Stravinsky: Petrushka, Dance Russe, solo guitar by Tim Sparks
Tim Sparks plays his solo guitar version of the Dance Russe from the Ballet Petrushka, by Igor Stravinsky.
Stravinsky composed the music during the winter of 1910--11 for Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. It was premièred in Paris at the Théâtre du Châtelet on 13 June 1911. The title role was danced by Vaslav Nijinsky.
The work is characterized by the so-called Petrushka chord (consisting of C major and F♯ major triads played together), a bitonality device heralding the appearance of the main character. This was a revolutionary innovation for music in the early 20th century.
The Petrushka chord combines two major triads whose roots are spaced by a tritone. For instance, a C major triad combined with an F# major triad creates the Petrushka chord.
Jazz musicians can think of the Petrushka chord as an altered 7th chord, for example, C 7 with flat 9 and sharp 11.

Thanks for your nice comments. This was a very challenging project. It was suggested to me by Greg Cohen, the bass player for John Zorn who was also the bass and music director for Tom Waits. We were driving from Torino to Florence, Italy on a tour and talking and he told me that Petrushka might be a good guitar solo arrangement. So I took up his challenge and worked on it and now this is the result...so far.
Thank you Tim. I'm sure Stravinsky would have been impressed with this performance and transcription.
Amazing. never thought could play this on guitar.

@@TCGUITAR Oh please do. Looking forward to listening to it.
This is awesome! I've been dying to hear anything by Stravinsky on guitar. It translates really well. The way it shifts so constantly around so many different moods. Harp-like, haunting neoclassical goodness. His ballet score Orpheus would be heavenly on guitar.

Robin Mendoza-Robinson Thanks for your thoughts, I have some other Stravinsky arrangements, a Tango , a Gallop (Can-Can) and a waltz dedicated to Saint Saens, piano pieces...I am working on a collection of solo guitar arrangements of Stravinsky, Prokofiev and Shostakovich. Hoping to record it later this year. I really appreciate your interest.
Great and yes brilliant, Stravinsky on guitar is a real challenge!
Absolutely jaw dropping...it's beyond the Romanian Folk Dances rendition you did in the Guitar Bazaar album.
I've always loved this piece. Some music you never expect to hear played on the guitar and this is definitely one. Remarkable.
Nice work Tim.
This is absolutely incredible.

Wow. If you can put it down on paper, I have cash for that. I'd be darned interested in playing, Petrushka at all really. I know it sounds mollifying. I could just use a version of sheet music. C and F# --- C7 b9 #11. I can look for that. Sounds right. Seems like there's a lot of barring in places. Anyway, this is pretty cool. In any event, carry on.
