Strange Noises | 954 | Engine

Not sure what this sound is... you can hear the echo of it better than the sound.. but still. Can anyone identify this? Sounds like it is coming from the back side around the TBs..

I guess the best is to use a mechanic stethoscope around the engine to narrow down where exactly the sound is coming from

Hey man, I saw your post on fireblades.org. To me this sounds like a miss fire. I would suggest taking the top part of the air box off and listen to her while it's running. I would hope it is a bad spark plug or coil. Also, good to know you have a channel. Subbed mate. ELECTRICJELLY.

+Nicholas Thomson cheers bud. Definitely not a misfire.... Or most likely not. All pipes nice and hot, new plugs, good power. I pull, check, and clean the plugs every 5-6k miles (every other oil change). Last checked 1500 miles ago all nice and even worn and even looked good for fueling.

I have 2 954rr’s. These engines are noisey as hell but this does sound irregular to me.

My 954 makes all kinds of random knocks, noises, etc. I have this same sounds, it's piston slap for sure. It'll be alright.

Short skirts... great on girls... not so great for an engine >=] I get mine almost solely at startup (for now at least) and with the clutch out.. pull the clutch in it goes away. Same for you?

@@TheRealRRDemon for the most part.. Ive been chasing a knock on fast decelt for 3 months now and have just decided to call it a day and live with it. But yeah the initial knock if until around 20 or seconds.

Between these two knocks I've put around 4k miles on it. It definitely could not be a bearing, it would have grenaded by now

Stoney Lawson only 1k here, I just let it warm up rev it up a little and the sound goes away. It’s just the age of the bike I think.

Did you ever figure out what was making the noise? My 954 makes a clunk noise here and there when warming up. After the bike is warmed up it never comes back. My engine does get warm very quickly. I’d say it takes 3-4 minutes and it’s already at 160 degrees. Once it gets to 188 degrees then it starts going up slowly. I’m thinking it’s the servo since the fi light is on for it. I don’t think it was ever working. I have tried looking at the servo when the bike is warming up but I don’t see anything move. Also I can turn the servo but it’s pretty tough to do since the cables doesn’t have any lubricant.

Never mind the temp comment. I just tried this morning and it took 10 seconds for it to reach 126 degrees then slowly started climbing. It’s also 70 degrees this morning. I didn’t here anything this time.

Usually piston slap. The short skirts on the pistons seem to cause this when the 54s get some mileage on them. It will likely come and go for a while, then progressively it will begin to persist.

The Real RRDemon I figured it out on my bike. It was the servo motor the entire time. If turn it to the right it runs fine. If i turn it to the left it starts choking the exhaust which causes the knock. My knock was twice as loud as yours. It sounded like you’re banging on a pot.

+Jarrod Hudson manual cct adjusted, plugs changed about 3k miles ago, oil always changed 2,500-3,000 miles. I fear it may be a rod bearing.... or just piston slap. The short skirt on these bikes are a point of frustration!

The Real RRDemon you arent kidding when I was trying to mount in the angel eye system for the headlights my hands kept cramping up trying to get up into them to figure out where to mount the ballast... That sound still worries me though because it is the exact same one Lucille used to have maybe I just masked it or somehow Jimmied something to stop it, but if it's more sinister she's not going to forgive me. Hmm time to do some sleuthing. I'll message you on facebook if I find anything concrete.

It is an odd ticking or even very light knocking. I guess the only real way to know what it is would be to dig in.. but that also takes her out of commission until I get her back together. Going to start by just pulling the valve cover back off and checking the middle/left side. Cam wear, out-of-spec shims (just did clearances though), backed-out cam-holder bolt... hard to say what I might find....

The Real RRDemon yeah I know what you mean. Does yours do like mine did? Noise slightly goes away when you idle up higher? Can you feel the "tick" on the gas tank when you first start it? I noticed it kinda of gets better when it warms up, but it never goes away. I did slightly over fill mine with oil. It'll probably rear back up here soon though. Piston slap is what really worries me.

+Jarrod Hudson almost opposite.. not there or too quiet to hear at start but when she gets up to temp it appears. I don't usually notice it above 20mph, but it can be heard below that

Did you find out what the noise was? I have a bit of knocking going on too from lower engine. I also have valve noise but this is distinctly different. Not clutch basket either. More of a piston slap. I am going to change the cct and do valve adjustment hoping will solve noise but I am concerned about connecting rod issues that some 954 owners have had. Bike has 60k miles on it. Knocking noise is loudest after warmed up and at idle with clutch pulled in or not. Don't hear it while I'm riding though. Bike goes well no performance issues.

954s have very short piston skirts... does great for weight.. not so great for longevity. They are known for getting a bit of slap as they get up there in miles. But I think, like mine, it is generally when cold.. I'm honestly not sure about what would cause it hot

Oh, to answer your question, I never dug into the motor. I wasn't sure if I would have her much longer and was not about to invest the time/ money. Side note- keeping her and now have to dig in. Went for my first ride since Feb yesterday... it was magnificent even for a "boring" ride

No... still pretty much the same exact sound so I haven't dug in just yet. I figured I would monitor it for a bit unless I had cause to tear into the engine again. Seems she'll make it to the next valve check before I really get to investigate.

  • @TheRealRRDemon

+licht iff I can just about promise the cylinders are scored. It is a common 954 thing, though always on the exhaust side not the intake side so much. This sounds like it is on the intake side... but I know it will reverb through the walls. I'll have to borescope to get any idea off the dmg extent/scoring.

Could be piston slap. The short skirts on the 954 pistons lead to the bottom of the piston being able to start rocking at earlier wear than most bikes I have seen. Could be something less crazy too..
