What game do you find yourself constantly revisiting from the past? EDIT: I just made subtitles for the video, as I've read from many of you that you have trouble hearing my voice. I am SO sorry about that. I made the subtitles so that they match the voice and timing for the most part. I will continue to update it to improve it, but for now, its a great addition to have. Use the regular English caption, not the "auto generated" option. !250 LIKES WOW! !THANK YOU! I want to give a big thanks to everyone that gave my video a chance by clicking on it and watching it. It's my first video essay, and while I'm extremely proud of it, I know I still have much to work on. Reading your comments have truly inspired me to make more content, so thank you

    A) I watched it without subtitles and had no problems. I can see how some might, moreso due to music/voice volume levels. But I did it just to say your accent is perfectly fine by me. B) Super Mario Galaxy is definitely epic. Lately I've been thinking about getting my Wii back out to play it for the first time in like a decade. C) For me it's probably Warhammer 40k plus the add-on that makes Necrons playable. And I was a bit later to the party on this one, but definitely Dwarf Fortress. Nier: Automata must also be mentioned, even if I've yet to go back and do a second complete play-through. Similarly to Outer Wilds, I'm waiting until I forget enough of it for said play-through to be worthwhile.

"I still wish I could play this game again. But I can't." It's such a bittersweet sentiment that we all have with Outer Wilds. Bitter because it's a plain fact: you can only play Outer Wilds once, and it will never be the same again. Sweet because that's why the game is so incredible. Without the emotional investment it forces you to take it would not be so stellar.

When I say that, people always ask me "why? why can't you play it again if it's as good as you say" but I never find the right words to explain it. In simple terms, the whole point of the game is the experience of discovering what's behind of this wholesome universe. But you only realize that in the last few moments of the game, that's what makes it so special. Like life itself Don't know if I made any sense hah

Once the mystery is solved, you can go back and analyze it but you will never be as engrossed as you were when wearing your Sherlock Holmes cosplay outfit. Think of the video games you could play again. Now simply, how many of those games would you not skip dialogue, not rush through tutorials, etc. And realizing that sums up pretty much every game. First cut is always the deepest.

I see it so often. Minecraft in particular. People blame some update or another for "ruining that feeling they once had while playing it." They recognize correctly that they're not feeling that anymore. Just not why. I always think back to the Owlk staring at the projector. Just reliving those memories of what was over and over and over. He doesn't start moving until the projector is turned off.

Using Minecraft as a point of comparison is such a unique take. I have grown wary of games that rely too heavily on procedural generation because, to me, it means a lack of humanity and thoughtful design in the way Mobius Digital designed Outer Wilds. That’s why my favorite Minecraft content were the “plot worlds” where builders had a limited amount of space to pack in as much detail as possible.

  • @StrictlyMediocre

Very true. Nowadays, Minecraft doesn't hit the same. But back then, when I was young and had just started the game, making those discoveries for the first time were unlike anything I'd ever experienced. The proudness I felt when I found a mineshaft after spending hours mining was such an incredible feeling. No other game has been able to give me that feeling until Outer Wilds. Solving puzzles and finally being able to enter the area I've been wanting to get into gave me that same feeling in full.

Oh boy I reached the end now and I'm almost tearing up. This game obviously holds a special place in my heart, and I know that it is about letting go, but I've always had a hard time doing just that. Nowadays I can't help but associate this game with the intention I had to have my ex play through it, after having watched her play and stumble through the Bioshock trilogy. She was never a gamer, but she was passionate about learning and playing them, and I was so happy to be able to share my passion with her. Other than that, she really was the girl I had always dreamt of, and I genuinely would have wanted nothing more than keep loving her for the rest of my life...but then she broke up with me, and I'm still lost and agonizing to this day. Hopefully one day I will finally learn to let go, and if I do, I will always cast my mind back to this game. Sorry for the ramble, now I'm actually crying

