I tell you, Spain will teach you to take life easy. I'm still battling with it though. I can't fathom why I'm not as relaxed as those mothers that stay out taking coffee after dropping the kids at school, and later sit out in the evenings watching their kids play in the park. I find myself thinking, "there must be something better I can do with my time". But now that my body is breaking down... I understand that those where smarter women.

It takes time, depending on where you are coming from. At first I was peeved by their laid back attitude to life. But I quickly learnt my lesson. They are very smart. The shocking thing is that even the most financially successful amongst them still live the laid back life, have time for family so it's not about overworking oneself, they know how to work smart, set money traps and be content with what comes in.

Auntie Flo, I've been to the UK several times, and my big brother lives there. I can't live there either. For me, i lived in Canada for thirty-four years. I had a great job that paid me six figures per year. For the last five years, i couldn't handle the damp, depressing wintry weather. I started suffering from seasonal depression. At the age of 52, i retired from my job and ran away to Tanzania. I have been living in Tanzania for fifteen months now. The time in Tanzania has been the best time of my life. There are challenges, of course, but i don't care. I am living my best life

The French and the Spanish are two peas in a pod. On my way to the UK, I was first in France for an introductory course in Pau, everywhere sunny and bright, great food and wine, we went on a day trip to St Jean de Luz and Biarritz. Had so much fun, great weather only to arrive in the UK to see the complete opposite! 😂

I have lived here more than I have lived in Naija having been here for thirty seven years and I won't swap it for anywhere else. We have taken vacation to Spain a few times and I must say what I love there is the weather. It was a shock to see that shops are closed at certain times for them to sleep😊 Most of our people here work round the clock so it can be boring for them

A lot of Nigerians say there's no money in Spain. 🤷‍♀️ The worth of money is different for different people. I often talk about learning Spanish in my vlogs. Yes, Spain is pleasant, nice weather, nice people (though some people disagree 😂) and they invest a lot in making their country look nice. Their GDP depends on tourism so they try to keep it looking good. Spain awaits you.

The relationship is sentimental for sure but I wholeheartedly understand the dreariness. Funny, our youngest went on a study abroad last spring and absolutely loved it. She was so sad to come back. She loved the culture and the people and had a wonderful experience. But it was just a short time so can be deceptive. Great video! Thanks again.

I was in the UK: coefficient 1, paid in dollars while living in a stronger currency country in an era when the dollar was so weak. Meanwhile my friends were earning 1.75 in Luanda, Malabo, 1.6 in south east Asia, in the best climates, being chauffeured around, fed, waited on. They hardly touched their money. But there I was depressed in the UK. The only thing I got was a furnished flat that tax man will even come and charge me extra tax for every year. 😂🤣 All that glitters are not gold ooo. However the past few years our UK weather has me seriously considering relocating and the only reason I have held off is because the children are in secondary school. I believe once they get into UNI I will definitely relocate. Having a garden to grow food and the outdoor space makes it bearable but it is still not the nicest of weathers especially late autumn-winter. I'm the child of parents that moved to Nigeria in the 80s. Even I hate it here. The weather is shocking! But my whole support system is here now. If I wanted to move to Nigeria, logistically its already stress and the family that is back home are all distant relatives. The only thing that makes sense is my work from home opportunity. I can afford it very comfy in Nigeria but the lifestyle over there is a big 'I-dont-know'. It's an interesting crossroad for me as a 30y/o. Maybe this is my version of a mid-life crisis hahaha. Something for me to still pray about I guess..

Yes o, quarter life crisis is a thing. 😂 May you receive clarity on that soon. ❤ Did you mean to say that your parents moved to the UK in the 80s? In that case you grew up in the UK so it's understandable how you can't just up and move to Nigeria. Mine was the other way round, I grew up in Nigeria till I got the job in Nigeria and was posted to the UK, my first time leaving Nigeria. I arrived in south of France first for a two-week course. So imagine me after experiencing France to arrive in the UK with such expectations of "European" weather. Ahhhh! I wanted to run back immediately.

Indeed. One of my husband's colleagues and his wife visited his wife's relatives in the UK this Easter. They were supposed to be there for 1 week but after 3 days the man booked another return flight and came back because according to him, he couldn't handle it. He said it was raining all through. Not just the rain, that there's this look the whole place had that was driving him crazy.

Good video, Flo. Talking about living in Spain, I noticed what you alluded to - most dwellings are in flats. This appears to be applicable to many other parts of Europe - in contrast to the own-house culture of the UK and the US. Personally, I do feel like this has a strong link to the endless rat-race in these 2-letter countries. What do you think?

I don't know the origin of building up (central Europeans practice) versus building out (UK and US practice). I understand the individual houses and massive lawns in the USA because they have a lot of land. I don't understand the UK's practice because they are a small island and their land will soon finish yet they are building outwards. 😂😂 Spain has much more land that the whole of UK but they build upwards. 🤷‍♀️ Spain will rather use their land for agriculture.

