    This came at the right time. I’ve been needing this for weeks. School is out, equipment pool is closed, and my friends live three cities away. I’m as free as a bird, but I’ve been feeling like I can’t take flight. I used to make low quality KZread videos as practice for narrative filmmaking, and I did that stuff alone. Knowing more information now about how things work has made me complacent with grunt work and closed my mind off from creativity. It’s time to break the mold and to get moving! Thank you, I appreciate the talk, and much love to the pup!

    As someone in graduate film school and about to graduate next year, I do agree somewhat with your video. It's tough when you first start because the bar is raised incredibly freaking high and there is a ton of expectation. Hollywood exists for you to make them money. That is the industry you want to be in, if you want to be a director (or filmmaker, yet in the end everyone on set is a filmmaker anyway and I don't believe in a true power on set because your characters and story are the ones with power). It weighs heavy on your heart but you will only push through with passion. If you are passionate about film making you do have to get up and do it but don't force yourself into it. If you really love it and smile when you do it, you're not forcing yourself. Forced films often times turn out bad, its the truth. If you can't connect to the story you are making, why make it? Filmmaking is all about collaboration and as someone who struggles with PTSD, it is tough, but if you surround yourself with collaborators who care about your vision as much as you do, you will create something beautiful. So learn a lot, study the craft respectfully and study the films you connect with so you can go out and create films that are inspired by the films that have connected you. Films that are unique with your voice. Lastly and this is the heartbreaking thing I learned. It takes time to get to the top so have fun in the now, because that is what art is all about. :)

    Amazing video Alex, very inspirational. I am shooting my second short film next weekend actually. My first was last summer, and I am so proud I finished it. It is not perfect, but I have grown so much from it, and I will with this new one too. Every film is new knowledge gained, it is sometimes not fun to think about the fact that the short will probably not be great, but it is invaluable when creating the next one as you gain so much knowledge that is not possible to obtain by watching others tips and mistakes. You do not realize how little you know, until you make your own films. We all have to go thru this to become better, and the process is the biggest thing. If you do not like the process and the countless hours in pre- and post, the stress and lack of sleep and money... filmmaking is not for you. That is the truth. I am split as I want to be a filmmaker, but I also want to make lots of money. I can either do corporate stuff and make money, or create art, but I can not get both, you can not become rich and be an indie-filmmaker, unless you are really lucky. Maybe in the future, but not yet. At least for me. Great video :-)

    To be honest, I had been waiting months or even years to start recording and publishing content on KZread. I had loads of excuses - it was never the right time and I didn't have enough skills, so I was watching more and more videos to become better, but finally, I thought that I would never be better if I didn't create anything, so I've started working on my own videos and here we are... I published my second video this week! 🎉 I know it's still shitty, and there are technical problems, but I'm glad that I'm doing this even that my skills are not perfect and English is not super fluent 🙂 Thanks for that, a little bit different video, Alex! 💪

    Currently making a VR short film for the past year and a half, and I'm STILL in preproduction. The technical limitations have been staggering, but it's all finally coming together as I'm finally uploading characters from Unity. I don't know WHAT I am doing, but the fact that I'm stilling working on this thing means something. I'm get closer and closer to storyboarding everything out. I can see everything in my head. But I suppose the biggest hurdle would be the SFX when I hit post-production.

    Hey Alex, awesome video man. Me personally love the art of making narrative films, yet that seems to be the most difficult way to make money. To me it seems that the only way to really achieve this is to start working as an assistant in the film industry and to work your way up. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

  • @Alexzarfatifilms

    @Alexzarfatifilms

    I don’t think there’s any one way to do it obviously starting as a PA and working your way up is one way but then you filmmakers like Christopher Nolan to just constantly went out in meetings until they got the money to make their first feature film and they killed it. So I think it all depends. If you take something you make to festivals and win awards and network to meet people and jump on other productions you never know.
