Relationships make a difference!

Hello. Here's the quandary: You bring up salient points, but for me I'm not hearing an alternative approach. My band is a baby band. We are considering a waterfall release. It's time to get our music out there. BUT..... When we first released our first single (not at all knowing how to do it), it was like yelling in an empty hallway of your dad's office, on a Saturday when no one was working. No one was there, no one was listening. So, if we "shouldn't pitch to Spotify playlists", won't we just be releasing to no one all over again? Appreciate the tutorials you're giving, and hope you get my question.

When your followers dump will they be more than they were before you got the placement? When your monthly listeners drop, will they be more than what you had before the placement? Surely some will stay? Also, when the followers go up, so long as you have a follow up plan on how to keep them, won't you at large be left with more fans as you retain at least some of them? Idk how many fans you'll get at the end of that expirement of course but that's almost like saying don't say yes to a feature with a big artist because you may fall off. If you can retain the fans and keep releasing good music won't you be better at least compared to how you started. Idk😂

Appreciate you saying that! I personally despise that condescending tone as well and don't pay attention to 99% of the "music marketing" content that's out there as a result. My view is we're all artists trying to figure out what works together. I just want to share my experience with that hope that it will be helpful.

Thanks for this Tom! Yep, I've been through it! It really sucked for me, a small artist, seeing a spike in plays and thinking "finally!" until, it all came crashing down and the realization of bots... tried the paid playlist too which again a waste of money (for me anyway). I released a new song earlier this week, didn't make it to an editorial playlist this time around. New tunes in the works and a second album coming next year. Working with you was awesome though dude, will be reuniting in the new year when funds and songs are ready! :)

Great video. I agree with most of what you said. However, for me getting on a playlist via Submithub wasn’t a total waste of time. Sure, listeners went up at first and after being on for a while, my song was removed. I expected the listeners to go down. But in doing so, I learned things: what my genre might be, what being on a playlist is like, what similar artist are like etc. I look at it as just a small piece of the marketing pie. Obviously, creating great songs and content are the best ways to grow. That’s my opinion anyway. Thanks.

This is a good point and something I likely overlooked since it's been so long since I first started releasing music and wandered around trying to determine where my music fit too. If an artist isn't clear on where their music fits, I can see how something like SubmitHub might help to bring clarity to that, but I can also see how it might be detrimental if an artist heads down the wrong genre path. For me, I guess I just believe it's best to work to identify that on our own and work to associate ourselves with similar artists and genres through our own artist playlists and collabs with others. I appreciate you sharing this slightly opposing point of view!

Great video and insights 🙌I have noticed a new thing as well: I would be randomly checking my Spotify for Artist dashboard and see a spike in the "people listening now" live indicator with a large and increasing number of people currently listening and the next day I would see that one of my songs got randomly added to a user playlist for a day (or maybe even less) without me even pitching to that playlist in the first place. It would show a "mountain-shape" of streams like in your video which I think is super annoying and detrimental to my profile but I have no ways to combat that. Seems like it is like a bait to reach out to them and pay to be on the playlist. Did that also happen to you or anyone?

Yeah, I've seen this a lot unfortunately. You're spot on. It's a bait tactic to try to get you to pay to be on their playlist. I don't know of an effective way to combat this yet. The best way I can think of is to generate enough momentum such that that influx of data doesn't have an outsized impact on your profile. Of course, that takes time. Until we're outpacing that sort of thing, the best I think we can do is ignore it and hope it doesn't happen too frequently. Also be mindful of who you collaborate with to ensure they're not pitching to stuff without you knowing.

Yes 100%. The bot people put you on the playlist as a form of advertising also and then people will also see the playlist in your playlist section making people think you used it and it’s a way of spreading the bad playlist around. I was targeted several times and got a strike on my account for this when I did not initiate it.

Great video! My artist stats are quite similar to yours. One thing I've noticed is that the "Fans also Like" section has changed a lot. I've checked this out on Reddit, and it's a hot topic. It doesn't seem to recommend good matches like it used to. Some folks I know put a lot of effort into building that section. My artist has a decent following on social media, and we get a good amount of organic traffic driving to Spotify. About 20% of our new song campaign streams comes from good Facebook ads that are converting around $0.14, and we're on mid-sized playlists in our specific subgenre with good artists that sound similar. All our data looks good, but the "Fans also Like" section is suggesting inactive artists or even some artists with fewer than 100 monthly listeners. What would you recommend to fix this issue?

