This was meant to be the Sharks year, they dominated the 99 season but choked against St. George in the Prelim, I guarantee you if they made the GF instead of St. George they would’ve won it.

They somewhat overachieved in 1999 though. They beat minor premiers Cronulla after coming back from an 8-0 defecit at the break to win thanks largely in part from an individual brilliance from Mundine. Then they just ran out of gas toward the end of the GF as a result.

That has to be one of the all time greatest comebacks of all time.!! Lead by.the forwards in the second half by Chief Tawera Nikau, Rodney Howe, Paul Marquet, Roarty, Matt Rua, Bowden... They all stood proud. What a game.! Record crowd, controversial finish that made it the most memorable final ever.!! Well done Melbourne Storm.!!

Had a whiff about it that final series. Murdoch's growing influence on the game, a merged team and the new Victorian franchise that the newly named NRL needed to push in the Grand Final. Stephen Kearney had laid a brutal high shot on Parramatta's Dave Penna in the final against the Eels, knocking him out of the contest. Eels coach Brian Smith mentioned in the press conference post game that Kearney wouldn't be playing in the Grand Final. Of course he was "miraculously" cleared mid week by the judiciary. Matt Geyer's forward pass for Tony Martin's try. With Vlandy's obsession with betting/gambling the NRL has only gone further downhill as it heavily relies on lucrative Channel Nein and Fox tmillions to keep the game afloat for the television market. Constant rules changes and meddling haven't helped. Zero tackle/six again rule designed to give the officials way to power to control the flow of games and the The Bunker able to turn a game with umpteen replays to come up with nonsensical rulings/decisions to sway games.
