On the note of changes causing stress/vocalisation - we went to visit relatives last summer for about ten days, which was the longest we'd been away from the cat since lockdowns started. Our cat was *extremely* quiet when we got her and still doesn't talk all that much, but when we got back from this trip there was one moment where she walked into the living room, stared at us in a way that honestly felt like the cat version of clearing her throat... then opened her mouth and just YELLED for about twenty seconds straight. And then she seemed to consider the matter settled, she'd expressed her displeasure and was happy to continue on as normal.

our cat isn't too much of a talker. She only "talks" when: She is on the floor and wants on the bed She is on the bed and wants to go to the floor She is on the floor, but you are on the bed She wants pets She doesn't want pets Her foodbowl is empty Her foodbowl is full but she hasn't worked that out yet She believes it's feeding time You've woken up and are moving around You've gone to the toilet She wants cuddles She doesn't want cuddles You aren't petting her just right You're petting her purrfectly She wants me to go to bed (She will literally boss me into bed so she can jump onto the bed and lay on me) My partner (her original owner) is next to me and occupying the spot that she might want to occupy at some point in the future My partner isn't next to me and she wants her whole family in the same spot The wrong person is holding her The right person is holding her. She can't find the person she wants to see at this moment in time She has found the person she wants to see She feels like talking to the person she wanted to see She is inside and wants to go outside She is outside and wants to come back in She is inside but thinks that maybe at some point she might want to go outside She wants the backdoor open just to be open, so she can consider if she might want to think that maybe she might want to go outside at point. She's feeling sassy. Other than that she's pretty silent

We've had a similar experience with our well-aged boy. We moved to a new home, and a month or so afterwards we noticed he was vocalizing WAY more than he typically did. We assumed he wasn't comfortable with his new surroundings, but then several months later we noticed him bumbling into walls and other things and figured out he was going blind. We feel so guilty we didn't notice anything sooner. He's 16 now and does so well to be blind...most humans would have given up; He still seems to enjoy his life, as normally as possible, even though he cannot see. I'm sorry for the loss of your good boy, Sue!

Our 18-year-old went deaf about a year ago. And she‘s getting confused about things, for example where she is and what‘s going on. Then she just sits and wails, I‘d describe it as like a peacock cry. My long-suffering colleagues on Teams calls describe it as sounding like a baby. Every time it takes something different to soothe her - just attention, food, a brush, tucking her into the duvet on the bed... she‘s our beloved dotty old lady.

My kitty was quiet as a ghost when we adopted her and her sister litter mate. After a year of adoption one of our kitties was diagnosed with cell cancer and we have to say goodbye to her. After her passing our kitty, starfire, never stops talking. I love it and it generally means she just wants attention or someone to play with since she used to harass her sister and play 24/7. We love her and have supported her through this grief and I like her tiny meows.

But her meows are not very loud, they follow one another rapidly so they almost have the cadence of human speech. I guess the cat just figured that if everyone was vocalizing all the time, she should just join in.

I've also noticed the factor of how socialized they were. Many rescued kittens I've known (from bottle baby upwards of 9 weeks) seem to be very talkative as well, and it makes me wonder if those babies think that's what they're supposed to do. Animals can obviously recognize when we're speaking, so maybe the human-raised cats think "Hm, mom and/or dad talk a lot, maybe I'm supposed to do the same!" and then they start "talking" in their cat ways. It also probably encourages it when we respond in turn with food or affection, or even just a "hey" in return

  • @hockeygrrlmuse

    @hockeygrrlmuse

I wouldn't be surprised if that is a factor, although I have 2 littermates, raised from bottle babies together & only lived apart for a few months in their "teens," and one of them is VERY vocal while the other saves his meows for when he really wants to say something. A little bit nature, a little bit nurture :)

If I close the door, he'll park himself at the door and meow. If I ignore him, he does it for hours. He's got toys and scratching posts, plenty of places to nap and look outside, it's that one spot. He had specific meows for food, treats, to tell us we could close the garage door (he had multiple litter boxes in the garage in addition to one in the house), that we could close the back door onto an enclosed patio, even a unique meow asking where we are because he was lonely.

Yep, the adoption agency told me so. But can't stop trying. Second time several months later tried it again. Thus time just curious. Not angry at the world. One way I knew my girls were sick is they always were very vocal and they stopped vocalizing. I stopped hearing from them on a daily basis. They work really hard to hide illness and problems from us, but when I stopped getting a talkative girl greeting me at the door, we knew something was wrong. Turns out it was stress induced anxiety that stopped them from eating (these are my sensitive girls). Two weeks for one girl and a full month for another and we’re back on track! Vocalizing is a key indicator of health.

