Stowa Partitio & Allen Edmonds The Strand. Are They Worth It? Watch & Shoes Review.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

For this video I've bought a German Stowa Partitio Watch, which follows the paths of 1930s watchmaking. A pure watch with three hands, black dial and dominant lume.
In the seconds half of the video I go over a pair of Allen Edmonds "The Strand" shoes. Are they worth the money? Is there leather quality, good fit and attention to detail. Let's find out in an in depth review.

I'll say that Allen Edmonds has decent deals ON THE STATES SIDE!!! If you want to go for Allen Edmonds, what people usually do if they buy online is to buy 2 pairs and return one, OR you call a store to select the pair of shoes for you and then send. I have two pairs of Allen Edmonds and I love them, I just bought a third pair. I also have a pair of Cobbler Union which are in a league of their own.

Stowa does not market the Partitio as a "military" watch, but it is a nearly perfect modern interpretation of several World War Two and Korea military watches. I love it, and own 2 of them! The standard one. and the fancier "Black" model, that has gilded hands. Very expensive ($800) for what it is, a 3-hand vintage style watch, but if you own one of these you don't need any others. I am tired of gigantic "dinner plate" 43mm watches, and wear my Partitios all the time.

The quality of Allen Edmond's shoes has gone down a bit since it's acquisition by the Caleras group. I have a lot of history with them selling them a new phone system in 1982 at their old factory in Belgium Wisconsin. That factory burned down and they rebuilt in Port Washington Wisconsin. The hand finishing was excellent at that time and up until their sale. Back in 1982 the CEO, John Stolenwerk told me that there were very few companies that made shoes like they did. No metal stays anywhere, all leather and yes they will squeak a bit as the leather works itself in. I have a closet full of them and still own my original pair from 1982. I don't know if they still offer factory repair services but that was a nice bonus. For $70 they completely refinish the shoes and if they can't repair them they send you a new pair. One funny story is the time Mr. Stolenwerk went to Japan for a trade show and set up a stand outside the show with his shoes because only Japanese shoe companies were allowed their. That was the time when we were having challenges with the trade imbalance with Japan. He was so successful that he was getting orders from Japanese consumers and had quite a cult following there.

I'm a big fan of Allen Edmonds shoes and over the years have collected a few pairs that I wear fairly regularly. But as much as I like them, I agree with you that sometimes the soles, and in particular the heels, could have used a little more attention. Nonetheless, I still consider them excellent shoes, the kind that, if properly cared for, will last quite a few years. Like with a quirky watch, I'm betting you'll grow to like them.

Though I would not exactly call it a dress watch. But with that size and dial style it would make a perfect " every day " watch. You could wear it in most social settings and it would not be out of place. I really do like the more traditional shape of toe on those brogues. But their quality leaves something to be desired, especially at that price.

Good vid. I've purchased Allen Edmonds shoes for years and prefer them to most others for pure dress shoes. Most of those have been "seconds" purchased from their "Company Stores." Quality for hand-made products vary from item to item. The quality of my "seconds" are better than what you showed. Hence, for some items it is better to be able to hold, inspect, and fit a product before purchasing. Shoes are, in my opinion, one of those (usually). Glad you got a partial price refund. Oh yes, nice watch. Good vid. Keep at it.

Thanks (yet again) Tim for introducing me to another lovely niche example, this time in the form of a Stowa Partito - love it! Part Bauhaus, part Dirty Dozen, part Explorer...Extremely versatile - NATO strap for the field, or a $100 / 100€ leather strap for the office or steakhouse. Glad that Stowa went no-date for symmetry and ease of “synchronized kick-starting” for those of us with a calendar rotation to wear our collection pieces at regular intervals. For $720 USD and Made in Germany with the workhouse SW200, I would take that all day over a Hamilton Khaki Field offering.

I thought the loser would be Stowa, and I'm glad I was wrong. I love that watch - if it were 1 or 2 mm thinner, it would be perfect for my taste, but it's close enough as it is. I'll save it in my "maybe one day" folder. Too bad for the shoes. I have generic brand shoes which are better finished. Maybe you just got a bad specimen, but still I expect a better quality control at that price point. They took the wrong page out of Seiko's book.

I ordered two Allen Edmonds shoes Both had finish issues nothing major but for the price they should be perfect. Both shoes were returned and I have written off the company.

