, the prop wash keeps it flying and gives elevator authority. It has a huge speed range!

That engine sounds sickly compared to the Galloping Ghost engine and it's the same engine...! I am wondering if he broke in that engine long enough before installation.. Because it should not be popping the way it is... It should have a even unpropping throating sound to it... But it is a beautiful plane 1 of my favorites of all..! Oh fantastic landing by the way.... Ok...! It does sound better during it's second flight...

It doesn’t seem to be lacking power now, well it never was let’s be honest but the power of that engine is mostly torque and utilising that torque is about getting a prop matched with RPM. Johnathan, is it possible or even desirable to install a variable pitch prop? It’s worth mentioning that I’ve never got on with engines and know nothing about them. I’m purely a glider pilot and RC glider and fpv drone pilot.

If I closed my eyes, listened to the engine and imagined what airplane matched the engine sound, it would not match up with the Strega. It sounds great on the inbound run, but it always sounds to me like it’s a moment away from misfiring aka flameout. Of course this is because I’ve never had one, seen one, heard one or flown one.

Engine is sounding better as time passes, are you running it in? The model "looks" a little nose heavy to me? But that's fair in early stages.

I’m not sure about the sound on the video, but that engine doesn’t sound like it’s operating efficiently. Rough sounding on the first flight. Did not sound smooth at all even at full throttle. Are these engines finicky?? Sounded better at full throttle on flight 4, but still…….,

Break in tuning is rich so she bumbles and stumbles a bit as he tunes it progressively it will get cleaner and cleaner sounding and more crisp.....as mentioned in another comment the break in process takes some time and as flights progress so will the tuning until it reaches X hours when the owner thinks he is satisfied with break in time and then the final tune will be made for max rpm and performance then he will as the kids say .....SEND IT!!! lol

  • @Chuck_Carolina

It is part of breaking in the engine to run them rich on the first hand full of flights (full tanks run through the engine); also, they tune different on the ground then they do in the air flying. So you want to go easy and rich until the new engine settles down to where it is going to live life after it is run-in; then you can slowly work up a tune for the engine in-flight. I am sure there is more in this plane, it is just part of the teething process with a new plane/engine combination. Blowing excess fuel out the exhaust pipe is what keeps it cool, and the last thing you want is to have the engine quit in flight on a new plane while you are leaning its flight characteristics. Sputtering around like that may sound like crap, but it is the safe and sane thing to do. And yes, a new engine is finicky to a degree - they will get too hot if you go balls to the walls and try and punch holes in the sky before they are run-in. Even cowling an engine in a plane may require retuning or cause it to run hot. Change prop/change pitch??

We have 10 flights on the plane and it's getting better each flight. Don't forget along with tuning, these engines require a 20-30 run break in period before they run proper.