See eh! that word you mentioned 'okupas' aka 'squatters'? That's the problem my city is facing for the longest. They will occupy someone's home and lie from heaven to earth that they are renting it and can't be evicted...and they can't be removed by force from that home. The homeowner will have to take them to court and it takes months...even YEARS to get this issue settled. Until then, the owner will continue to pay any mortgage or utility bills. And if the owner dares to cut the utility, the owner can go to jail because the law sees it as torture. This is terrible for homeowners. Literally, at this moment, the state reps are drafting a bill that will protects homeowners from these evil (sometimes deadly) squatters. God help us!

That same March, I saw the story of that woman in New York that was arrested because she changed the locks on her $1 Million home to keep away squatters. I was here fuming! Why is this an issue all over the world? Like, it's obvious who owns the house, why is it difficult to eject the squatters? I just can't wrap my head around this thing.

What? 180 to 200k for that house you described? Here in Germany, that kind of apartment in a good area, not inside the bush and not in the middle of city, will go from 500k up. Inside city will go for 800k to 1m. Incase your wondering how we're managing to buy it and pay.. WE ARE NOT! 90 percent of humans here don't own their houses. We take life easy, enjoy it and live on rent all the way.

  • @FloChinyere

    @FloChinyere

Ahhh Germany is a very strong economy so I am sure that overall, housing prices over there can't be compared to Spain. Here, it depends on the city though. This amount I quoted is for right inside the city of about 170,000 people. In the south for instance Costa del Sol where celebrities and billionaires from all over the world come to buy houses, you will find very high prices. But really, I'm surprised to read that it's not common to own in Germany even for Germans. What will they do when they retire? Here in Spain, the Spaniards even have 2 homes like the Igbos, one in the city and one in their village.

  • @prudyskitchen6630

@@FloChinyere what will they do when they retire? Good question. They continue living in the rented apartment. Almost everyone has pension, either by work or just by being a citizen. Then who doesn't have pension, his or her bills are taken care of by social services. The only thing that can happen is you moving from a big house to a smaller house to suit your pension and or allowance. All in all, you will be fine when you retire. Government takes care of Everybody here, young and old. But, their is one more major reason people don't own houses...the loneliness is real. Kids are grown, they left, that big house, what will you do with it? Paying big tax for a house you can't even clean and 90% of it you don't use. Then if you buy a small apartment you suffer to pay for it for 30 years (average person). Denying yourself the enjoyment of life or even experiencing any other part of the country because you're stuck in a flat you bought. Not forgetting that government will not give you penny in case you need money if you own a house. But you live in a small communal apartment, you get to say good morning my neighbours! every morning. Pay your rent with some of your monthly money like you have always done all your life. You can clean your apartment and your house doesn't echo with solitude in this cold country. Some people even give up any form of house or apartment they rented or bought, and move in willingly to the old peoples home just for company.

  • @FloChinyere

Now that's a whole new level of can't be bothered with the housing market! I mean, not even the fact that by the time one retires, the person would have paid enough rent to own a house makes them buy houses. The retirement benefits must be very good. And here I was thinking that upon retirement, the Germans sell their homes to come and buy one in Spain. 😂 Thank you for taking the time to give me this information. ❤❤❤

People complain about UK weather like the people in the UK are to blame for why the weather is like that. If youre familiar with secondary school geography, you would have figured out that UK is an Island in the middle of the Atlantic Oceen and at the mercy of all weather fronts. You can't expect UK weather to be like that of other parts of Europe that are landlocked and closer to tropical Africa. The weather or land mass of the UK is not going shift because some people don't like it. It's a case of making necessary adjustments and making the most of your lĺfe and adjusting to each weather front as it comes. It shouldn't be a big deal because some people live in Alaska, Greenland and other areas covered by snow for most of the year and are still happy. UK's weather can't be harsher than that of the above places.

I've lived in the UK for 30 years. Sadly, most people who have an aversion or negative views about the UK have only ever been to London or one or two mega cities. That's not a good yardstick for judging life in the UK. You can't judge a whole country based on your experience of one city, county or region. More so, life exist in other regions in England, Scotland, Wales& Northern Ireland, each with their own autonomy. I live in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and am very Happy here. Your comment is like going to Lagos and judging the whole of Nigeria based on your experience of Lagos. The rating of happiness you refer to is post-Brexit. There's no doubt that leaving the EU has made life harder but the British government won't admit that. I didn't vote to leave but many British people including immigrants were misled to vote OUT by fascist parties who championed Brexit. Now they're all feeling the pinch, though they won't admit it. Our universities are running at a loss as a result and if the Tories remain in power, most Universities will go bankrupt in the next 5 years.

I guess I was in a position to have a choice. If I arrived the UK with a family back then, I wouldn't have had the luxury of making such a snappy decision to move back "just" because of weather and "how I felt" about it. If I had other family members to consider or if I went through a rigourous relocation/japa process that people go through, I would have sucked it up and stayed back albeit depressed. That's life.
