The original show bible explicitly described him as having sexual identity issues, and the script for the snowball scene said he was staring at Mike, and not the girl he was dancing with. Honestly, whether they actually go with that storyline in the 4th season or not, it's clear that they meant for him to be gay from the very beginning.