This is a tough one. I've noticed some oddities in Fans Also Like too. You're definitely not the only one. Since it sounds like you're doing a good job of pushing ads and organic content to your artist profile, another tactic I might think about is collaborating with similar artists whose fans you'd like to access. Also try to connect and engage with those similar artists on social media. Fans Also Like looks outside of Spotify for SEO overlap as well, so that can play a role too.

When you mentioned that you're considered for editorial at a 45% popularity score, where did you get that information? I've always assumed they consider artists at around 30% because I did some research, and I've noticed that similar artists to mine have been featured on editorial playlists, and their artist popularity scores usually fall between 25% to 45%, with many of them hovering around the 30% mark. Or are you suggesting that the song itself needs to achieve a 45% popularity score before it's taken into consideration after its release date? I was actually referring to the artist's overall popularity score. For instance, if I pitch a song and my artist's popularity score is at 30%, it seems more likely that the song will be reviewed before its release date for potential inclusion on an editorial playlist.

Spotify and Soundcloud need to stop posting on the page how many streams, followers (Soundcloud) and monthly listeners an artist has. It's no one's business other than the artist and it does effect how people perceive your music.

Tbh when I "kinda" like a song and notice the artist only has like 1k monthly listeners, I tend to give him a chance and check if there's something else I like in their catalog. Something I wouldn't do to a big artist. So it can actually be helpful

What I gathered from this video is that as an upcoming artist without a big Spotify audience, I should just focus on other ways to get my music heard and not bother with anything related to Spotify, except releasing music on it? I've released two studio albums and pitched a song from both of them through Spotify for Artists, thinking it was gonna do anything, but ended up really bummed out when Spotify didn't add me to a single playlist. I thought the curators didn't like my music, but it's kind of comforting to learn that it was never gonna happen anyway. Thanks for the tips!

Thanks for this comment. I think your general takeaway is correct. I believe the primary two things to focus on for every artist starting out is to release as much music as possible and create as much content as possible. I always get pushback on this, but if you can release a song every Friday and post a Reel/Short/TikTok every single day, you'll be in the 0.001% of artists within a year because you will have just done so much more "training" and testing than everyone else. You'll be so much better at your craft and you'll have a bigger catalog than most too. I would just make sure to pitch to Spotify every time, not to necessarily get on playlists, but to make sure all your followers get your new song in their Release Radar. Outside of that, focus on music and content. I truly believe it's that simple. It's just a lot of work.

​​@yes! Because you can only pitch one song at a time on Spotify for artists. So let's say you'll release a 10 song album, release 1 single a week in the previous 5 weeks so they can all feature on your followers release radar, then release the other five songs once a week after the album comes out, for the same purpose. Release them at the same time on YT. Even if you can't afford some cool music videos, you can make make a visualiser or a lyric video. Make vertical videos for some of them so you can share them on YT shorts, Tiktok and Reels. If the music is good, with the amount of work you'll be putting, people will eventually notice it

Yeah you pretty much hit the nail on the head with this comment! I'd release as much as I could. Try to pitch every release to Spotify so it shows up on Release Radar for your followers, but outside of that, no playlist pitching. Just make and release as much music as you can.

Well I have been mostly a listener on spotify so far. In that I might have a weird kind of approach to it but I mostly end up picking new artists through either my monthly playlist or other playlists of either artists I like and want to hear more artists like them or genre playlists to fit moods. I then add songs I like to my playlists of that and tend to follow the artists if their genre and vibe is really good, though the follow really never does much of anything because Spotify is really terrible at letting you know new releases of artists you follow in contrast to big names releases.

I also had bots attack me without consent. The bots I had recently I did not pitch or pay for. So that concerns me greatly. The ones I pitched to on different channels were organic and it resulted me with many listeners ongoing for many months who added it to personal playlists.

Yeah, this is a tactic I see a lot of scam companies using to try to drum up business. I'd recommend focusing on balancing that out by sending traffic via ads or organic content. You might be able to combat the bot traffic that way.

