Why not just stay on the ship? way safer than making a camp in a jungle, I'm sure no matter how messed up it was giving shields still worked it was better than a hacked-together outside camp.

We go from a group of refugees to two, what happened to the others during the building, planning and conflict. They beat the mercenaries, were able to obtain a perfectly functional ship that apparently was not affected by the gravitational anomalies ....and let it go. They beat the larger group, gaining access to another ship (something that would be pretty handy now, wouldn't it), then send it off because they are tactically too stupid to hang onto a valuable asset. By the stories end there only appears to be three of them, any merc worth his salt would simply do an air to ground attack. Do better.
