Acting coach Anthony Montes takes you through one of the main Lee Strasberg exercises (method acting) on relaxation and emotional preparation, that was taught at the Actors Studio.
This is an exercise you can do at home, on your own or with friends, as if your room were the classroom.
It will take you in a deep hypnotic state that you can learn to recreate on your own before an audition or casting, or before jumping on set or on stage. Practicing it regularly will allow you to get there much quicker on your own, without to do it for 45 minutes. You can also practice it daily, like a meditation.
Anthony Montes is an award winning actor, writer and producer. He is also an acting coach who studied Sanford Meisner's acting technique (at Playhouse West) and the Strasberg Method (at the Actors Studio).
Among his teachers were Sandy Meisner, Charlie Laughton (Al Pacino's friend and coach), Bill Alderson, Susan Peretz, Barbara Bain, Bob Carnegie and Shelley Winters. He has been teaching in many places around the world, including James Franco's Studio 4 in the recent years.

WHO AM I
🤓 I'm Octave, a former cognitive science student and musician living in Paris. I got back into acting to improve my stage performance when I was singing at Open Mics, and ended up creating an acting school around my research (Paris Meisner Studio). I also studied different approaches of therapy and coaching, especially NLP and ericksonian hypnosis in which I am fully certified, and now in a long Gestalt therapy training. I got into film production firstly to document the work we were doing at the school and to produce students scenes. I have now just produced and co-directed our first short movie which will be out in the summer 2022. I do photography as a hobby and to practice composition and colour correction.
PARIS MEISNER STUDIO
🏫 This is our acting school & research center in Paris. I developed it over the years, at first in order to train for free, and fly acting teachers (Meisner technique in particular) from all over the world to bring quality training where we were. It now hosts an original research program called "Meisner & systemic coaching" that mixes Meisner approaches and other acting techniques with tools from therapy, coaching, meditation, and scriptwriting and production principles.

This exercise was unlike any meditation, yoga or memory retrieval method I have ever encountered. I went back to a time of joy and happiness that I never thought I could completely remember. It actually started off as a feeling of joy but then I started to feel sadness partly because those memory are so far gone and there will probably never be another moment quite like it. I even started tearing up half way through the exercise, I truly felt like I somehow time traveled back to the past and I don't know about you but I had a hard time opening my eyes and saying bye to everyone. It's truly remarkable what the human brain is capable of. Thank you for this and good luck to all of you in your endeavors. One love

I felt the same way and it makes me alive and see the things and persons that matters most in my childhood days and now due to dream race, I didn't talk to them from a long time. I understand that I am not as emotional as I used to be. This practice is just extraordinary.

21:49 ends physical relaxation/ 24:24 Ends mental/internal relaxation/ 30: 55 Sonic recall (of the moment you have chosen) ends./ 34:40 Recovering the smells of the chosen moment ends./ 37: 15 Finishes the part wherein you add the taste to the previous two senses/ 40:18 Completion of the part wherein you add the sense of touch to your exploration/ 43:50 Finishes the part wherein you added the sense of sight to your memory recovery path / In the remaining minutes you open your eyes and explore the space as if you were living in the time and space of the memory you have recovered. Then you close your eyes and abandon the memory. You say goodbye to that younger version of you. Once you've done it, you open your eyes again and it's over.

My strongest sense was smell, sight, and sound, and everything...even when I opened my eyes I could still see my childhood...I cried throughout this exercise because I remembered things I never thought of, you're correct by saying Strasberg said our memories are stored somewhere in the warehouse. I saw my loved ones who have passed on. This exercise is really strong!! Thank You for this emotional preparation

I went back to the moment in my memory, everything felt extremely vivid. I remember things that I've forgotten, especially the small details. Things that were said, and the emotion overwhelmed me. The moment I opened my eyes I still could feel myself present in the past. This is a powerful technique. I will practice this every day, each time with a different memory that presesnts a different emotion. All i can say is wow 👏

Sight and touch were the strongest for me, as I delved deeper into nostalgia, I actually started tearing up as I told my old self “don’t give up! You’re destined to be great, don’t let anyone put you down!” This was powerful for me.

When I went back to my 18th birthday, lonely and mundane as it was, I realized that I hadn't really let go of my past. My parents recently sold our home and only when I was brought to this day I realized that I will never ever be there again. The music I was making was so good and I was ready to put it out to the world. Chatting with other musicians on those videos chat sites, we would cypher. Anyways, that was therapeutic and enlightening. I usually forget things pretty easily and have trained myself to have a poor memory, due to trauma or whatever, but maybe I should tone that down and practice remembering before I forget forever. At least that's a feeling I had during the exercise. Randomly clicked on this and glad I did, thank you

Throughout the warm up stretching the body I started to cry, which just made me realise how much tension I'm holding on a daily basis and how it's locked in with my physicality. Sight and touch were the strongest senses I could connect back with. When I opened my eyes at the 48min mark I genuinely felt like I was 9 years younger, carrying the tension and excitement I believe I would have had that day, even though I could see the room I was in presently I didn't get pulled out of the emotional moment I was in. This really surprised me, thank you for sharing this video.

