    Max's story arc was a great metaphor for someone struggling with depression. You can be surrounded by a hundred people, have the support of friends and loved ones but its sometimes not enough to help you with what is happening in your mind. That scene of her coming close to succumbing to all the pain but finding strength in all the good that was always present but obscured; that is something people with depression deal with everyday. It really can feel like an uphill battle to make it from one day to the next. Be kind to each other because we are all fighting epic battles of survival.

    @joeyclemenza7339

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@3pm479 the explanation I came away with was “pain and despair;” or more importantly… hope and a reason to keep going. The monster (I won’t say what it’s real name is) feeds off of a lot, but in particular these two things. It’s particularly fond of those who have suffered traumatically in the past. Those who may be operating with zero hope and faith. Max escapes because the Kate Bush song essentially gives her reason to have faith again. It gives her hope. These are two things that work against her despair and lack of hope for the world. It reminds her that she can still overcome this trauma. This also works part and parcel with the subject matter of the song, Kate Bush gives her hope beyond the pain she felt, witnessing Billy’s death and never getting that chance to say goodbye. That’s really what ALL of the monster’s victims needed… just a little hope in a dark work world. Something to keep going. Sadly for the three of them… they all gave up and submitted. Max never gave up. That’s not to say the monster will keep going for her, but that song keeps her strong and moving past her pain.

  • @HeyImPissed

    I think what made this scene so powerful, was the fact that all the people Vecna targeted had problems in their lives, whether it was abuse, depression or PTSD. Vecna represents all the demons they have to fight inside but eventually let it win and give up, however in Max’s case she had gone through pain losing billy, abuse from her step father, dealing with alcoholic mother and worse shutting out her friends. However was able to fight the demons she had inside and run back up the hill to the light in her life. This scene in my opinion is telling everyone who struggles with these things to never give up and let your demons win, cause life is precious.

    There's a reason it's become a trope. Friends can be there in your darkest times, whenever you need them, whether you want them or not. They can be someone to listen to you, someone to talk to, someone with a shoulder to cry on. Dear Billy, I don’t know if you can even hear this. Two years ago, I would have said ‘That’s ridiculous, impossible. But that was before I found out about alternation dimensions and monsters, so… I’m just going to stop assuming that I know anything. So much has happened since you left. Your dad was a total mess. He and my mom started getting into fights. Bad fights. I don’t think he could stand being here without you. So he left. And he didn’t leave Mom much. She’s taken an extra job, and we moved to that lovely trailer park off Kerley. Basically, ever since you left, everything’s been a total disaster. And the worst part is, I can’t tell anyone why you’re gone. I can’t tell them that you saved El’s life. That you saved my life. I play that moment back in my head all the time. And sometimes I imagine myself running to you, pulling you away. I imagine that if I had, that you would still be here. And everything would be right again. I imagine that we could’ve become friends. Good friends, like a real brother and sister. And I know that’s stupid. You hated me. I hated you. But I thought that maybe we could try again. But that’s not what happened. I just stood there and I watched. For a while, I tried to be happy. Normal. But I think that maybe a part of me died that day too. And I haven’t told anyone this. I just can’t. But I had to tell you. Before it’s too late. If you can even hear this. I really hope that you can. I’m sorry. I’m so, so sorry, Billy. Love, your shitty little sister, Max

  • @eduardomarin2453
    @eduardomarin24532 жыл бұрын

    This scene, in my opinion, represents the real essence of ST. A beautiful and harsh allegory of childhood and all events which makes us transform towards adult life. As children, we are scared of the monsters of the outer world, whereas when we start to grow other monsters show up, the monsters inside us. Those which block our development and for sure the most difficult to face. While the Demogorgon symbolized those monsters from the other world, Vecna represents the monsters inside. The one which feeds from our insecurity, the guilt, the depression…most of them from childhood traumas and events. The 4 season, again, in my opinion, represents this stage in life. The one in which if you are strong enough, you will succeed, while if you don’t, you will become a lost soul throughout your life.

    @Mallory Eilleen..........Well said. I agree with you completely. Not only is it the best scene ever on Netflix, I think it is one of the best scenes in history on any platform. There may have been lots of emotional scenes in the past, but never one where the music married so perfectly with what's being seen on the screen. When the producers chose Kate Bush's song, they jumped from a good scene to an iconic scene just that quickly. You add that to all the personal issues Max was dealing with how unfair it would be for her to die, it swells our emotions. A beautiful song can bring out feelings, I'm sure millions of other people across the country were also "ugly crying."......lol

    This comment is probably never going to be seen but fuck it This music alone already made a perfect scene even more beautiful when it comes to depression in TV it’s always a mixed bag for me sometimes it’s handled good and others it’s handled terribly but Stranger Things made Max depression feel so real to the point I was sad when she was pulled in the upside down because I honestly thought she was going to die and I was so fucking glad to the point I jumped out my seat out of pure happiness. And this also points in a direction that music can help people in tough spots (in Stranger Things it seems to literally mean that lol) like how you can have a rough day sometimes just putting on some music can make it a bit better idk just how I felt through this scene either way it’s a perfect moment in a great show

    She was ready to leave, got all her affairs in order, handed out those letters and had that phenomenal goodbye scene at Billy's headstone. In the end, she chose life. If you ever find yourself running up that hill, there's no guarantee that you'll be as strong as Max. All you can do is try, and it doesn't have to be your best try, you can half-ass the try, it doesn't matter. Even the smallest try is good enough.

