I used this mini-series for this because I watched it and I really really liked it. Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter (Our mothers, our fathers) is a 3 episodes German mini-series set in World War II. It tells the story of 5 friends, which promise to meet again at the end of the war.

"Berlin, 1941. Five friends eager to become heroes in an adventure that will change the face of Europe - and that will forever change them as well. Level-headed, highly decorated officer Wilhelm is off to the eastern front with his younger brother Friedhelm, a sensitive dreamer more interested in literature than warfare. Deeply in love with Wilhelm is Charlotte, a young nurse who looks forward to serving in the Wehrmacht, also on the eastern front. While Greta is a talented singer who longs to become another Marlene Dietrich, her Jewish boyfriend Viktor still cannot convince his parents to leave Germany... Valor and courage come to the fore, but also betrayal - of values, beliefs, humanity. Friedhelm turns into a soulless killing machine... Wilhelm deserts his troops and is court-martialed... Charlotte's Nazi ideology crumbles when she betrays a Jewish nurse helping the German army... Greta obtains papers for Viktor's escape by selling herself to an SS colonel. They and millions of others wanted to be heroes; but none of them could imagine what the war would ultimately do to them and to the rest of the world."

Watched this on BBC 2 and I loved it! Showed the war from the German perspective and showed that they were fighting the same war as the British and the Russians. They were just serving their country. Most of these men weren't even nazis they were just part of the German Army.

Hasen Pfeffer As an American I would say 2/3s of us do not understand this. I would say a larger percent of more educated individuals yes.. of course they understand it but.. most of the world population even if they went through school are idiots and often just narrow minded fools.

Das ist echt der beste Film bzw. Serie vom 2.WK den ich je gesehen habe. Man sieht dort die knallharte grausame Realität vom Krieg. Das ist irgendwie mal was anderes als bei anderen Filmen, immer mit Helden und Happy End.

absolutely brilliant ....at last a film that shows the war from the german perspective in a totally honest ,realistic way ....a change from the usual gung ho histrionics of american and british fims.

I didn't mean with my statement to make an issue of historical problems as Hitler vs Stalin, fascism vs communist and so on. I dislike american movies because they often overflow with a treacherous rhetoric according to which Americans are ever the best people in the world and U.S.A. the only country which fights for freedom. IMHO, in the reality you can't find this sort of simplistic Manichaeism in which good and evil fight each other. On the other hand, movies like "U.M., U.V." are just more honest and objective. That's why i like this movie.

Thank you for your deep brief explanation, uploader. I love this song and this movie, both are the great stuff.
And honestly, there are so many movies out there that portray the Germans as purely evil (Indiana Jones, anyone?) that its actually getting quite old. Life isn't quite as simple as 'good guys versus bad guys' and the sooner people realize that the better.

(...) atrocities, and are faced with the guilt of it at the end, in such it ruins their lives. But they are not good, nor are they bad. They are simply people. The German people in WWII were simply people, faced with choices, and based on what they believed was right or wrong, they chose their actions. I honestly don't believe these characters were depicted as "pure honorable heroes", you're right about them being victims of a war. War changes people, it reveals them, it dehumanizes them, (...)

and everyone it touches is a victim. I apologize if this is offensive, but I believe the old idea of "Axis Bad, Allies Good" is outdated and oversimplified. Yes, some Germans did horrible, horrible, awful deeds that should never be forgotten. But its is a gross mistake to say that everyone was like that, that most people were like that.

In AK there were also Jewish soldiers, and even Jewish commanders. Polish people saved very many Jews from holocaust - google: "Gerechter unter den Völkern", "Żegota", "Witold Pilecki", "Jan Karski"... I have many examples...

It's a german miniseries called "Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter - HD " (Our mothers, our fathers) but it was translated to english as "Generation War"

+astridbelge : I haven't been able to find the entire series on YT. I believe it's available on Netflix and on DVD. From what I've seen on YT, it looks like an excellent series.

You cant make war without war crimes and you have to be cold blooded to make war. You had to sell your soul as high as you could! Germans should be honored as much as other soldiers! i am Estonian!

just because there aren't any physical mountains doesn't mean it's out of context. As a matter of fact this song fits perfectly with the Mini-series. If you watched all of it then you would know that. (if you have watched it in it's entirety then i apologize for assuming you haven't)

The 5 protagonists represent only 5 % of the Germans at that time. All proportions are distorted and the producers use emotional blackmail - they ask the viewers: Did you like the 5 protagonists? Yes? Ok, then accept our twisted version of history. The film doesn't show that the Germans went to war because they loved, trusted and blindly followed Hitler. And it is also not by chance that the war starts in it in 1941 + the Polish Home Army (AK) is portrayed as a bunch of cold antisemitic beasts.
are you sure that you mean "on Polish land"? are you sure that Soviets killed more Poles and Polish Jews than Germans from Nazi Germany? Please give me historical source prooving it.
For making this movie we have to visit Berlin once more. On tanks, without visa like before