This relaxation was a mix of tingles and sadness for me. The strongest sense was the sound. I was quite overwhelmed going back there, especially when we were supposed to find our reflection somewhere. That is why I especially liked the"say goodbye to that younger version of yourself". I kept all of the experience when I opened my eyes, but the strongest part then was the vision. I WAS in that room right now. :) Thank you Anthony! :)

This was the most helpful video I've found! It was a great and emotional experience. It was very hard to relax, but I got there. I was full of joy and relief as I went back to one of the most carefree moments of my life. I remembered the warmth of the room. The music coming from the tv. The smell along with the feeling of anticipation for what I knew was coming as an 8-year-old girl made me feel so good. When he made us go back to say goodbye, I began to cry because I didn't want to go. I wanted to stay there. I will continue to use this video to practice emotional prep. Thank you!

This was a truly amazing exercise. I had never thought of combining meditation and performance. My experience was a moment I thought of at the moment that stuck with me. The main sense was sight for me, it was absolutely fantastic to see a younger me, younger parents, younger older brother. It was almost a resolution to the experience. Though I was sad at the time, I realized I probably shouldn't have been as sad as had thought. It was even better to get rid of that memory. Watching the scenery fall and as the world turned gray, talked to myself and let me go. Once again, thank you. It's truly been a revelation!

Thank you, thank you. I really needed a voice to guide me. I will do it everyday. Thank you very much.

I went to Valentine’s Day when I was 16 with my best friend josh who passed away 3 years ago. We were both single and very restaurant near us needed a reservation so we went to a McDonald’s and orders $60 worth of chicken nuggets burgers and fries. I saw him with his usual haircut, and his fake leather jacket, I saw me 40lb lighter with a long ponytail, wearing my old tight button downs with rolled up sleeves and my old fancy jacket. I saw 60 chicken nuggets and two large double quarter ponder meals plain with blue power aid, and the waitress asking us how the hell we expected to eat it all, we responded “with our mouths”, we dug in talking about the future, our families, assassins creed, religion, psychedelics, how to survive the zombie apocalypse. It was so nice I starered crying (I’m a very sentimental person). I did taste the food though, and feel the cold air table and chair, smell the kitchen. Saying good by was super satisfying in a weird way, getting to talk to young me and my old friend. Feeling some new resolve. It was nice

I’ve been struggling to access tears in scenes recently. I’ve been quite “abusive” with my memory recall to force emotion. I’ve dried up emotional wells of fabricated awful events happening to my loved ones to squeeze out tears for the camera. …I chose a happy memory here, and I smiled and laughed in the dark by myself in my room reliving this happy memory. I still know and speak to everyone in that memory….yet, when I was told to “let it go”, the loss I felt is still with me. Hugging friends and loved ones goodbye, and saying goodbye to my past self….I don’t know. I hope this video helps so many others. I’m going to keep working on using this in the future. Thank you so much! ❤

Perhaps because I hardly think about things in past, good or bad, everything becomes quite overwhelming. Joy and sadness all get muddled up. The smallest details get to me more than the general picture, like sand grains stuck to my skin. But as the picture grows i get a sense of awe and emotions start to well up. The strongest sense for me was touch.

I loved how many vivid details it brought up, but hated how I wasn’t able to let go of what is presently bothering me during the exercise, and that kept taking me out of focus. I think it has something to do with when you tell yourself not to think about something, which makes that impossible. I know the relaxation and sensory exercise requires consistent practice, but I felt frustrated at myself that I couldn’t focus 100%. I’ll keep coming back though, and I really appreciate being able to use the voice guide through this class recording. :) Thanks for sharing it!

Ok I'm not sure what's wrong with me but I cried when we started doing the relaxation technique. I have a lot of physical pain in my body currently. I did feel a lot of tension release. I almost fell asleep or went in to a trance forgetting what I was doing all together. I enjoyed thinking about the memory and I cried again when I had to say goodbye. I didn't want to say goodbye. I wanted to stay there longer. Right now I'm balling my eyes out even while writing this. It was such a happy memory of my dog, bird and grandparents but now all of them are gone. (Passed away) Maybe it's just that it reminded me how much I miss them but I ended up sad in the end not happy so I'm not sure if I was supposed to bring forth happiness but it had a counter effect because now I'm extremely sad...

that was absolutely the best thing that could have happened. "Release"...and it may lead to crying. i've had it happen to me when i got to relaxing my neck. i've always had a sensitivity regarding my neck. have a congenital problem with a disc. this crying jag happened in class over 30 years ago. i just saw a psychic last fall and she told me i had been hung in a past life. whaaa??? maybe this explains it. i hope you are feeling better..the more you release...whatever it is..as he says..."let it go"...the better for you. all the best