@@clvr51 Damn dude :( You don't have to be sorry one bit. I was about choked up reading this. Letting go and moving on can be such a hard thing to do. Much like the game, you probably didn't want your relationship to end. I imagine you have so many things you wish you could tell her, so many things that you wanted to do different, but as difficult as it may sound and be, you got to find the will to move on. Heartbreak is a tough part in life. It's going to continue to be rough but it won't be for long believe me. It takes sadness to know what happiness is. There are plenty of other people in life to move on to. Maybe they won't be exactly like her, but you could find someone that makes you just as happy, or even happier than your ex. I say this having experienced heartbreak. Once you find a way to get back up and out there, you're going to be a better person than you were, believe me man :) Also, who’s to say you can’t show Outer Wilds to someone else? :) You can save it for the next special person in life! But for real, outer wilds drastically changed the way that I game. I used to spends hundreds of hours grinding away at menial tasks in the same two or threes games to reach empty goals that didnt really matter. They didn't give me any new experiences or any real sense of achievement. It was momentary satisfaction of checking something off the list to move onto the next shallow goal. I was almost too bored to start playing new games, so I just stuck with games that I knew, and used them simply as a means to pass time and kill boredom The year that I played outer wilds, I played more games than I ever had before, specifically Indie games. Outer Wilds was such a phenomenal and impactful experience that now I crave new experiences. I can't stop playing new games, looking for new discoveries and hoping that one day, I'll stumble across a random game and give it a chance, just like I did with Outer Wilds. It truly reignited my joy and passion for gaming, and I really can't wait to see what Mobius Digital does next

@@my_username_was_already_taken Haha thank you!!! That's exactly the experience I had with Outer Wilds! I've started to play games from all genres, trying new things out of my comfort zone. Gone are the days of playing old games again for the third or fourth time. Thanks for taking the time to comment! Glad you enjoyed the video!

If Outer Wilds gave you this perspective, Before your eyes will ad that extra cherry ontop. I'm seriously hoping you do play Before Your Eyes. Thank you for hitting me in the emotions in like 5 minutes of the video. It might give you the perspective that it is the same game as Outer Wilds in a different skin , But ya , just.. its great. Just tried to like this video a second time after finishing the final part and it’s funny: I can’t like this video ever again, but that’s okay, because I can go on knowing that that’s all I can do in this life - live it once and move on; I will never watch this video ever again but I will certainly try to recreate it one day - trying to tell our story through the Outer Wilds is what life is all about. It’s crazy out there. Want to hear my adventure through life? Well, it all started just before I fell into a geyser - tumbling to the bottom… spotting some writing and then… dying. Game Over. And then… on my second play-through, after hearing music coming from the planets above, I got a space suit and immediately started wondering if it worked underwater… What did that writing say? And the answer to that question… may surprise you. I mean - only if you’ve never played the game or learned second hand already… When will I finish writing this comment? The answer to that question… won’t surprise you. (Never: the second answer is.) (Unrelated, older, sentient beings: first answer is.) (Where did They come from?) (Why am I still using brackets?) (Who knows!?)

On that note, I must ask: have you played the DLC of Outer Wilds? If you haven't, I strongly recommend you do as it's equally brilliant as the main game, but also reinforces the points you make in the essay (without spoiling anything)

From my boredom and numbness when playing videogames, to craving the feelings i used to feel when playing minecraft and games alike, to the circumstances of me finding outer wilds in the first place. Wonderful. On a very different note, I've spent a few hours looking for the song you used at 14:44. I would love if you could tell me what you used for this, the whole remix feels special. This is more of a socio-economical issue, honestly. Culture of consumption has teached us that if there's a media product you really enjoy, there's almost always more of it. This is the same reason why popular franchises are drowned in endless sequels, prequels, remakes, reboots, remasters, etc etc, since it's very profitable and much cheaper to expand on already existing basis instead of creating something fundamentally new. This is why movies has stopped being art and became a product in the past, with very few large studios actually expanding and innovating the industry. Games are less affected as of now, mostly due to a sprawling indie market, so don't let magnates to consume indie developers by allowing them to be self-sustained by income directly from the players.

Play Tunic. It's another game that you can only meaningfully experience once, so avoid spoilers. The message of the game is not as deep as in OW, but it has a unique way of evoking feelings that I could only get playing an adventure game in the 90s as a kid, which is just not possible by playing those old games, maybe not even the ones that I didn't have the opportunity to play back then.

When I was in primary school a gpod quarter of my wakimg hours was spent on my old-ass ipad playing Minecraft pocket edition. I remembered the update that let you pick up items in creative mode, and the update that brought the end to the game. After a while I slowed down. I found other things to do. More recently I found a channel that had this really interesting style with a fascinating creator. I think he had autism, like me. After looking back and watching the backlog of content he had, and sieving some of the collaborative content he'd done, I noticed a recent video where he said he was unwell. The October of my first grade My friend was hospitalized wrh brain cancer. He died December of the following year. I never really play Minecraft anymore. I guess I was just pissed, with the Microsoft port and all. I really am a soulless heel
