How incredible the young Voigt was in this music! MY LORD...it's amazing stuff.
How incredibly glorious is Voigt. I saw her do this in the 90s at the Met and remember leaving the house absolutely gobsmacked. Thank you so much for posting.
THE ATMOSPHERE AT THIS PROMS PERFORMANCE OF ELEKTRA AT RAH WAS ELECTRIFYING..IT HAS REMAINED FIRMLY IN MY MEMORY
Actually cried when i saw this, what an awesome sight, huge fan of the proms as well
I saw Zschau in Elektra in her prime in Elektra and it was an electrifying performance on all levels. Her emotional commitment to the role was absolute as it was here. Her voice was really enormous. Listening to recordings of it would bring me to tears. It was a performance that made me not so bitter that I missed the great Nilsson in the role. Debbie was such a magnificent singer at this time in her career. It was one of the most beautiful voices of her generation before her surgery.
Absolutely just one of the most mind blowing and earth shattering things I have ever experienced. I’m not worthy. Honestly just sooooooooo brilliant. ♥️
Back when Deborah Voight was THE dramatic soprano. And my goodness Zhsau is a revelation.
Awesome...it doesn't get any better than 'Elektra'.
Voigt was a superb Strauss soprano. I heard her as Kaiserin in FrOSch in Berlin and it was a constant streaming of beautiful warm sound she created. A singer I felt cosy and secure with right after the first note.
Wow! What a performance! I heard Marilyn sing it in around 1990. Sensational!
Fantastic! I wish I could have been there. When I sang with the Seattle Opera Chorus years ago both Ms. Zschau and Ms. Voigt sang in productions that I was in. They are brilliant musicians and singers, and happen to be very nice as well. Thanks for posting this.
what a fantastic music.....:-))) its breathtaking....thanks for posting viogt is out of the world ...what a beautiful voice this woman has:-))))
Yup, saw it live and I will NEVER forget it. Thanks to whoever for posting it - a truly great memory I can re-live and re-live until the grim reaper demands otherwise.
Strauss is pure genius. I LOVE this opera. Rosenkavalier and Salome too. my opera is all I have
even though her diction doesn´t convince me at all, ms. zschau found a new fan in me :-) brava (and another brava for marvellous debbie)
Both were electrifying !!!!
That gave me goosebumps! Holy cow!

Ana i love this opera i saw it this Spring at the Met w/Nina
And to think that old Stellavox was there! (In the choir stalls sitting above the tymps, facing the great Andrew Davis.) A truly unforgettable experience. Thanks for posting this by the way.
his performance is July of 1991, I believe. Anna Davilla's laugh at her daughter was the MOST chilling I have heard. This performance was CRAZY!
Words fail me.... Thank you very much!
Bravissima la Voigt!
Richard Strauss is the star here........
I am speechless.
Eccezionale la Voigt !
KE MERAVIGLIA!!!!!!!!!! MAI SENTITA UN ORKESTRA COSI SONORA RICCA DI SUONI MAGNIFICI E COLORI! COMPLIMENTI A TUTTI DIRETTORE E CANTANTI!
Ma era eccezionale la Voigt❤
voigt is fantastic als chrysothemis:-)))))) what a beautiful voice:-))))))
Sublime.
Is this the most emotional music ever written?
So beautiful, so good. But unavoidably it looks like an insane version of Streisand and Mrs Bucket (from 'Keeping Up Appearances.' )

Wow, I never knew Barbara Streisand sang 'Elektra'!
This is excellent! I have seen in the theater Nilsson, Jones, Behrens, Polaski - and they were all astonishing. Marilyn Zschau is quite fantastic (although with an uncanny resemblance to Barbra Streisand). I don't know if there is music more intense than Elektra.
I heard Voigt in concert after her surgery ...no note above F#...what a shame
I agree! but this is not the voice Voigt has anymore. Still wonderful, but this beautiful bloom is gone.... I guess nothing lasts forever... But she's glorious here.
the conductor is really cool
Not a good situation when the Chrysothemis out-sings the Elektra.