I am sorry but this exercise caused me distress instead of relaxation, by the time I opened my eyes, they were wet. I thought of a memory of my childhood when I was 7 or probably 9, a pleasant memory. It's around 2 PM or 1 PM in the afternoon, the golden sun rays shining down the kitchen as we have an open area above our kitchen, I can see my mother cooking lunch for our family, I can hear the whistle of the pressure cooker and laughs of my younger brother, when we used to be close, playing together. I can see my father coming home from work, me and my younger brother happy to see him and loudly calling him, "Papa! Papa!" while running into his arms to greet him. I was able to smell his clothes and and I felt at ease but this didn't last long, those words "Papa! Papa!" got stuck and Ii kept hearing them and they transported me into bad memories with my dad, of how he used to abuse me and beat me over things like making cartoons or getting scolded if I scored 18 out of 20 in my tests, while my younger brother, who used to get failed in exams was always loved and cared for, I was scolded over every petty thing, as petty as if i didn't zip my jacket. When Anthony said, "See your younger self", I could see myself in the mirror combing my hair trying to make a spike hairstyle and my brother and father laughing at it, bullying me saying how stupid I look, then my memory shifted to getting beaten by him with sandals till I pissed my pants and didn't telling mom why I pissed in them. Then it shifted to the days when he was being good to me before the days of his death and how I was wondering "Why is he being nice to me", like I was so confused seeing him being nice to me that I thought it's something bad. My father died when I was 12 years old, I don't know why I remembered the memory of me hugging him on a sunny afternoon, and when the session came to an end and Anthony said, "let go of your younger self, let go of this memory", my eyes got wet, I didn't want to let it go I don't know why but I could feel my breath breaking before opening my eyes and I didn't feel so good.

I wonder if you still read the comments…I have been training on and off with The Method for the last year and I struggle to release tension that is in my gut. The relaxation exercise doesn’t help me with that part. I hold a lot of emotion there and I wonder if you recommend anything to help with that. During the exercise I struggled to use the senses in the order that you state. I was hearing the scene but still seeing it, but I feel that when you said to see it then I saw it much more clearly. I could still see it in my minds eye when I opened my eyes; the people I was talking to, my hand on my partners leg, the plate on my lap, the taste of the food and smell of the wine. I struggled to feel strongly, but did go from feeling anxious to calmer/more relaxed. On the real occasion I’d had a bad day and then was very shocked by my surprise birthday party. I didn’t feel the shock but felt relief when I sat down to talk with friends. Thank you, I loved this video and will be coming back to it again and again.

sight and sound where the strongest for me. I remembered a friend who i've totally forgot about until now and remembered her smile. I became sad, but nothing close to being devastated, but then tears where streaming down my face. I wasn't actively crying and I didn't experience a warm rush to my eyes like i do when I usually cry, they just started coming out. I yawned a few times it that might have been it, but it's not like I always "cry" when i yawn. I don't quite know what to call what I experienced. When I opened my eyes, i was still feeling the essence of the room I was in, but i felt the need to visually project my imaginary room on top of the room i was in. I felt myself pushing and actively forcing myself to see things that weren't there and the feeling quickly dissipated. My question is: do you release the imaginary world once you open your eye's? I assume that it should just be there but to what degree? Also thank you, I had a tremendously beautiful experience : )

Thank you for sharing your experience. At first in that exercise you try to make a link when you open your eyes briefly, to condition your brain to keep some of what you've experienced eyes closed just before. The more you do it the more naturall it will become. Then it will all depends of the needs of the scene. There are specific imagination exercises that you can practice, that are much shorter and eyes opened for the whole time, that you would use preferably when working with green screens and props, in order to react to things that are not actually there, as genuinely as possible. Here it is mainly about staying affected a bit more by what you've just experienced. Emotional preparation for a scene should not be "pushed" ever, especially after the scene starts. From there you let go of the preparation and work off of your partner and the imaginary circumstances of the scene.

As we went through all 5 senses it began to feel more real. My eyes watered a little and at one point I began to smile and feel quite happy, plus I could recall emotions I felt during that time. Almost my thoughts at the time too. Is this how you would immerse yourself into a character shoes that you were playing?

This exercise is just to relax and emotionally prepare for a scene. It would depend what approach or "technique" you're using but usually emotional preparation comes just before the scene so you don't enter empty, or so you can have a particular emotional state in one take, for a film for example. From then you drop the preparation, let it go and just pay attention to your partner and live "truthfully in the imaginary circumstances" of the scene, like Sanford Meisner says. For him also, "character" would only be "how you do your doing", whatever it is you're doing in the scene. The propos and clothes and framing and editing after will also modify the audience's perception of the "character", but those are not the actor's concern whilst he's performing

This video is very irresponsible. Lee Strasberg had his students practice sense-memory for TWO YEARS before he allowed anyone to do what is being guided here. Mr. Montes, please remove this video. Yes, some are having a wonderful experience but others may possibly not be ready for this and you may be leading them down a very personally dangerous path.