I managed to train him a "what's up, man" command so when he starts meowing and I get up with this phrase, he literally leads me to what he needs whether it's a litterbox in need of cleaning, his fave toy, a feeding bowl with its bottom showing or the apartment door that he wants me to open 'cause he heard smth in the corridor and wants to check what's going on there.

@@sethmiller6128 When I adopted one of my cats she was in bad shape but had been in terrible shape. They gave her to me for free. The staff took ages to give her to me because they would talk to me, then tear up and run out the back presumably to have a cry. Like I said I could see she didn't know what she wanted affection-wise, she was so afraid of being patted presumably because she'd been hit. Also I said I was wearing her colours, which was true I was wearing a knit top with gold threaded through it. That caused an immediate rush to the back room, no explanation. I had about 5 different staff members come and talk with me and do the disappearing trick. Because she was such a sad case, they had steeled themselves to have to put her down. I was the only taker. She's adorable but it took 2 1/2 years before she'd purr. Even now she's not a solid purrer, but she does purr. She also licks my hand, nudges me thank you when I feed her. She was hiding under the bed for 4 nights before she came out, I slept on the floor to gain her trust. She's so bonded with me it's a bit unhealthy she gets jealous of the newer cat. He's scared of making her jealous and a bit scared of people still. I'm gradually getting there with him, it will take another year at least. They were very damaged cats. He's still a bit scared of people and doesn't totally trust me yet. Working on it. It's harder not being able to work with him alone but at the same time he wants to bond with another cat. She rejects him and they have fisticuffs with ears down the full bit, but then they happily sleep next to each other. Trauma takes time to heal. (forgot to add the newer cat cries like a baby, he hates closed doors hates them. His crying is getting lesser. But he does it about 3 times in the morning. He is a bit annoying but when you take into account how he's so damaged, you just give a lot of love, and gradually very gradually try some discipline. Like he understands "no". So when he's doing the loud crying I say "no" and refuse to respond to it. So he stops associating success with the loud cries. But to succeed with this you must show masses of love first. Otherwise it's just more trauma. He walks around with his tail held high in a question mark, that's a sign he's happy, same with her. If the tail is down do not discipline. Only ever do gentle discipline and use treats to reinforce good behaviour. Eventually they improve and it's such a joy to experience that. Love your cat, whines and all, and he will come good. Eventually.)

My half-Siamese cat was very food motivated and learned a couple of words. Specifically, he associated "good kitty" and "are you calm" with getting food. I asked him, what do good kitties say/sound like, and he would go from a loud, desperate meow (I called it yowling because... well. Siamese have volume.) to a little chirp. The refrain was "never been calm in his life" lol.

@dustingregg7925 so... I don't have tips for yowling before breakfast/when you get up. Nova would yowl at 2:30 or 3 am sometimes, and I just got up, found him and carried him back to bed with me. He didn't yell so much an hour+ before meal time. I will say that I've observed with my new cat that she will take food or play time almost interchangeably, though, so I would try an intensive play session before bed, and then playing with your cat when you get up, before you feed him. I don't guarantee it will work, but it lines up with principles of cat behavior so ... maybe.

She got used to being out and loved it, so that now as an inside cat, she cries all the time to go out. I try to keep her stimulated with homegrown catnip, toys, window perches, and lots of love and attention to distract her. I even take her outside on a leash but she wriggles out and tries to run away. My kitty is two years old and active. She is bored easily. She follows me around like a dog and has to be involved in every single thing I’m doing. I love it but feel bad because she cries so much to explore outside. My foster kitten is mostly blind, and during the day she doesn’t make a peep. But as soon as the lights go out at night, she talks way too much (and in a very high pitched voice). She wakes me up several times a night. I used to think she was muttering to herself, but my boyfriend and I recently realized that she is echolocating! She does it when something moves, when she’s walking around, or when a door is unexpectedly closed at night. She can see well enough to get by during the day, but she struggles more with sight at night.

She has always been like that from tiny kitten on and it's not annoying or anything, I find it quite cute actually when she "replies", but watching the video I got concerned that she shouldn't be like this? And then the last point came and I was relieved. Because she's checked by the vet regularly, she's quiet and unbothered when we're not home (camera for the win), and I think she's just very expressive =)

My cat will constantly meow when she wants my attention, food, or cuddles, or whatever I had to actually train her to be quiet when she wants food, by ignoring the constant begging meows, and only feeding her at a random point after she’s been quiet for at least 3 minutes. I trained her years ago, and she learned perfectly, so now when she is hungry she will sit and stare at me with the biggest eyes ever(TM) when she really wants me to feed her, only meowing occasionally to remind me that she’s there. The first time she meows and I look up and realize she’s waiting, I just wait a random short time and then it’s food time! The random interval of reinforcement is very important in this training It works well for us, she knows how to communicate in a mostly quiet way and I get alerted to what she needs. She still talks a lot other times, just a very talkative kitty, but this system helps a lot for the food meows with my own little furry angel 💖