It doesn´t happen rarely because usually singers who sing Chrysothemis are younger and their voices are not ruined yet like it is the case in some of the Elektras who travel around nowadays ;-)

@@Altonahh10 Also, most importantly, Chrysothemis has had most of the previous 45 minutes to rest and rehydrate. Elektra is pretty much non-stop from her first entrance. Not to take anything away from Ms. Voigt, who sounds stupendous!
@Crystalbellvoice Oh yes. ;)
Elektra is yodeling. Voigt is perfect.

Oddly enough that IS how Elektra is written. It is all mostly in the middle voice in that zone where the sound is anguished and old. The sister is supposed to sound healthy and radiant. Elektra does for it all. It is a death voice.
I see your point, but I think you'll find that PLENTY of great music is still being written! Hey, you think 'Elektra' is overplayed?? What about Carmen, La Traviata, The Magic Flute? THERE'S overplayed.
Incredible voices, but Zschau's diction is a little mushy
Sorry, may be you are not well informed...these singers - or at least Deborah Voight - IS worldwide famous!!
did that just happen,,,,,,,,

WOW, -7, that's a record. I got like -6, when giving my opinion of Christina Aguilera. Is there no new composers that can match this level of composing? Probably, but do you think that Beethoven, Mozart or Bach, were given their dues in their day? not.
Marilyn turnes out to be my Dad's cousin. LOL who knew. =P
😄 They could act witches in a Disney movie 😄
These roles should have been reversed.

Deborah Voigt had an AMAZING voice back then. She held off on singing Elektra because the thought the role was too raw. Unfortunately, when she finally decided years later to sing it, her voice wasn’t up to the challenge anymore. So she decided not to sing it, and said it was one of her big regrets.

Elektra is supposed to sound tired and middle voiced. It is a death role full of rage then it will da down to the death. Zschau was excellent at this and the voice had great regal energy at the upper top. Earlier in the opera perf of this the role is higher here and there. By this point it is a raw release mostly all in the middle voice. Voigt was far to radiant to play her older sister.
Howling and creating walls of sound without intelligible text spread against this excellent orchestra is just NOT excellence. Clearly the ladies are giving their all with commitment, but Strauss demands, and deserves more.
Debbie 6 unfilled promise....all over a little black dress ...
Zschau ...... no, no, no!
De acuerdo con el Excelente a Voight. El resto, una solemne tontería.
There's no need for that. Stick to your heavy metal, Mr. Headbangin'.
Now, I'm competing with HEADBANGING69 for most thumbs down. Here is goes: Hey! What is Sesame Street's Big Bird and Miss Piggy doing here singing Strauss' Elektra? Fans, bring them thumbs down in!!!

I'm afraid you overestimated the interest that people would take in your posting. Cue the sad trombone.
The best performance as elektra comes from Gabriele Schnaut and the second best is, Birgit Nilsson

I saw gwyneth jones and hildegard behrens too. Both great.
"Hey! What is Sesame Street's Big Bird and Miss Piggy doing here singing Strauss' Elektra?" Way to make me feel absolutely evil for totally laughing my ass off. It's actually a pretty decent performance, though.
can you imagine if this beautiful voices and Orchestra were directed to the LORD, I truly regret
you don`t understand one word. horrible singing of m.zschau.
Ms. Zschau was unknown to me, but it doesn't mind. She's just a terrible singer. Her singing technique is absolutely defective, her voice ugly, her diction inexistant, no one can understand a word... Besides her, Voigt seems the best soprano in the world, though she's just average. Perfectly forgettable.

@@rlaclark I couldn't agree more; I had the distinct displeasure of seeing her perform the entire role--a travesty. I had the fortune to see Borkh sing it twice and Ms Zschau simply yells the notes
