IGN has ruined review scores for everyone's minds. Because they give out 9's like free candy, they've conditioned the public into thinking anything below a 9 is "bad." A 7/10 is a perfectly fine score. I don't know who these people are that are getting mad at the game not getting 9's and 10's like this was on people's Game of the Year lists lol

SoR2 is still a contender for one of the best beat-'em-ups of all time. Incredible graphics and sound, with combat and control that was the right combination of depth and accessibility. All SoR4 had to do (and looks like it has done) is bring that style and polish to the modern era and give the players a few new things to give the game its own identity. It looks to me like the game was successful in this. So, yeah, this looks to be living up to be the sequel we've been waiting for since 1994.

This comment gets an 11/10. Pure, unadulterated truth. Also, I love this game. Worth my money and my time. Streets of Rage 4, for me, is a 9/10. It delivered the kind of experience an older gamer like myself can really appreciate. I'm probably not in IGN's core demographic, and kids might hate this game, so I get why they gave it this score, but come on. This game is an absolute masterpiece. I can't imagine a better sequel to the original Streets of Rage trilogy.

This game has the shortest duration of play but it reminds me of my childhood playing mega drive 16-bit

all the complaints you have about it being just like the games of old are EXACTLY what i wanted this to be. i didn't want this to reinvent the wheel i wanted it to be the classic streets of rage with a few updates. i wanted it to feel like the old games. and it seems like it delivers. i can't wait to get this

@@XSAGA87 me too. i grew up on streets of rage. 2 was probably my favorite game as a kid. i've bought streets of rage 2 on multiple consoles even buying the trilogy collection on xbox one. this is everything i want. i want the familiar style and familiar play. like when he complained about the previous level bosses showing up in later levels...that's been there in literally every streets of rage game. why are you complaining about a staple of the series? hearing that it's just like the old games with some updates to combat was all i needed to buy this game.

@@XSAGA87 i actually really like the fact the unlockable 'skins' aren't just skins. that they play like the classic versions even with the police car from streets 1. this game is the ultimate nostalgia trip and stays beyond true to the original games. playing this is going to feel like reuniting with an old friend and immediately picking up where you left off.

Bottom Line: *GO BUY THIS GAME* You won't regret it.

@@Okieant I grew up with SoR on the genesis, i'm really trying to get into this but some of the enemies unblockable attacks are making me really hate it. The commissioner boss literally spams a throw attack that connects from half way across the screen!!! They've nailed the feel of the game but there are a bunch of cheap enemies.

@@SynphamyMusic You're 100% correct. The game is frustratingly bad and too easy at the same time, happens when a game isn't tested long enough. The game relies on cheap attacks, counters, armor, and limited character movement for any sense of 'difficulty.' SoR4 is many steps back from 3, and honestly should cost half of what it does.

Sounds like they've made this perfectly. The negative points you made are all positives in my book 😁

Not really. The reviewer is correct about the SOR1 characters being useless on the harder difficulties. They are too slow and have no special moves. It's RIDICULOUS. However the game is amazing. I give it a 9.

Actually Scott Pilgrim game has some really neat mechanics, and also would recommend Fight n Rage, also there is games like the arcade Alien vs Predator, and games like Dragons Crown/Guardian Heroes/Phantom breaker battlegrounds

This game is a masterpiece. From the artwork to animation, to the music. I had the original in 91, 92, and 94, and this update is a dream come true. I wish I could’ve written this review for IGN. 10 out of 10-Easy.

What in the world were you hoping they do? This is one of the deepest beat em ups out there. Deep combat. Honoring the franchise in ways other franchises should follow. Small changes that make the combat even deeper and more satisfying with welcome new characters. Awesome unlockables and a banging soundtrack. 10/10

I haven’t played a SOR game for almost 20 years I instinctively countered when the sliding guy threw me and I landed on my feet. Talk about like riding a bike.

That review was so lame ... way to kill any potential sequels if all reviews are as dumb as this ! It's a nostalgic game and a side scrolling classic what kind of innovations do you need ? Jeez

Simple but entertaining. Looking for this studio to do big things with TMNT, Golden Axe, Double Dragon and Final Fight.

i bought it and it like that but even more. its not just a simple reskin of older games. the fighting is tight, the artwork is great and there are a lot of new enemies and things to do. absolutely get this if you liked the games on genesis.

