Strange but EFFECTIVE! Watch this before you run NYC marathon

This started out as a short list of the strange (but effective) things I've done and am doing leading up to running the New York City Marathon.
As the partially extemporaneous list got longer and longer, I've realized that maybe I'm just stranger than I thought 🤣.
Hopefully something here can help make your next marathon or half marathon better.

Great tips! None of these tips are weird as you say, all very sensible, especially the hydration strategy. I love matching playlists with your sections!

Great tips, not strange at all. I always try to build a playlist according to what I think I'll need on the course. Thank you, I really like the section idea and will do that when I run my "bucket list" race this year ... NYC! Been trying to get in for 5 years now ... Now I'm in for 2023!

For sure all the checklists and I like to stay a Mile out from the start and walk there talking to myself like a crazy person lol being my own hype man. At NYC I didnt get to walk there but I wore a hole in the staging area for sure lol.

Many years ago I did a weekend judo seminar with a bunch of Russian guys. After the first day of they all wanted to go out for “a” drink after training. Needless to say it wasn’t just the one and the even though I didn’t bother trying to keep up with them more than one is usually too many….the next morning before training these guys were passing around a Costco size jar of pickle juice. I didn’t think my stomach could handle it, but it does work for hydration and replacing electrolytes. I only found out later that they had tossed all of the pickles into the bushes. To sum up, pickle juice good, drinking with Russians bad.

At the end of my recent half marathon PR my math was so bad I thought 400m was going to take me 60s... sure that's 4min/mi pace but how am I supposed to figure that out at 193bpm? Wasn't the big PR I thought it'd be but still came in under. Math while running is hard.

Great tips, not weird at all. I’ve used Garmin’s “PacePro” feature but haven’t seen anyone else mention “sectioning” the race in the way that you did, I like that approach. Also, matching your playlist to the energy needed is a great tip. I shuffle my playlists so it’s hard to do that exactly but I did have two playlists during my marathon - one I used during the first 20 miles and another I used for the last 6.2 called “Grind” which was hype AF and I didn’t listen to at all during training. Appreciate you sharing what you do with all of this!

I've played around a little with pacepro but ultimately I like the sectioning because I'm getting the exact same feedback I get during a interval session it tempo run. I'd be too afraid to try something different during a race.

Great video, Kori. I hope in hydration day you're doing not just water, but electrolyte drinks as well. Gotta make sure you get that sodium. A tip I have is that I like to take a salt tab the night before the marathon. What wave are you in for the marathon?

57...that's the number of marathons I've run. Thank you for this video, Kori. I always appreciate the insight from other runners. Crossing my fingers for a NYC bib this year, when it opens in a few weeks or so. Haven't run it since 2008. Also, gonna pass on the Pickle Juice idea, but "charge day" is a GO! Happy New Year!!!

Best of luck, Kori. Great tips. NY was my first & I remember I couldn’t really get going until mile 3 (this was in 2006), which served me well in terms of pulling back. Alphafly, I just tried it. Curious what you think after the race & I too walk through aid stations. I feel like I lose time trying to run & drink. A tip my Ironman uncle gave me. I’m too afraid to let my watch guide my pace so I’ve just been running on mostly feel, but am so envious if those who can really let it guide them.

I will fill the tub with water and dump about 7-8 cups of epsom salt and soak after my long runs. The epsom reduces swelling and inflammation, gives me an excuse to sit for about 20 minutes and it does wonders for my recovery. I tried listening to standup comedy when I ran, that was a horrible idea. Nothing takes your breathe away faster than a hearty laugh

Great tips Kori! I created a "workout" for London but my gel alerts stopped working during the "workout" 😡 I skipped the workout so the gel alerts would work. I feel it's more important to take my gels at the right time. I ended up setting an alert for slow/fast pace. It worked but I missed the pace graph that I see on a "workout". It's so much easier to see my pace with the graph. I started to walk at each water station to give my legs a rest. It seemed to work in London. I think I will do the same for NY. I also start hydrating the week before the marathon. I do the same with carb loading. I have at least 1 pasta dish per day 😆 Hope to see you at the marathon!

These are great tips! Pickle juice works! ❤I also like breaking the course into sections, too, and depending on challenge each section offers, having a planned mantra, “Hills are fun. Let’s relax up.” I know that’s weird but works for me. Have a great NYC. You’re ready!
