Streaming baseball and softball games

Streaming baseball and softball games: Recommended equipment.
EDIT: Since the recording of this video, firmware in the HERO9 has changed (that also applies to the HERO10) that make removing the internal battery while using external power much more important than saving the date and time. The critical heat limit of these cameras is much higher when the internal battery is removed. As such, you will have far less heat related issues without the internal battery.

    My Hero 7 would sometimes overheat but I've learned to pull the internal battery and hook up to an external battery that we put in a mesh bag and hang it by a carabiner to the chainlink. If you go this route you'll need to pull the accessory door off to access the charging port but this will make the camera no longer waterproof! Also be aware that if you pull the internal battery the date will reset after awhile and you'll have to reset the date. Otherwise all your games will be dated 2016. We learned this the hard way. The LynxSpyder is awesome once we got the hang of it. Also a 256 GB card is essential.

    Thanks for the info! I need to start streaming my daughters basketball and softball games. KZread doesn't let me stream from my phone unless I have 1,000 subscribers. Plus I want to use my phone separately during the games. So I'm looking for the easiest all-in-one setup. Everything doesn't have to be perfect, but it needs to be watchable or it doesn't do any good. I was leaning towards the Mevo Start until I saw your video and now I'm confused. :-) What would you recommend if you had to choose only one? And I'll use a tripod for basketball games and your LynkSpyder for the softball games.

    Josh, awesome video! Thank you for this. Wanted to add/ask about the Ztylus Revolver M Series lens kit for cell phones. I've used it for over a year after getting complaints of the field of view being too narrow. It has a secured wide angle lens that works well but limits the RetiCAM clamp placement due to it's size. Have you ever tried using an external lens kit? Would the articulating arm make that easier? The limited placement is definitely a hindrance. I have been looking for a better solution. Maybe a GoPro? The last time I used a GoPro the streaming was skipping bad. Maybe lowering the streaming quality? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

    Yes and no. I have found two spots (just above the top left corner of frame and just inside the bottom left corner of opening) that lets me get close enough that the chain link is only visible in a corner but the field view is clear and 1st & 3rd fully included. To me (and those watching the baseball stream) it’s more/better than what ai get out of the standard iPhone lens. But definitely a pain to get it set just right each game. Sometimes I think if the Slyder bar was 1-2 inches longer on either side, I would have a lot more positions to use. I switched to GoPro Hero7 recently. Better for positioning but still working out the bugs with lag though. Any suggestions or recommended settings for GoPro streaming using GameChanger? BTW absolutely love the LynkSpyder mount. So much better than all the others I have used. Most secured and stable by far.

    The HERO10 still cannot adjust FOV when streaming. But the HERO11 recently got that feature added. The HERO11 handles heat much better than the 10. So they might not even try pushing this new feature to the 10. But that is total speculation on our part.

    Agreed. As the streaming solution market is advancing so fast, any video we produce would be outdated quickly. Our goal is to point customers in the right direction with hardware that we feel is scalable to the future advancements. In your specific case, if live scoring overlays are not needed, FaceBook and KZread seem to be the best places to stream from a Smartphone. FaceBook is usually easier for your guests to view. KZread tends to produce a better product, and is more stable to signal variation. Additionally, KZread is more tolerant of the camera picking up music playing in the background. FaceBook on the otherhand will almost always shut your stream down immediately.

    Hi Josh. I just started experimenting live streaming with a GoPro 9 through GameChanger. My first attempt resulted in glitchy and poor reception for those watching live. I’m using my unlimited Verizon Hotspot for connection. Should I be selecting 720P or can I use 1080P? Which one is best? Is my hotspot connection the reason for the glitchy and poor reception? Thanks for your feedback

  • @LynkSpyder

    We usually stream at 720p or less when using cellular based carriers. It is just the nature of the beast that at the ballpark, cell service will be over-saturated with all of the connected devices. Going much higher than 720p isn't generally feasible. The only exception would be by using a bonded connection using multiple carriers.

    I'm having an issue lately with my new iphone 14 Pro getting it close enough to fence so that i can get a good field of view without the fence in the picture. A lot of fence mounting rigs keep it too far away to not get the fence in the shot, while utilizing all of the lenses. Any solutions to this?

  • @LynkSpyder

    @LynkSpyder

    Жыл бұрын

    I think the first thing to keep in mind is that there really isn't a single position you can place the phone on the fence and run through the range of all of the zoom capability of multi lens smartphones (IE: iPhone 13/14 and Google Pixel 7). This is because, as you probably know, at certain points of the range, the phone will bounce between different lenses. As these lenses are in multiple physical locations, the point of view will change. What we recommend to do is, place your phone up against the fence (without a mount) and set your composition. Adjust zoom, focus if used, and angle until you get the shot you want, without fence in the shot. Once that is done, you can mount your camera to the fence and physically move it's location until you repeat the manual position. The next step is to make sure the clamp you use to hold your phone is mounted in such away as to allow it to get close enough to the fence. In short, this usually means the "meat" of the clamp is on the LCD side of the smartphone. We have a video where we talk about this in more detail: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aIVo1Ltpode3cco.html

    What software can I use the stream?

  • @LynkSpyder

    @LynkSpyder

    Жыл бұрын

    There are a lot of variables at play here. If you want to stream and score (with scoreboard overlay), you will want to look at GameChanger or SidelineHD. If you already use GC to score, you would want to go that route. If you like iScore and/or a more simple scoring solution, SidelineHD is a great option. If scoring isn't needed, the most simple solution is to natively stream to FaceBook or KZread. That requires no special software. Just use the app related to your device to perform the stream. But if your plan is to use multiple cameras, it gets even trickier at that point. Our preference for multiple cameras is still a hardware based solution. We like the Yololiv YoloBox Pro. It will stream natively to all of the sources above without additional software. If you want to use a PC for your streaming control center, you will want to look into OBS. I hope this helps....I know it is a lot to soak in. The easiest solution to start with is a smartphone. It will handle nearly any single camera solution.

    At this point, the suggestions (other than we now recommend removing the internal GoPro battery) have pretty much remained the same. The GoPro HERO11 is a great little camera; perhaps the best GoPro since the HERO5. And while GoPro has fixe d one of their streaming issues (you can now use Field Of View adjustment when streaming) it still has come connection issues that prevent us from recommending it at this time. We will be making a newer video showing some other hardware options (such as the YoloBox device) but at this time we still recommend streaming with a Smartphone and recording with a GoPro. And we are using the GoPro HERO11, and still experimenting with the Google Pixel 7 Pro and Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max. We also still use our trusty Google Pixel 5. More to come...

    Will in coming calls of text affect the stream on iPhone?

  • @LynkSpyder

    @LynkSpyder

    Жыл бұрын

    Most definitely. When recording with a smartphone, it is always best to turn on the do not disturb. And if I'm just recording and not streaming with it, I even set it to airplane mode. Specifically with an iPhone, for security reasons, most things won't run in the the background. So if you receive a call or even a text, it will generally stop the stream. Android is more flexible in this regard.

    We certainly will in the future. We have held up because most of the items suggested still hold true. There have been no physical changes to the Mevo Start since this video. While they have added some software features that mostly apply to to multiple cameras, the sensor is still too small to allow for crop zoom, without losing quality. And the FOV limitations have not changed. However, while GoPro has a long way to go in the streaming world, the FOV issue is fixed with the HERO 11 and 12. Our 12 testing is still ongoing, but we certainly like what we see. For now, our recommendation holds true (for the most part): Stream with a smartphone and/or record with a GoPro.