For all my Sega fans and SoR fans, this one is for us and by far our favorite game this year! I broke a tear when I played this with friends I use play to SoR1, 2, and 3 back when we were kids and to play this with my own kids. Wow a 7! Every other review I'm seeing is a 8.5 or 9. Way to disappoint us Ign. Fail. Younger people won't understand these beat em up games and didn't grow up going to the arcades. I can't wait to get my hands on this one!

IGN don't complain about innovation in Call of Duty, FIFA or Assassin's Creed which get sequels every year. Yet they complain about innovation in Streets of Rage, a franchise that hasn't had a sequel in 26 years!

Shut up and take my money. I played the heck out of streets of rage 2 back in the 90s on my genesis!!

Now Capcom. Give us a new final fight already.

They should made a new 2D Final Fight,with thecombat mechanics of Fight'N'Rage.(combo system,branching story-paths) With new updated designs for Hagger,Guy,Cody maybe some new characters and also have characters from all 3 16-bit era FF games as unlockables,1:1 fighting mode,time attack,survival mode and other cool extras.

Yes! This and make it look like the original arcade game in graphics and artstyle but with updated character models, moves, stages, and include all characters from all three games! Online play, with free dlc that adds more stages and challenge modes!

I'm getting this, and would love to see Double Dragon get the same treatment. I think the art style is leaps and bounds better than that Battletoad remake. Can't wait to play this with my son, who's stoked and never played a Streets of Rage game, and I'll also play with my wife, who is already rolling her eyes.

SOR4 exceeded my expectations in every way possible! The soundtrack is amazing. Listening to it in the car all the time. Little replayability? I bought the game twice!!! Unlocked everything on the Switch and then I bought it for PS4 because I wanted to do it all again with the Dual Shock controller :D

I never played the original streets of rage games but after I got the 4th I immediately fell in love with nearly everything in it

If you didn't play the originals when they were relevant then you won't understand what people are looking for from this. That doesn't mean that you can't criticize the game or decide that it's not for you, just that it wasn't aimed at you (people in general, this isn't aimed at anyone except perhaps the reviewer).

Dude probably just wanted a Double Dragon Neon clone...

In the end it doesn't matter, this is a day one purchase for me. I thought I was going to get a "this is repetitive" comment from the reviewer, which would most likely mean that person never lived through the 90's and played a beat-em-up, so at least there's that. I'm hype for this game regardless of what anyone says. Most modern gamers will never know what it was like to rent the original games from a video store and have their minds blown after playing it with their brother at home on a random Saturday. If even a fraction of that magic is there then I'm in.

I can only speak for myself but I played the very first streets of rage one and two when I was just a little kid in the 90s on my sega genesis and it was really fun fast forward 20 years. As an adult I feel this game is truly a treasure. In times of uncertainty especially during this pandemic this game has once again restored that feeling that everything’s gonna be OK

It's a Beat em up game. It's supposed to have unforgiving parts in it to learn new strategies and for it to be rewarding at the end. 10/10 for this game and yes I would love to see dlc crossover between Final Fight with Cody as Mayor and other characters including new stages.

really, cmon. a 7 for one of the best beat em up games ever to come out? This game set the bar so damn high for any future beat em ups its rediculous.

This might have been the most pretentious review I've heard, couldn't get through longer than a minute. Not every game needs to reinvent the wheel.

Have to say this again can't believe in defending ign but if this was cod or new super Mario bros you would say the same thing

never played a streets of rage game before this one but absolutely loved this. the soundtrack and visuals alone were enough to win me over

"It renders them unusable on the harder difficulties" Is this guy crazy?! The SoR1 characters are some of the best ones to use on that difficulty purely for their damage alone!

I'm so buying Streets of Rage 4! This looks awesome!

If you liked Streets of Rage 2, you're going to love this game.... Simple. The art style. The gameplay. The music, boss levels, atmosphere, items, weapons, and destructibles. There's pretty much no way out of it; it's a really great compliment to the Streets of Rage series from the MegaDrive era.

This feels like I stepped into a time machine and went back to my childhood. The feel of the game, the music, the style and the mechanics are all there and are untainted. It is such a relief that this game has been made, a video game that feels like an actual video game. It is a rare thing these days to see a game get released that makes you immediately know that you are going to play it and you already know that you are going to enjoy it. And it's just icing on the cake when that game goes above and beyond your expectations and delivers a game that truly brings back the joy and the wonder that only the best games had to offer. 10/10, I can't wait to replay this game over and over and over again!