I already keep an eye on a Partitio. A nice watch from a decent manufacturer. I seems to me that these Stowa guys treat the old compamy brand name with decent respect. Something that cannot be stated about many of the old brand names. I´m a shoe nerd too. A.E. although quite pricey is a somehow mediocre U.S. brand. I have a very good - long - term experience with Dinkelacker Rio and Paris Brogues AND if U.S. made is a must for you my Alden Longwing Blucher. These Aldens are my favourite shoes , just perfect, however quite pricey but for sure worth the much higher price compared to A.E. There is a brand called Grant Stone - the build nice Longwings at a fair price, just take a look.

The marks on the inside of the heel look like 'pedal marks' from your bicycle. I like the Stowa, especially the size; but it strikes me as a 'military/field' design, not at all a 'dress' watch. For me a dress watch should ignore the confines of pure utilitarianism, have maybe some precious metals on it, not have lume or a complete number set (1-12) let alone minute numbering. It also shouldn't have day or date (no probs with it here). Perhaps I'm just old-fashioned. Btw. Had to laugh when you said you could trace the leather back to the individual animal. What punishment do you propose to visit on a dead cow? :)

Ahhhh it´s Michael again ! 👍👍👍 I guess you´re right mate. I think the Patritio is a somehow - a bit elegant - field watch and not a dress watch. As you already mentioned, a real dress watch ( to me) looks´like a P.P Calatrava, a Bambino or an old 6085 Bubble Back.

I would define it as a “classic” styled watch. It can be worn in an every day setting but it’s size and refined design gives it the flexibility To be worn in a dressier situation. I own the partitio with red seconds hand and when I want to dress it up I pair it with a red alligator strap.

@@bjlochow7136 I've nothing bad to say about the watch design. It's a wonderful example of a military/field watch for modern tastes. Only the 50m WR lets it down. I'm just saying that a dress-watch, traditionally, is a piece of discrete jewellery worn for formal occasions. Nowadays, the term applies to anything that will fit inside a wizard's sleeve. I guess we need to re-define the term 'dresswatch', but who's going to do that? TGV? 'The Time Teller? There must be a better way.

@@michaelbedford8017 I agree it’s not a dress watch and I never said it was. I would define as a classic styled watch and that’s how Stowa defines it too btw. We watch enthusiasts like to define everything and put it in a box and make rules about what qualifies as a certain type of watch. I for one wear what I enjoy and don’t worry about what others may think. This watch is a versatile, classically styled, every day piece that also can be pulled off in a business casual setting. Which is about as dressy as most of us get these days.

At that price point you shouldn’t be having those issues with those shoes.

Noise cure, thank me later - buy "saddle soap". Put it between the tongue and what it comes into contact with. All noise forever gone. I've done this on multiple pairs of Allen Edmonds shoes. Saddle soap was $1 on Amazon.

Unfortunately I'm pretty sure that the noise comes from the sole. Unreachable with saddle soap.

On Instagram I voted for the Stowa to fail - unless AE's well known quality control issues kicked in. And they did! This is laughable. Berwick, Loake, Showpassion,Velasca and a dozen more brands offer more consistent quality for way less money. At least they gave you a partial refund.

I bought a pair of Berwick shoes randomly when I was in Spain. Fantastic shoes on par or better than AE. AE just has an advantage because of width variety and a lot of styles. I own quite a few pairs of AE. They could definitely step it up in the QC dept.

@@donguapisimo4222 You're right, AE's wide range of sizing options is really something! Thus I'm glad that Berwick's standard last works well for my foot. :)

Pity about the shoes. Not what maker or buyer would want, in this case. (Very sad face)

I would also add a protective sole to every GYW shoe I buy but would normally chose leather for the better look especially on formal dress shoes. If you go for high quality (like Rendenbach) this will last for a similar time as rubber soles would do. Also, I would go for „sunken“ irons which are a bit more expensive but are level with the rest of the sole which is again stylistically more satisfying and less likely to be ripped off or make you stumble. The quality of the old high level brands like Alden but also C&J is difficult to assess if not questionable these days. I find better better value for money in low to mid tier brands like Samuel Windsor, Herring or Berwick some of which I bought for less than 150€ but have been wearing them for years without any issue beyond normal repairs (of course all are GYW). Finally, if your pair of Aldens finally needs repair I can strongly recommend the services of shoedoc.de which is part of the well renowned German bespoke shoemaker Vickermann & Stoya.