Also yeah I did get a lot of diverse listeners on playlists and genre is an evolving process. But it gets the algorithm going and eventually the followers will develop this ways. I did get a lot of adds and follows this way. So I’m having a herd time really agreeing with this.

@@natrixx920 The best one is yougrow. They're not bots. I also use groover and other sites as well. And yes there is a cost for all marketing. However there are also bot scams and I've been scammed before. So unfortunately I'm not trying out anything new now.

Thank you for the incredibly kind words and for the willingness to share a differing opinion! I had some early successes with getting on Discover Weekly as a result of playlisting as well, but the issue I have with it is those results were never reliable or repeatable, only lucky. It also gave me no lasting advantage as an artist. Once that data fell off, it never came back, and I developed no lasting fans from the playlist itself. Plus, Spotify's algorithmic understand of my music as a result of traffic getting pushed from that playlist was not accurate and only harmed my growth in the long run.

Well, strange thing is, that some of those playlisters just choose your song and they place it on a playlist with many followers for one or two days - without pitching! The just want to get your attention and hope that you will contact them to put your music again on their playlist - but this time - you have to pay. You cannot protect yourself from such people. You just get those huge amounts of streams - and cannot do anything! In my case they chose a very experimental track and put it with pop, rock, lo-fi music... crazy.

we're supposed to be scared of being playlisted by this guy because it'll result in a spike of listenership and then the spike might fall after the playlist is up.. but i mean, "no shit sherlock" right, that's life? who cares what the data looks like in your backdoor artist portal that fans don't even have access to? This guy has yet to convince me why I care about that.. 20 years ago, if you had a hit on the radio for 6 months, and then it was off the radio in 6 months, were people saying "stop, don't get on the radio, you'll have a spike in listeners for 6 months and afterward.. ITLL DROP OFF, DONT DO IT DONT DO IT THE DATA WILL LOOK BAD THE NUMBERS OMG WILL LOOK SO BAD".. it's like, no, get me on the radio, for 1 day, for 1 year, it's better than 0

I got burned with a bad playlist promotion 2 years ago, my profile is only now starting to look normal again. I didn't even bother uploading much after that because my releases did terribly with all those fake followers :/

Spotify specifically says they don't use past listeners as a criteria. Do you have a source for this 'popularity score' info?

They may not use individual listeners, but they certainly use behavior data just like every other platform. Popularity scores for every artist and every song are available through Spotify's public API in their developer panel. Here's a simple tool that pulls some of that data 👉🏻 artistxray.com.

I think you gave pretty good insighst specially throught the end to understand only bots will listen to DYI artists. But if you have to run ads for people to llsten to your music wouldn't it be the same? In the end you'll be paying spotify, who doens't pay almost anything to artiist back in streaming. Also, there's no ( or very unlikely) DIY artists who will get through the noise without financial investiment. I only got my BBC radio plays via PR.

I think the major problem is when artists ONLY pitch to playlists. I agree with Andrew Southworth that playlisting only makes sense once you’re getting algorithmic traffic, other than that, ads will always be far more effect long term💯

@@tomdupreeiii I’m leaning towards budgeting heavily and working up to an ad spend of consistent $50+ a day Seems to really have a solid impact on everyone I see really gassing the ads, still a firm believer that there’s a certain budget point where the traffic pretty inevitably trips the algorithms. Seems to be around the 75-100 a day mark

100% agree with this. $10 per day is great for generating stable traffic and growing that follower base, but $50 per day or more seems to be what it takes to reliably hit the algorithm on a consistent basis in my experience. If you can couple $50 per day with great organic content, regular releases, and good primary artist collabs, that's a winning system in my book!

@@tomdupreeiii yeah it really becomes a how much can you afford to spend game, when im in between releases i do $15 CAD a day which really has its benefits On releases I do $25 a day but next year I might be bumping that up to 30 now im passed the 1000 mark and have a good list of countries to target but we’re gonna see how this last release tomorrow pans out for the month and go from there💯

I see this all the time. My best advice is to stop doing any of that stuff if you haven't already. Focus solely on creating great organic content, releasing music regularly, running ads, and collaborating with similar artists who have a similar fanbase to the one you are trying to cultivate. It will take time, but slow and steady will win the race and help Spotify's algorithmic understanding of you improve.

I'm not really a fan. I think it suffers from the same problem as every other playlist platform, which is it just doesn't lead to long-term listeners and is way more time spent than it's worth.

