Story of the Toxic Poker Rivalry between Daniel Negreanu and Annie Duke

Ойын-сауық

The fact that Annie Duke and Daniel Negreanu don't like each other is one of the worst kept secrets in poker. Yet, what most don't grasp is the depth of their longstanding poker rivalry. This is the story of the decade long poker rivalry between Daniel Negreanu and Annie Duke.

My first World Series was 2005. I was in a $1500 event and moved into Annie’s table. She busted, and Negreanu ended up filling her old seat. Once he found out it was her old seat, he made a grossed-out gasp and pulled sanitary wipes out of his backpack and wiped down the rail and chair😂. It was a weird and memorable moment for a first timer with the pros lol.

Annie Duke and Howard Lederer both proved to be despicable human beings after the early controversies surrounding online poker and their involvements in cheating, stealing and essentially making it untenable for anyone to play on the sites they endorsed. They unfortunately got Chris Ferguson caught up in the mess as well. Not that Chris deserves any less hostility from the poker community.

It's track towards insolvency started when they still allowed US players to continue to play and credit with a "deposit" even though FT could not always complete the financial withdrawal from US accounts. FT had started to execute / complete those back transactions when they feds shut them down. So, the US fed UIGEA illegally (i.e., they had no legal right to stop me from gambling) caused the first problem, and then they stepped in to stop FT from getting around their restrictions, which is what they really cared about (they did not care about protecting me and you).

To people saying there is no "proof" of Annie cheating, her boyfriend was using her account and she continually denied knowing who the user was in her commentary for the final table of that 1k tournament. She even goes out of her way to say, "Who could this unknown be?" multiple times. It was her boyfriend who took down a 1k tournament on a website that was proven to be fraudulent and she denies even knowing who the guy is(maybe because people would put, 2 and 2 together? which makes her come out looking worse for denying it)

No data to back this up, but I dealt for a living for over 15 years and played with some small success. Based on my experiences, I've come to believe the incidence of narcissism among professional poker players has to be tremendously higher than the population at large, and in my opinion, this feud is a perfect example of two toxic narcissists going at each other and thinking people care. Of the two, I definitely think Annie Duke is much worse. I have real-time experience with her, and in my opinion, she's just as crooked and entitled as Negreanu says she is. Daniel can be extremely hypocritical, though. When Daniel was so openly critical of Howard Lederer after the Full Tilt debacle, I agreed with every word he said, BUT in the months and years after, I noticed Daniel doesn't hold friends to anywhere near the same standard. He often defends them in equally shady circumstances; for example when Eric Lindgren flat-out stole a million bucks from Chris Ferguson. 15+ years later, Lindgren still hasn't paid it back, and Negreanu still insists it's Full Tilt's bookkeeping department's fault. Lindgren knew Ferguson agreed to loan him a million bucks, Full Tilt accidentally wired him the million bucks twice, and he never gave the extra million back. Never paid the other million back, either. During the poker boom I was always amazed that so many people were lining up to blow all these "poker pros", treating them like rockstars when so many of them are crooks, thieves and con artists.

Sounds to me like Daniel's complaints about Annie (I'm halfway through the video) are not about her hair or make-up or tone of voice, they are about her behavior as a professional poker player. I get the feeling she could hang out on yachts or on rafts - away from the table - and it wouldn't make any difference at all to Daniel. She could bluff a blue streak, and he wouldn't complain. I.e. It's not personal, it is professional, like criticizing a cab driver who drives very badly, and not wanting to be on the same road. These guys aren't playing for $5.00 buy-ins with friends, but even then, guys would shun someone who, for example, peered over at their neighbor's hand.

My favorite thing from this whole thing knowing very little about either of these people going in, is Annie writing an "open letter to Pokerstars" - *"...about treating people with respect, and the use of a word that is abusive and demeaning to ALL WOMEN."* (Basically trying to get him fired/punished because she didn't like that he called her a mean word, and she wanted to distract and deflect away from any other points Dan was making at that moment...) Trying to make sure he's punished for "treating a woman poker player badly" -When he didn't hold back his take, regardless of the fact she's a woman, because that's irrelevant to her character, and the way she acts and behaves... Annie LOVES to talk on behalf.of all women, and utilize being a women whenever its convenient for her... As long as it benefits her in some way. Whenever its convenient for her to mention her gender in order to separate herself from her male competitors, usually as a point of pride... When somebody points out the hypocrisy in Annie declaring herself "the best *female* poker player, when Annie herself wants to try and make the point "men/women only tournaments" really shoudnt exist, because THAT separates by gender, and it should just be "poker" - not *men/women' poker"- gender is irrelevant to poker... Apparently... But then... Why does it matter that Daniel called you a c*nt, and moreso, why would it be any more or less demeaning because youre a "women poker player"? So you can demean him, and she can even call him a c*nt if she wanted with this logic, but if HE says that to HER, according to her, it's essentially the equivalent of the "N" word when used towards any woman... And she's a woman don't forget... All the sudden she gets to MAGICALLY invoke the power of a made up army of "the vast majority" of the 4+/- billion other women in the world, to defend eachothers honour or some shit... "Abusive and demeaning to all women" lmfao... Im pretty sure he was talking DIRECTLY TO YOU, and NOBODY else. Didn't call *any* other woman that word in this case... Once again, when its convenient to bring up her gender to separate herself, and especially as a way to put herself above others, there's NO hesitation or second thoughts... When others treat her like they would any other male competitor (which she claims she wants...) Especially treating her how they do, when she acts the way she does, LORD have mercy! You just did a FEMALE poker player wrong! Even tho its not wrong apparently if its a male...? It's worse? Ok Annie. SO clear to see through the type of person she is, and its exactly who Daniel said she was time after time after time...

In the third of Daniel's list of examples of Annie's bad behavior (5:41), the narration explains that Tony "revealed his two Aces" and that "Annie grabbed the folded cards, glanced at them". This is not accurate to the text explanation of the story. In the text, the story is that Dan folded, Tony DID NOT show his Aces. He mucked his hole cards while telling Dan that it was Aces. Annie grabbed the mucked winning hole cards (the Aces) and checked whether Tony was telling the truth about it being Aces.

Anyone from the era will never forget the black friday scandal, and finding out that they had their fingers in cash drawer, taking from the players. Howard, Annie, and others including Chris Ferguson had their careers destroyed by their own bad acts. I am with Daniel on this one.