"It's too nostalgic" so you hate old games plus there is nothing to nostalgia in sor 4 the game picks up after part 3. I don't know what ign is talking about

I love this game, having just completed it using 5 characters so far. Awesome visuals, great new music tunes (Yuzo Koshiro involved in some), and very fun beat 'em up gameplay in the classic style. Can't wait to unlock all the characters. Shiva, Max and more. 5/5

@@CydonianKnights11 I know. I was thinking it was going to be your usually 8 stages. Yeah, I'm disappointed that we're not getting a newly designed Skate, but who knows. Maybe we will as dlc. Since the story takes place 10 years after 3, he'll probably be in his 20's.

It looks incredible and a worthy sequel. Given SOR2 is a 10/10 classic, 7 feels a little low. If SOR2 is one of your favorite games, the TiredOldHack review is the best one I've seen so far.

I remember playing streets of rage 2 on sega genesis as a little kid, addicted to it. Yesterday i posted the entire gameplay of the game cause i missed it. Now a day later I'm here looking at my childhood memory continuing. Man i love it.

It was not exclusive. It did get an arcade port of sort later. But yes it is more known as a console original.

I demand a better reviewer for this Streets 4. This guy sounds like he thinks “Gone with the Rapture” is too difficult for him.

I spent countless hours playing through SoR 3. I remember when i found out you could unlock Shiva the first level boss, and if you played w the 6 button controller(the ones that look like arcade machine controls) you could do their star moves without having to get the stars

As a SOR player in the 90s, this is simply the best one. OK, I do play it with the retro music. SOR4 Shiva needs to be playable though.

Streets of rage can be a really fun video game to play but the graphics and gameplay need to be next generation all the way. Also bring back the kid in rollerblades.

No, and Skate has 2 playable versions in the game. The point of Skate was to be the smaller character... it's been years... Skate is not viable. Cherry took his role.

Can’t wait to play this. If anyone’s looking for a streets of rage where you can play as versions of characters from prequels and sequels who also have their own unique special moves, Streets of Rage Remake is where you’ll get it

Jchibz _ unfortunately, the characters are so true to their respective games that they tend to be at a disadvantage. What I meant was that, in Streets of Rage Remake for example, you could use versions of characters from SoR1 and they’d have a fully fleshed out move set. Blitz attacks, special attacks etc. In this game, if you were to pick SoR1 axel, you have no blitz attack and no special moves. You’re limited to calling the police car, just like in the first game

Chaos Animator yeah I get that but just the mere fact they have different move sets means it’s not the original versions of them. It’s just a skin to look like the original. You are looking past the fact they made all versions of streets of rage fit into a modern game. The moves are exactly the same but can potentially juggle now. The only reason why the remake have them all having new moves set are because they technically wouldn’t work with that battle engine in the same way. They already showed they could even upgrade the police car with Astel. People who never play the original can actually use those characters in their true form. If they play the remake and then go back to trying the original, it would be disappointing cause it’s not really the same. The fact that all mechanics are intact makes it insanely genius. You can actually play this with every streets of rage battle mechanics. For example, if you felt streets of rage 2 was the best battle system you can just use those characters here. Everything you loved about them are intact with now mechanics left out. The remake then are old skins with movesets from the originals. Yes they may be upgraded and smoother but it’s not true to the game. This upgraded the originals while keeping them sacred. I get your sentiment but the amount of characters that would take, I would rather them just bring a whole bunch of new characters if they will have movesets similar to part 4. This wasn’t a remake, they actually expanded the universe while keeping the original feel inside it. And they are also not at a disadvantage, the older characters have more defense and strength. Also they were never meant to be better, it was to preserve the history of streets of rage. Yes the remake is great but that’s not what Sega created. If we rewrite how they play then future generations may never see what the real streets of rage was.

I still want to get this game.

If anyone’s craving other scrolling beat em ups give Fight N Rage a try. IMO it’s the best one out there: different routes, multiple endings, combos, loads of stuff to unlock and more.

Streets of rage 2 was the first game I ever played I was 2 at the time I’m 26 now. Honestly those were the days 😅

Right. I've been checking all week. Nintendo has it the eshop for pre-order. You would think Sony would update the psn store but they didn't. It probably won't be there until tonight. 😒

Streets of Rage has a special place in my heart as Blaze was my first crush in gaming. For me, "Hishousouzan" comes before "Hadouken".