Thank you! I will definitely be trying this with my cat! She is generally a very vocal kitty and it's actually so adorable. However, when she's hungry her meows are like listening to nails on a chalkboard. She has no issue when it comes to letting me know she's hungry. If she doesn't sleep in my bed with me, I have to be completely silent when I wake up in the morning or else she'll meow so loudly and incessantly for food the second she hears my voice. Sometimes I just want to gouge out my eardrums because it's that bad lol. This will go on for around three to five minutes before she stops. Hopefully this helps me with my cat a bit. 🙂

I rescued a kitten in March and he just does not stop talking. He's extremely healthy and active, and I know it's boredom and wanting attention, but at some point during the day, I have to put the feather duster down and do some work. Thankfully, one of my older cats has taken on the role of mentor and happily strangles him for a couple of hours, but he gets tired eventually and the noise resumes. I bought a puzzle ball but the next day it was full of ants. I don't want him to lose that kitten energy, but I'd love him to take up a hobby... sailing, knitting, book club... anything.

Just an update. He's now an insanely gorgeous one-year-old and the talking's stopped. He still says hello and let's me know when he's hungry or feeling affectionate, but it's normal levels, not continuous. I think maybe he talked a lot because talking is what saved him. He was abandoned, he kept crying, and because of that he was found and loved. He needed a lot of help back then, but now he's a fully independent young hunter, very sure of himself, and he doesn't need so much attention anymore. Very proud to see what a well adjusted cat he's become.

@@paulas2218 My husband has to get up at about 3am for work, and I snore a bit (like a train lol), so I stay up to let him sleep, then I go to bed when he gets up, as his job is physical and requires concentration, is dangerous if tired, etc. So we've timed our main cat's treat time to be during the night while hubby sleeps, and also, on our enclosed patio, she enjoys going outside for an hour or so during the quiet time of night. I recognise not everyone has an outdoor cat, especially in the USA with lots more wild animals which are dangerous to cats. But here in UK where we are, there are no threats in our small garden (apart from her, catching the occasional mouse lol). I also appreciate that if you let some cats out they will be gone for hours on end - which is where the "treats when you come home" come into play. She comes back cos she knows she gets treats when she's back. Anyway, I'm rambling on here. Point being, if you can manage to associate your "night" time together with a couple of treats/a cuddle session/play session, whatever positive thing it can be, your cat will probably accept it well that you are not sleeping at exactly the same time as hubby, like mine does, because they know there is something enjoyable to come during the later evening which is special to your & his "night time" together - maybe? Worth a shot if you regularly stay up later than your hubby?

My 2-year old rescue whom I've had for just 5 months would not stop meowing. Food and water are always available, we do playtime, he has a perch to watch cat TV, etc. But after I rescued a new kitten that I was planning to just foster, the meowing decreased almost completely. Needless to say, I ended up adopting said kitten, and now they cuddle all the time. 😅❤

Our kitten was the same, we were the first family she had and our neighbours reported she'd cry as soon as we left the house and especially when we came home would be super excited, climb up our legs etc. When we got a second kitty to accompany her she stopped crying when we left and they became really close!

Aww, your cat just wanted someone who could understand catlish. Glad he has a friend who can understand him now!

I’m thinking that my cats wants a friend, he’s had afew other cats in his life but now it’s just us and I can hear him talking as soon as I’m out of the car and he greats me at the door.

Also don't do what I did! A few months ago I had a really long day and decided to try the ignoring bit. It ended working, i think she was confused by it. So she gently pawed at me through the evening for cuddles and affection and it was really refreshing and nice. Except... when I ignore her meow meows now, she paws at me WITH her meow meows. 😅

Sounds like you did something right... So just ignore her if she paws and meows. Only cuddle if it's both cute and quiet I guess 😅

@@fatim0nster It's SO hard because she's just SO cute haha and she's really gentle with her pawing it makes me laugh and ruins it haha I know she meows when she wants something but she also just 'talks'. Like whenever she drinks water she will tell me after, when she walks by, when she looks outside, etc.

@@fatim0nster I can't ignore mine when he paws at me, because he'll eventually progress to using his claws. I have to put him down on the floor, then I can ignore him.

My cat loves to sing me the song of his people. He just meows and sings and sometimes yodels. He’s happy, healthy, young and just needs to make me aware of his presence. Learned to live with his chatty catty 😆