This is pretty obvious I guess , but really is it any different to any record release years ago?...A single comes out, it gets promo, it rises up the chart with sales and radio plays, then it disappears off the radar, ...you do a new single and around it goes again, ...from this you gain few loyal fans who buy more of your albums and look for your gigs...releasign music with view to getting continual never ending stream is unrealistic isnt it ?

Totally understand the argument here, and there is absolutely some truth to what you're saying. A natural ebb and flow of engagement is and always has been a normal thing. As I stated in the video, any data set is going to have this feature. But with playlisting, I've consistently seen an almost complete removal of engagement when an artist relies on playlists and their song gets pulled. On top of that, there are no genuine fans gained in the process. That's the big one. With "traditional" releases over the years, an artist may have disappeared from the forefront of the public eye between releases, but they gained a ton of loyal fans when the fire was burning hot. Playlisting doesn't do that. It's all downside, no upside.

@@tomdupreeiii Hey Tom, yeah sure I understand that, I offer playlisting as a part of what I do for new artists, though its only a part of the wider sharing vehicle. I guess the issue it that playlisting is a such massive thing right now, and I dont see it going away anytime soon, so maybe artists need to treat it with some caution, though I di think they can still pick up genuine fans along the way that will go onto to support them in other ways....always good to chat ;-)

Pitching don't work for me .

I just ask my friends to put my new songs on their playlists for a month and give them like 5-10 bucks. I get like 100-1000 streams on most of them during that month and it brings more algorithmic streams around 1,000 in that same month. More playlist ads and streams.

ok dude, maybe ad work in england, us, australia, but i live in poland and ads do shieet. it;s not worth to dump 20 $ for 3 listeners. indepedent playlists are only way to generate streams.

Obviously I can't speak to precisely how things are in Poland because I don't live there, but I've run ads in Poland for many artists with good results. I also know that playlists simply aren't generating lifelong fans, regardless of location. Streams, yes. Fans, no.

@@tomdupreeiii thanks for answer, this gives me hope and bring me to conclusion that it could be something wrong with my campaign. I use minimum day budget, but still if its good it should work, even with short budget.

Hi, I'm from Poland as well.... didn't get great results from ads either. But, I still think that great song will make its way up eventually, whatever the way.

I don't think your point is strong enough to title the video "Stop. Pitching. To. Spotify. Playlists." i know ton of people who gained a good following doing what you said they shouldn't.

Respectfully, how is it easier to get straight ones only, than ones then a 100, then back to two (double 1) then 100 then 1 again. Why not have peaks? Why is it healthy to consistently have low streams? Surely a hit now and then won't hurt. Maybe one will be a Mega hit and bring In a consistent audience to drop music for. Think it's better raise your head above water once in a while and shout of you want people to know you than to stay at the bottom of the ocean

I hadn't connected the dots on that yet, but I think you're absolutely right.

Distrokid and Amuse accused me of Fraud and removed songs quite literally placed on Editorials. So, I am afraid it aint so simple. Spotify bots their own playlists in spades. Take a look at Lo Fi lists and many other niche genres like piano or study focus etc. You'll see -- no kidding -- like 100s of accounts with no followers, 100s of thousands of listeners, all from Editorial, and that are not even claimed or verified pages (so no way to pitch) So my guess is they whitelist their own stuff, or Sony, or Epidemic-- whatever, and now that Editorials are Personalized too, if you get on and hit with their first party bots, you're screwed. Amuse even confirmed they could see my song ACTIVELY ON AN EDITRORIAL and didn't help. So, sorry Tom. Nope!

Really great video -- with no real actual help for those of us who are (or have clients who are) 100k Followers or less. What about them? This video seems to basically seem to say, "Good luck and thanks for all the fish -- but you don't exist" and while I appreciate that the algorithm may see it that way, I can very much tell you that we do exist.

Sorry but you are wrong , Spotify only cares for famous small artists we have small playlists! Who cares about release radar? To take 5 streams? From Spotify only deserve Radio playlist nothing else!

In my mind it's not about who Spotify "cares" about. It's about the healthiest options for growth as a small artist.

I think SubmitHub is a bit of a grey area. Apparently, it is good for smaller genres which might mean fewer streams but more followers.
