I find my ratio to be around 7:3:2 for brownies and even better ratios for bullies.

Ben, I fly fish under the lights at night, off a pier with pink yarn streamers as I stroll down the walkway. Sometimes I have to set my beer down on the railing to land a speckled trout. I forgot to mention the salt water. My ratio is about the same.

Another thing that works for me is keeping the rod tip low and stripping the fish in. I treat every fish like it's a musky. The only downside to this strategy is needing higher quality hooks.

I use a treble hook on my bottom hook and it helps with upping the ratio 😂

10 : 9 : 8 ratio is possible with streamer if you respect some strict retrieve rules.

Agree with this ratio. I fish saltwater and often blind cast into likely areas. I suspect there are times the fish spits out the fly and I can't sense it. Also in salt water situations hooks get dulled if a backcast hits the sands.

I’m new to fly fishing for trout. I’ve been bass fishing for 55 years and spinner bait fishing if you get 100 bites you catch 96 fish! I thought I was doing something wrong since I miss and lose a lot of trout. Apparently 3 trout from 20 bites is good?

Don't trout set - good advice - my default hookset is a strip set, which works fine until a friend hands me their dry fly rod. I shudder to think of all the dry fly tippets I've popped with a hearty strip-set.🤣
