STRATEGIES TO REDUCE BRAIN FOG: Breast Cancer & Mental Health

Brain fog is a very common side effect during and after Breast Cancer Treatment. Previously known as 'chemo brain', Brain Fog is getting a lot more attention, particularly in relation to the impact on quality of life for Breast Cancer Survivors.
In this video Breast Cancer Counsellor Julie Bolton and I sit down to discuss what is Brain Fog, how it can impact areas of your life during and after Breast Cancer Treatment, and simple strategies you can implement to combat the effect of Brain Fog.

Thank you so much for this video. It explains so much of what I’ve been going through and all your points are exactly right. The brain fog, the worry about not being able to do your job properly. You’re so busy going to doctors appointments and different procedures and then you get behind on your work. And you’re working late at night trying to get everything done, you don’t even have time to exercise or have any fun. This cancer is quite a marathon, and not a good one I would say. I am going to have my oncologist watch this along with my breast cancer surgeon. Thank you thank you so much! It might be helpful to give suggestions on what works for different people to manage. I find that I have to use my calendar on my iPad to keep track of all my appointments. And I write everything down as far as directions to appointments go, I look up everything ahead of time. And I leave myself notes so I don’t forget things. At work I try to get ahead on my work and I’ll do things ahead of time that I know will be needed during my time of recuperation from surgery and chemo or what not. That way they’re already done. I just leave instructions for the person handling it when you’re gone.

Brain fog, so many things coming at once and not knowing which to focus on first. Especially during the journey while still working full time.

Thank you for this video! My brain fog hit just after my 3rd chemo infusion a couple weeks ago. My mom has been having this issue (she was in chemo treatment 5yrs ago, with tamoxifen follow up), I'll be forwarding this to her as well. ❤

Thanks for your video suggestion. I am just in the process of organizing a video on how to combat hot flushes with a wonderful Breast Care Nurse. This will be the first video of hopefully many on how to combat side effects of Aromatase inhibitors and Tamoxifen. Jen

Each time I underwent a surgery with general anaesthesia, I had brain fog after a weeks of the surgery. I struggled to find the right words, names and other cognitive issues. It slowly went away and I feel much better. Yes, I did worry about early onset of Alzheimer's during the fog. Thankfully this video makes me feel better.

Most likely not you Nancy, most likely brain fog or possibly general fatigue post treatment. Have you spoken to your Doctor about your symptoms? Julie Bolton has online courses now I believe if you're interested in accessing them. Jen
