The fact of the matter is SOR 4 DOES NOT feel like the originals on the Genesis. SOR 4 is horrendous it is a poor facsimile of a game, it completely lacks the feel of the original, SOR is slow cumbersome with bad controls and has some of the worst art ever to appear in a game. SOR 4 should never be compared to the originals as that would be doing the originals a complete disservice.

What makes the SOR formula work is the strategy involved in crowd management. Learning the player moveset to execute different throws and attacks based on the situation and Tying enemies up and strategically throwing and executing moves to prevent ganking, sneak attacks etc. is what gives the games depth. Can easily be extrapolated to 3D just as long as the director understands this fundemental aspect of the gameplay. Looks like they may do to an extent as there's a takedown move on display, so that adds one element of potential strategy for crowd control. They just need to add in the movesets and enemy crowding and it will work. Give the player options to flex their skills and get the satisfaction of controlling the mob well is the secret here.

basically you need a throw that you can use 360, grab and toss in any direction. You need moves that attack in all the directions, so you can maintain control...you'll need attacks that cover 360 both in the air and on the ground....and the ability to control the thrown weapons in the same way....THATS how you make a 3d beat um up....

Cool to see these series coming back, but SEGA probably shouldve started Golden Axe out with a 2D game to get thier feet wet again. Establish shit again a little more, then maybe get more experimental. With SOR4 they atleast had a very strong 2D revival. If they fuck up the 3D version there might be some room to bring it back with a 2D SOR6. Its going to be hard to match that pacing and flow of such a tight 2D game in 3D. It can be done but its a huge undertaking. Its also hard to make it feel like an SOR game at that point. I could see a behind the back style like God Hand working better for a 3D SOR.

That's too bad. Its tough these days since it takes so much more than a high quality game to be profitable. The masses often buy into alot of bullshit games, so that can overshadow the better games. I definately get the sense that SEGA is not the same company anymore. Theyve made some strange decisions in the past, so Im more confident that Golden Axe and SOR will be more like GA and SOR flavored games with completely different gameplay, likely worse than the originals. At best they will retain some of the themes but I dont have high expectations for GA or SOR in 3D, from them. Shinobi looks more promising. Crazy Taxi was a fun game for a little while when I got it on the DC, but I never got hardcore into the scoring so it didnt give me a ton of replay. Not a series Im that interested in but will check them all out. I will play through a mediocre game out of curiosity, but only pay 40 + if the games look top tier. @@ironhell813

I agree. I'm personally not on the ''all classic remakes should be 2d''...If done right jumping to 3d is the better option as sometimes adhering to the 2d style limits replay/exploration/ and can sometimes feel dated, sometimes. Of course the operative term is ''if done right''...the Mario galaxy games is prime example

I loved the 360 golden axe & I'm happy they're making another 3d one. Look at final fantasy, every day has new stuff & some plays completely different. I love it 😍 change is good 👍🏾 it's not a big risk because most people don't even know of these games. Its unfair by the way to compare the PS3/360 Era games with this new one, its another time and team behind this games so give them a chance and stop making the games down before they even been released. Another thong is to compare Taxi drivin in GTA with Crazy Taxi, how the f-word could someone compare this? Its a whole other thing. Im happy for a new arcade freaky Crazy Taxi game.

The one thing, I’m still shocked about Golden Axe, is how they are willing to try not just one, but 3 3D takes on Golden Axe without ever considering a port of Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder. I do have reservations about 3D beat em ups working as well as 2d ones, even today. On the other hand, they’ve made some pretty decent new games in some of their IPs. Shinobi has had decent titles, including 3D, but nothing really new since PS2. And they’ve generally been successful with the Phantasy Star Online games. I’m still cautiously excited for the new titles.

The former is a little limited but was an early PS2 title & the latter is quite fun if maybe more of a more fleshed out version of the Tekken Force modes which I personally enjoyed playing. Mad World on the Wii was a much more gory, beat-em-up, hack & slash hybrid but also very satisfying.

Nintendo solved that nicely with their Mario vs Donkey Kong revival. Having cartoonish characters makes the 3D transition easier in terms of looks of course. It's the looks that kept me from shilling out anything for Streets of Rage 4. It doesn't look like a SoR title. It looks more like an LSD fuelled Comix Zone sequel. I also think an updated Shinobi should follow the Saturn version in terms of a graphical leap. It was never a children's cartoon. It had a rather serious storyline even.

They could spend a lot of money making a 3D Shinobi but if it doesn't sell millions and millions, it'll bankrupt them no matter how good it is. So not spending a lot of money on these games makes sense... but then your only two choices are high-end 2D or low-end 3D. If high-end 2D is tried and true and tickles everyone's nostalgia bone... and 3D looks low-budget and isn't guaranteed to play well... I think the choice is clear.

Then it was a commercial success. I don't think it should keep with 2d forever but another sequel using the same recipe wouldn't have hurt because they could have reuse many assets and the game engine. 3d should have been brought up with a good reason, I hope they will show us an interesting 3d gimmick that will make the game worth buying
