Stop Your Programs Reporting Your Activity with Little Snitch

Ғылым және технология

Our computers constantly talk to servers across the internet without us realizing, sharing information about our activities. Most of us don't even realize how many programs are silently connecting to the internet and sharing data. It usually happens without our explicit consent.
But we can block these connections. On Mac, you can use a program called Little Snitch.
In this video we look at the data is silently transmitted from our computer through things like telemetry, and show you how to use Little Snitch to regain control over the data leaving your computer.
00:00 Your Computer’s SECRET WHISPERS
01:39 Data Leaving Your Computer
04:02 Little Snitch Walkthrough
10:13 Bazzell’s Settings
10:35 A Note About Alerts and Rules
11:48 Conclusion
Using a reverse firewall like Little Snitch can be very revealing about how much data is silently being transmitted from our computer. Simply becoming aware of this can help us make better decisions with the tech we use.
Our suggestions come from privacy expert Michael Bazzell, and we highly recommend you check out his site: inteltechniques.com/blog/2021...

Portmaster is another similar program for Windows. All these options would be built directly into the OS if they actually had their customers best interests in mind, but I am just glad there are dedicated people building great options like this.

I have a PCWRT router for parental controls, but you can use it to block any outbound traffic if you want. A lot of the telemetry is blocked by the built-in ad blocker, which you can fine tune to suit your needs. IMO a router solution is needed to block data exhilaration by smart TVs, cameras, door bells etc.

I remember many years ago when I got an alert that someone was trying to use Firefox as a server. Back then I found that surprising. There's no telling what other apps that allow this stuff to happen. I use Linux today but I do have a couple of Windows machines because my kids are into online gaming. Anyway, despite my belief that there shouldn't be any government intervention, it seems that these software developers bring government regulation upon themselves. Too bad the government can't seem to lock down their own systems let alone our systems.

I like this "undo" option. Too many other programs will bury your most recent changes in a list which inconveniently sorted and not timestamped. After you've tried the changes out for a while and discovered they're not working, you can't "undo" them without digging digging digging deep in the mess to find and edit/remove them.

I'm running 2 Pi-Holes on my network (for redundancy and high availability) together with Unbound to act as my own recursive DNS resolver. Thus this helps all devices on the network rather than an individual device. You should see all the chatter from the IoT devices attempting to call home!!

@@shadow-wulfThe iot devices ARE the chatter, and it doesn't become "internet chatter" until it leaves your network, which is kinda the point; keep them from getting out / phoning home. You only need one pi hole; two is more "enthusiast" territory, and I doubt you wanna spring for 2 Pis rn, aside from running it on old hardware or an alternative sbc. If you just wanna see all the noise the crap on your network makes, install Wireshark for free; you'll see what he means. Oh, and don't just plop everything on your network via wi fi just cause you're prompted to. I can pretty much assure you your grape Crush and diet Sprite will stay cold w/out your fridge having an internet connection...

We have no guarantee that any of this software works in the manner it is intended. We have no guarantee that the blocking software isn’t itself harvesting data and a one stop data collection device. The nature of the software allows it to monitor everything done on the computer without the need to report on if’s own activities.

The license agreement for Glasswire tells you they have a privacy policy that which describes "how GlassWire and its affiliates collect, use, share and store Subscriber information" but you need to go to a link to read it. Curious, I went to the link and it tells me it no longer exists. I am therefor unsure of what data they use or how, or who their affiliates are but I know they do use it and so do some unknown third parties. Therefore I will not accept such an open ended license agreement. Others mileage may vary.

They can calculate your approxomate location using bluetooth while it scans for nearby devices and any time any external device picks up any of your bluetooth enabled devices that gives them your bluetooth ID which is unique to your device, and an indication of where you've been. So you gotta turn off bluetooth and bluetooth scanning as well.

This will work for a while, but if it cuts into Apples or MS' profits, they will just send all "telemetry" through any open channel. They will identify a feature users really want to have enabled and communicating and just funnel everything through there. This is just a band aid over a gashing wound in our privacy. The real problem is that companies are still allowed to do that and not severely enough punished when they overstep our way to lax rules.

I used BlackIce Defender, and later ZoneAlarm, back in the day on PC and found out my Lexmark printer was phoning home. And it would reinstall its phone home module from the driver software if deleted! Finally had to delete it, then create a directory of the name of the module, then write protect the directory, which effectively blocked the reinstall. It was a highly regarded printer but I never bought another Lexmark product.

What about us Linux users who prefer open source software. Can you tell us about OpenSnitch and if it is a decent tool for this purpose?

In general Linux doesn't collect any user data. However if you install Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome etc those browsers will. Other proprietary software that you install might also collect data. Think of Linux like this, by default its private but some of the services you use or add to the system might not be. Portmaster is a good tool for keeping those apps under control.

Mac users might be interested to know that the App Store has a free mini version of Little Snitch and a subscription model of $1.49/month or 13.49 per year payable thru your Apple account. Leaves me to wonder if there is a program for IPad users and IPhone users.

In the end, you have to pay for a program (usually a free program does something, but not enough) to block other programs that you paid for to avoid that those programs would send and sell your data online. What many people ignore is that some of those programs you use to stop reporting your data, activity, and even more, belong to those who you're trying to avoid like Microsoft, Google, and other kind people like them, and you can't know who is behind some programs developers, who is financing them, and you don't know who you can trust. The world is in some billionaires' hands, and they decide what you have and don't have to do, but stay with the illusion you're free, and no one can touch you, if you don't want. BTW, the science is in those hands, the most important mass media, and many governments too. I'm not making anything up, search for Black rock and Vanguard, and stop trusting newspapers and TV channels. As your search engine is often Google, you know how it works, right? Thanks Naomi.

it is getting harder and harder to have privacy of any kind and having to pay out the yang to get more methods that will be broken soon is not an option. Our current internet is more or less one giant advertisement and we are the product. I remember in the early days just connecting to single computers to talk with the person and send stuff. Paying to use the services to be their product is pretty crappy. I want them to pay me for the rights to sell my information since they are making money off my activity then I should be compensated for giving up my privacy.
