“Animal hybrids, cyborgs and elementals, just like in Street Fighter” you say that like those don’t make sense in a world with mutants, demons, clones, and a dictator with physic powers.

Ingrid might be some sort of sun elemental. When they introduced Twelve as a playable character in SFIII the franchise was irrevocably launched into science fiction, continuing the theme with Seth in IV. If anything, the RPG was just ahead of the curve.

@@timothymclean Late reply, but I think you're missing the fact that said psychic dictator has an entire army of genetic experiments and clones. This is the exact style of science fiction that animal human hybrids were created for. If anything, I'm surprised they didn't go that dictation yet.

Fun fact: The relationship between Capcom & White Wolf also resulted in Capcom USA attempting to make a beat-em-up based off of Werewolf for the Sega Saturn. It didn't get very far in development, but a prototype did leak at some point

Just Werewolf? You'd think a fighting game would want to draw on the whole World of Darkness for as many characters as possible... Sure, maybe the story mode might focus on the Werewolf side as the "hero" side, but the Vampire clans have so many distinct powers that could make for interesting fighting game character designs and movesets, you'd have to be crazy not to want to include at least a few.

@AztecCroc and? Vampires and Mages would be plenty if variety to bolster a fighting game roster. Especially visually, as meaningful as the differences between werewolf packs/tribes might be lore and gameplay-wise, they're still all just big hairy beasts at a glance.

Back in the 90s I was a white wolf game demonstrater. I would demo WW products at game stores and cons and get free product in return. All the demonstrators were in an email list and at this time I had learned of the then recently out of print SF TTRPG and asked if anyone knew where I could get a copy on the demo team mail list and another demonstrater in New Zealand (I lived in Canada) sent me the core book and an adventure module (The Perfect Warrior) for free. I ended up playing Street Fighter with my gaming group a lot, and one member of my old group still lists it as his favorite TTRPG. I'll always be grateful to that guy who sent me those books.

@@zigmenthotep It was official, but in a confusing way. The publisher obtained the rights to Capcom's games and published a comic book and an SFZ3 RPG on their own system (3D&T), including setting Final Fight in a supplement. Later, the licensor offered them SF:StG. They accepted and published it, selling the entire print run within a few months. But this resulted in a legal problem, as another publisher had exclusive rights to White Wolf games in Brazil. They settled in court, but this made it impossible to publish the SF: StG supplements in Brazil. This publisher brought in its magazine the sheets and styles of Sagat, Vega and M. Bison, also the sheet and style of Rose in an adventure.

I really like the look of this game, the combat does a shockingly good job of adapting fighting games, and I think the storyteller system would be really good for the melodrama of a Mortal Kombat style story. With the expansions for more character options, I think this could be really fun.

The first edition of the Wizardry TTRPG was released in 1988, based on the Wizardry series of CRPGs, but only in Japanese I think. Honestly it wouldn't surprise me if it turned out this was originally proposed as a tie-in to the first Darkstalkers game, which came out the same year. That would explain the "weird guys" rules with animal hybrids and elementals and stuff, the darker gorier tone compared to SF and why White Wolf of all people were making it and it would be a way to logically have the line cross over with other White Wolf splats. And then Capcom pulled a Capcom and made 'em milk Street Fighter instead. Not to mention the third Darkstalkers game was even marketed as a World of Darkness game when it first hit the arcades in English for some reason, with the White Wolf logo on the flyers and everything.

White Wolf released a blister book titled World of Darkness: Combat, which took the fighting system of the SF:STG and adapted it for the WoD, which was their Vampire/Werewolf/etc. line. So, in effect, you could do Darkstalkers.

It’s not quite a ttrpg in the traditional sense but Metroid did have a game book with ttrpg elements that released in 1986 called Metroid: Zebes Invasion Order. In MZO you play as Samus going through the events of the first Metroid game for the first two thirds and then you switch to a choose your own adventure book for the last, it’s a strange experience. The gameplay portion is actually really fun since it’s designed with backtracking in mind so you can go back to previous areas to heal and look for items without going against the spirit of the game.

Yes! I love this game. I get flack by WoD fans for liking this game and hate when I jokingly call it "The Greatest Storyteller Game EVER!" LOL You really hit all the right nails on the head with this review! Great job!! I pick this game up back in the day. My objective was to ignore the Street Fighter II elements and run it as a kung-fu/blaxploitation setting of my own making. I had scenarios related to crime-fighting or vengeance, while the action was based on beat 'em up games like Double Dragon and Streets of Rage, so I had to adjust the rules a little for group-fighting. There where no world-wide tournaments, no elite OP fighters, nor an omnipresent criminal organization. Everything was local and fairly down-to-earth.
