Strawberry plants in summer, cut stems to the ground

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Once-bearing strawberry plants, not ever bearers, are easier to manage after last harvest by cutting all growth to 2cm, an inch above ground level.
You can add a little compost at this point, even over the top, New growth will push through.
This is 8th July in Somerset UK, temperate climate, colder than usual in 2024.
The variety is Marshmello that finished, and Florence that is fruiting in July.

I had never heard of cutting back strawberry plants in summer. But I did it last year when I saw a video of you on this topic. And they were fine. Also no more slug hiding places. It just looks tidy. This year I left two plants, which produced really sweet strawberries, to develop runners for new plants.

Heard the same about cutting back raspberries in winter, but I do know they still spread underground. Would be cool to see a vid on here from Charles about berries!

God gave you a gentle and kind spirit, Mr. Dowding. What a gift. Thanks for all the help. Home-grown strawberries are my favorite. Much more intense flavor. I only grow a couple of my own plants because we have local places that grow tons and don’t spray them or anything. I can go pick a large amount at one time, eat some fresh (even while I’m picking!), make a cobbler, and make some jam with the rest. How blessed I am!

Surely you do want to keep some runners if replacing the oldest strawberry plants from the plot each year. My understanding is that strawberry plants decline in productivity after 4-5 years and that it's best to remove those plants and replace with 2 year old ones (keeping the one year old plants elsewhere to grow on) so some runners are useful to get plants for next year.

  • @CharlesDowding1nodig

Yes, but you don't replace them every year, or at least I don't because I don't want the extra work. So this patch will crop for one or two more years I reckon, and I can take some rooted runners for new plants this autumn,

I really should have netted mine over. I’m not sure if it’s birds stealing my fruit or what but not so long ago everything looked like it needed a week or two left or so, came back 2 days later and the plants were there leaves intact but the strawberries seem to be in a different dimension :(

I went for it so hard this year for the first time, and was rewarded with the LEGITLY tastiest strawberry of my life so far. It just was over again way too quickly, because the realization took me so long, haha. It's an inspiration to do even better next year, whoooooey!

I may try the topping off method you show here. A few gardeners I follow, suggested I dethatch my berry patch and they have taken 4 years to come back. I have Alpines. I'm hoping there are MORE runners, as my climate doesn't have slugs.

For sure you can do that, but thre's a risk of building the slug and snail population. That would certainly happen here. Also the fruits are smaller from the density of so many plants rooting

I decided to grow strawberries next year. Haven’t grown any in a long time. Didn’t know you could cut them off to get around having 500 runners to have to deal with. I usually don’t have slug problems but when I grew them before it was snails (their rich relatives) that ate my berries.
