Straight vs Oblique Holder

I always write Copperplate Script with a straight holder. For Spencerian I use an oblique holder.
Recently I have been teaching myself Modern Calligraphy but using my knowledge of traditional calligraphic movements and tools and coming up with so interesting developments.
Today I had to talk about the difference between English Roundhand, Copperplate, Engrossers and Engravers, the latter 2 being oblique holder scripts and the former 2 straight holder scripts.
So much can be said on this topic and I touch on it briefly in my Copperplate Script Manual.
Try writing the script with both holders. What do you think are the differences?

Really loving your channel Paul, thank you for everything you're putting out. I'm new to calligraphy and have purchased your Copperplate manual today, plenty to get stuck into - I'm excited !! I think I will book onto your Copperplate workshop Sunday 28 Feb, I look forward to it. I'm new to this so don't have such a discerning eye yet but it looks to me as though the weight of the swell is slightly more evenly distributed throughout the stroke with a straight holder (particularly in the 'D' of your example) Once again, thanks and best wishes

The straight holder gives me more control and feeling, but the angles almost never are right or even... with the oblique the ends become sharper and is easier to write, but It seems that the writing itself, despite being beautiful, becomes too impersonal when compared to that writen with the straight one. Or maybe its a personal impressionn.

I think in Copperplate, Straight pen holder should be more useful and justified, as this kind of holder is more likely an extension of your arm, so the command over your pen is more than an Oblique one . The degree of writing and the thick or heavy portion of stroke in the middle of a letter needs much control which is hard to find in an Oblique holder. You will find the Straight holder useful in writing Business Hand also. In Spnecerian the most eye catching thing is its' offhand writing style. If you want to write these kind of things with the help of a Straight Holder it will be more than a tough one. Here the Oblique Holder comes in front. With maximum practice and a more flexible nib you can do wonder with this. Will be waiting to hear you.

The straight holder is good for English Roundhand (historical) and Copperplate scripts from the UK and Europe. Scripts like Engrossers and Engravers are best done with an Oblique, as the American pen used oblique holders for Spencerian so their alteration of English Roundhand to Engravers and Engrossers require the tool the chose to write it with.

Hmm goes without saying your work is remarkable. I am bit confused though, I thought that the nib should be pointed at the slant line, your nib in straight holder appears to be off the slant line and it feels like nib is taking lot of pressure to compensate the angle. Also I'm curious why did you twist the nib for F ? Thank you

I discuss my use of the nib in the free video on my Scriptorium on Zenler. Best to watch the video there as it is a complex explanation which would take too long to type here.

IS it the angle that is different? I have always wanted to know:) Thanks for the example.

Being left handed, the Oblique holder allows me a much more natural wrist posture than with the straight. I turn the paper so that the direction of the text is perpendicular to me. This allows whole arm movements without any strange contortions.

It is definitely useful for lefties, but that also depends on the leftie hold. The truth of the matter is, copperplate is at 55° and that is perfect for a leftie who is a mirror right hander.

@@PAScribe Could you explain that, if you don't mind? I know from a previous video that you mentioned that you say lefties should also use a straight. I know that you elaborate on it in your manual but I haven't had the opportunity to purchase it yet.

You need to look harder then, but you might be happy with what you are doing and that is fine, but this is for those really trying to understand the subtleties of the line. It makes a huge difference when you get down to the minutiae

@@PAScribe i am just started today with Calligraphy, so realy not good into it. I want to see what i need to see, not bashing you or anything like that ;-) When i look more intense now, do you mean the straight is a litle more woblier? The A for example, i do not see a difference. The upper shadow of the D starts way later by the straight pen, is this from the difference? Please point me out.

@@JustMe-sh8nd if you are at the beginning you can’t see this until you have learned a script. It is only once that is done will you be able to see to difference once the tools are applied. Copperplate with a straight is always better than with an oblique
