Great work Peter. This is a clear example of why people need to process photos. Respectfully, the original RAW photo lacks drama and mood in so many ways. Your colour grade and crop turn what was a photo into a photo of intrigue and mystery. Job well done!

Thank you Peter, I really enjoy your style of street photography. What I really liked about this video was how little post production you needed. Crop, contrast, WB, highlights. Really emphasises trying to get the composition right (in the time available) and getting the exposure as best as possible in camera. Many thanks. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

Yes... liked this in the first video featuring it. Much appreciated to have you zooming in on it again and providing the additional information - certainly worthwhile with an image of this quality. Personally, i was struck by the extent of the crop, but fully understand the situation and the need to go so far. Lucky you having days of long shadows to play with too. Cheers and all the best from New Zealand.

Thanks for sharing your process. The part that caught me right away was how you chose the location because of the long shadows. Without those shadows this image wouldn’t have the same impact that it does. I’m curious about your focusing technique and how you were able to nail the focus so quickly. From the original image I can see the focus would have been on the left. I struggle at times to quickly get the focus. Great timing and eye to see it happening!

I had the camera on AF. The focus was on the left side. The DOF is enough for the image to be sharp. I think the AF point was on the black jacket. I have to check that out.

I do like this image. The woman is looking back to something that is not revealed because the next person's head is not visible. That creates tension. The dark shadows reinforce that tension. I remember the fad in the 1970s of not cropping street photos. People actually filed out their enlarger negative carriers so that the edges of the negative were revealed to prove that the photo had not bee cropped. Somehow, this "validated" the photo; the photographer was a genius because they perfectly composed the photo in the viewfinder. This was repeatedly debunked by exhibit curators, who displayed contact sheets showing how geniuses like Robert Frank did in fact crop. As for the poseurs who insisted that cropping was bad: in the digital age they can add fake the edges of the negative in post, and they can also abrade the corners and edges of their brand new Leicas to make them look like well used photojournalist cameras. LOL.

  • @ForsgardPeter

I have never been against cropping. It is a myth that no cropping was done in the golden era of street photography. As you sat it has been debunked for many times. Nothing wrong with cropping. I always try to previsualize the image when making it. Sometimes I find a new way of cropping in post.

...I like the vivid red and the contrast with the dark surround,, I appreciate your commentary re the importance of cropping,, but the headless men worry me,, it suggests to me a photo taken quickly to grab the moment but so quickly that a major component (the men) missed out on having their heads included

  • @ForsgardPeter

I think leaving the heads out made the image better. There is more questions and it makes the image more mysterious. We do not know what is going on. Yes, I see your point and that is the beauty of a photograph, that we can interped that differently and we all "right".

Love those long shadows --- never thought about that about "up there" 2:21 that's a good idea . Cropping : isn't composition more important than sharpness? Sharpness is something I feel is so over rated these days . Or isn't a small , but great photo just as good , if not better , than a large photo with lots of distraction.? I remember back in film days when the perfectionists claimed a photo should never be cropped and they printed their usually B+W photos to show the edges of the negative ! Yeah WHAT!! My thought has always been ''not every subject will fit perfectly on every size sensor there is , or even film format ''. Most if not all my photos therefore are cropped in some way and that cropping is often considered when taking the photo ; as is editing to make the subject as I saw it . How did I see the image ? Just an eye catcher "picture" that one cannot walk past because there is a main subject --- woman in red with reflection -- that held my attention ----- didn't think too much about the men until you mentioned your thoughts , so perhaps I don't look enough at a photo ; or read a photo as I used to put it . I never really understood how one photo tells a story ; or should I say a "true story" . Perhaps I should blame FB and a too fast scrolling finger . Now that was been honest!