    This episode was the first piece of media in recent years to successfully convince me of a death fake-out. The whole time I was like “Ain’t no way she dies here, she’s part of the main cast they can’t kill her off” then when it changes to her running, the environment decimating around her, the memory flashbacks, I genuinely started to worry that this was the end for Max, that she would die just before making it out, and the massive wave of relief I felt when she actually did survive. Props to you Duffer Brothers for the ending that is EP 4

    I think the writer of this song wants to swap places with them because maybe she deeply loves the person she's talking about and they have changed a lot lately and have been unconsciously hurting her. "You don't wanna hurt me, but see how deep the bullet lies" She wants to understand why they're doing what they're doing, because it's impossible to believe that they would ever really try hurt her or make her feel like that. I also think that a part of her even wants them to see how she's been hurt as a result too and she wants them to see from her perspective. Overall, to me it's about a complicated and messy relationship, which seems to be a result of not talking things through or understanding each other's problems. Maybe it's just the way I see it, maybe it can be interpreted in different ways but idk

    @@ikeepscreamingbutgodwontan3132 I think your explanation is still accurate, but Kate actually said she wrote it about men vs women and how we can never really understand each other because we absolutely cannot live like the other. If we could strike a deal with God and switch places, though, we'd reach a new level of harmony. I think your interpretation is just as on point, though. It doesn't have to have one interpretation. That's what makes art great. Ultimately the song is about empathy, and empathy applies to so many different situations.

Max's battle with depression over her brothers death mixing with song about swapping places because she blames herself, wanting to give in to vecna but seeing just how much her friends care giving her the strength to fight that urge, the whole theme of growing up and the the types of monsters we face going from childish monster under our beds to actual inner demons, holy shit this scenes amazing. The amount of people who don't seem to understand that the way the song is being used is about her wishing she had died instead of Billy and wanting to "Make a deal with God" to swap places is sort of surprising. If I had to guess, the hopeful tone of the song has people grabbing onto the more positive interpretation. The reason it's positive though is because it's about accepting your trauma, your guilt. She still wishes she could have swapped places with him, but realizes that it's not worth dwelling on because it hurts those still in her life and isn't something she can change. You can't just make feelings of guilt, shame, or regret magically go away, but you can reframe the way that you view and handle those feelings in the future. In my opinion, that is what was intended to be hopeful about this scene. P.S. It is also mirroring the emotional situation Hopper is going through. He was feeling down on himself, lacking value but began to accept what had occurred before and reframed it so that he could regain his motivation to continue on.

For me, it was not about Billy at all & more about her battling the demon of her depression & when faced with death, how she found her will to live. I found the scene so poignant, the way she fought her way back to the pleading voices of those who loved her. This Episode sends a beautiful message to its viewers and that message anchors on our struggles in this thing called life. We are all humans living different lives dealing with different struggles. Wether it be depression, PTSD, a low self esteem or a death in the family. We all are fighting our own demons and half of us are on the brink of giving up. But like Max we need to understand that this thing called life.. is precious. And if we give up and let these demons win we don’t only let ourselves down but we let the people rooting for us to win down as well. So anybody watching this. Hear me when I say keep going. Keep running up that road. Keep running up that Hill. It’s not gonna be easy but.. it will be worth it in the end. Because in the end you understand the value of life. I love all of you and have a blessed day.

    It's remarkable to see the amount of people drawn to this scene, music, the emotion it conveys throughout. It's telling that we're all struggling in some form, be it depression, anxiety, past events in our lives that weigh us down to the point of near collapse. Max pushed everyone away, took on the weight of her regrets alone, nearly drowning her until realizing she wanted to live and let the people in her life that she loved be there for her. I love that music was the only thing able to pierce the curse, as I know that many can relate, in dark times it's sometimes the only thing that can keep your head above water. Powerful scene, the buildup to it and execution was extremely well done, instant emotional pull, and the acting was spot on.

    No doubt about that! The "memories" montage with the song playing while she tries to escape - damn. So well done. I liked when the song played the first time and we saw her in her "own world" with everyone else "doing their stuff" at the high school - she clearly wasn't well after what happened and that scene showed that. But then the ep.4's ending... Amazing!

This orchestral version is just perfect. I hope Max will wake up from her coma and recover. I love her, she deserves a happy ending. For other people (like me) there was no good memories in the past, but there was the potential of best moments in the future, the hope of a better life. This scene and music hits on a whole new level if you've lost someone and blame yourself that you're gone. Idk why one day dad and I were upstairs just organizing stuff. You know how you get random stupid thoughts in your head that you just brush off cause they're stupid. I just looked at him as he was talking to me and my brain goes 'he has cancer'. Thought pressed a bit and I'm like Lin come on thats stupid. Didn't say anything. Little over a year later. Stage 4 cancer and he's given 2-3 months to live. He was diagnosed Sept 2012 and made it until July 2013. Everyday I wake up thinking if I had just said that nagging little thought outloud it would have made a difference and I blame myself everyday.
