Streets of Rage 2 is hands-down the best beat'em up ever and still as much fun today as 20 years ago. Plus the graphics and music still look good.

i can't seriously think of a better one. allot of great ones for sure. even sor 4 doesn't pass it. tough 4 really rekindled the flame, 4 pulled it of good.

Yeah definitely, i was a HUGE TMNT fan, but SoR perfected this genre back then. I like the RPG elements added to more recent games like Scott Pilgrim and River City remake.

This is probably the best game-music of the entire 16-bit generation.

+Deathbrewer No no no, that's (sorta) what I mean, instead of everything being more elegantly simplified and straightforward in the future, everything has instead become more mixed up and complex than in the past. I reference BTTF because right now it's 2015, the year Marty actually arrives in the future. Basically I'm not saying that the complexity of the arrangement here is futuristic, I'm criticizing that the setup is actually stranger and less intuitive than one might have expected it to have become.

There's actually a streets of rage fan remake (Just google SOR Remake) you guys should check out. Combines elements and stages from all 3 games and all the characters along with some options like turning off damage between players.

Yep, this is legitimately the best co-op beat em up for the Sega Genesis. This and Gunstar Heroes for sure. Some of the best memories of my childhood. The music is amazing too. Thumbs all the way up.

For everyone wondering how there are so many enemies on screen it's the blast processing.

Yuzo Koshiro, probably the greatest Video Game Music Composer of the 16bit era... possibly ever as well.

SOR 2 best 16bit beat em up ever, period. also some of the best 16bit music ever too. I liked Final fight but the Snes couldnt pull it off, where as the MegaCD version proved the Megadrive could of done Final Fight better than the Snes.

Love the midi music in this game, some of my favorite, right up there with megaman 2 and ducktales, hehe. I also love the muffled midi voices (street fighter is another good example). Always liked to equate the goofy midi stuff they say with something in English. For instance, it sounds like Blaze says "Nicole coldcuts" when she does her flip, lol. Would love to know what other people think =)

Again Elgato man, super easy allows you to stream right from it's software, and you can connect anything to it that has at least composite video. So you can play the actual cartridges on it, or use them through the retron that mike has onto the elgato.

You missed the 1up hidden at the beginning, bottom left. And the one outside the truck in stage 2.

15:00 The fight against Jet seems similar to the fight against Baxter from the SNES gameTurtles in Time. Even the environment has a familiar look.

Batman Returns is probably my favorite beat em up from this era, actually. The sound effects from Batman throwing dudes at the wall was so satisfying. But I love all the beat em' ups, it's just fun to suplex emeffers

The Super Nintendo doesn't have a beat em up that can hold a candle to Streets of Rage 2.

+branaa09 Are you kidding? One palette swapped character to play as. Game play is in slowmotion. Music and graphics aren't as good or as appealing. Hell SDD doesn't hold a candle to the original Streets of Rage.

Spencer Bradbury Even DD1 and DD2 DD3 on NES blows SDD out of the water.

Loved it live and thanks for reading out some of my questions!

Finally. One of my all time favourite games. And James is on the couch too; what a nerdgasm. So many frustrating things about this though, all the elevator stages! picking up a weapon a bunch of times and losing both of them!! Being able to hit each other!!! And the robots...the ****ing robots!!!! Still a classic though. Shame on the last level. I got to a point as a kid where I could beat this solo on the hardest difficulty with no continues. (I didn't play much else..this and sonic.) Couldn't imagine the hours I'd have to put in to do that now and the sheer frustration. Just adding. Ryan great guy to pick for the channel. Really knows his stuff about PC gaming. Yes to SWKOTOR and definitely to Diablo II

can't believe I missed this LIVE. btw the best Sega Master System game is by far Ghouls n Ghosts, it was way better than the NES one, wish they tried it. Edit: Doubt they will though, it's about 90$, damn!!!, wish i saved my copy

I can't believe I missed this live stream. Then again I probably didn't even know you guys were doing live streams at the time. Streets of Rage was based on the design of Golden Axe which was huge in arcades. If you play streets of Rage 1 its specials more closely resemble the magic attacks of Golden Axe then the special attacks of Final Fight. Streets of Rage 2 feels like a much smoother playing Final Fight though.

I remember being at Magfest when Yuzo Koshiro (music composer for this game) was there. During a panel with him, when people could line up and ask questions, a guy walks up dressed as Axel. Guy dressed as Axel: Want to hear a joke? Koshiro: Sure. Axel BLASSTAPUNCHHEh! Koshiro and his translator talk. Suddenly the translator lady has an oh shit look on her face. Translator: That is Koshiro-san's voice. Axel turns and walks away....

Streets of Rage 2 is soooooooo goooood

I loved this game growing up.

Loved the live stream. As far as Streets of Rage, I do like the sequel although the original did have its charm.

This game is _so_ much better than Final Fight, heh. Favorite 16-bit games ever made.

Love this on 3DS. This, Out Run, Space Harrier, and Fantasy Zone II are all great on 3DS. You haven't lived until you've played Space Harrier in 3D.

You should play Bare Knuckle 3 for Mike and James Mondays sometime since the Western Streets of Rage 3 was edited and censored a fair bit... ;)

I gotta agree on Diablo 2 for best dungeon crawler, hell, one of the best games in general.

Ryan has good taste in fighting games...Soul Calibur 2 would have to be my favorite now that I think about it. Its also a weird case where the quality of the game may even supersede my love for it(which is massive).

Great . Best beaten up of 16 bit era. There was an arcade machines of that in fact, very rare, using a hardware adaptation that was called "megaplay", that was almost a genesis hardware. I talk with some retrogamers here in Brazil that even have pics of it. Great live, congratulations guys

Fun Fact: If you time your hits correctly with Axel and Blaze, you can keep the basic enemies in a permanent stun and perform an infinite combo!
