Stop Mouth breathing in children by Patrick McKeown

No child should persistently breathe through an open mouth. It's not harmless. Mouth breathing is probably one of the worst habits that any child can develop. We know that between 25 to 50% of studied children are persistently breathing through an open mouth, both during wakefulness and during sleep. No child reaches their full genetic potential if they are using their mouth to breathe. Why? Find out in this video created by Patrick McKeown, Buteyko Clinic founder and instructor to thousands of adults and children.

Mouth Breathing in Children
Buteyko Educator Patrick McKeown
The physiologic breathing mode in the human being is nasal, regardless of age. Any factor leading to the upper airway (UA) obstruction causes nasal breathing to be replaced by mouth breathing, among which mechanical events, allergic and non allergic inflammatory diseases.
However, even after these mechanical factors are removed, MB continues in most cases due to patient’s mouth breathing habit.
The mouth breathing syndrome is characterized by a set of signs and symptoms, which may be present in subjects who replace an adequate and efficient nasal breathing mode by the mouth for a period equal or superior of six months.
To identify the prevalence of mouth breathing in children at primary school ages from 6-9 years, researchers in Portugal examined 496 answered questionnaires from parents. It was found that 56.8% of children in this study breathed through their mouths.
In a randomized sample of the town's population (23,596 inhabitants). 370 children randomly selected. A clinical assessment carried out. 55% of the children involved in the study were found to be mouth breathers.

Patrick McKeown, THANK YOU beyond words for sharing this. I wish no one else (esp beginning w/ an innocent child’s age) would have to endure a path of senseless misery but instead be prevented w/ getting the info out. I’m going to share my thoughts (I’ve shared also w/ individuals below as well - that their stories touched my heart). I TOTALLY agree w/ U, or maybe "they"know & don't want to tell us so we will keep falling apart & have to keep coming back & going from "a to z" doctors/dentists (not to mention mental professionals). I didn’t used to be a cynical person, but I'm now 58 & so sick and tired OF being sick and tired &8& on THIS nightmare of a merry-go-round, trying to diligently get the answers in order to have relief & some form of a normal life. I want to get on a roof top & shot this out & add “Please stick w/ ur gut, when comes to your children or yourself”. I've been researching all this for several days now, & I'm in such disbelief that none of my doctors or dentists have mention such things to me. That said - here’s one example: all the $$$$ money, I've spent on my mouth (teeth) could probably buy a Mercedes. BY being a mouth breather = (All the teeth pulling b'c of overcrowding &/or cavities) crowns & root canals to then have to be pulled b'c of decay. My last expense $1000 has been a partial that l'm trying to learn how to live with. So YES, I'm smh w/ disgust for the simple fact THAT the information THAT could BE saving lives & keeping one’s not having to live a life w/ the misery of (what for me is turning into an endless) domino effect/ vicious cycle of health issues for so many - hasn’t been said in the largest masses possible, when it’s been known since the 1800’s (like from George Catlin sharing in his book “Shut Your Mouth and Save Your Life”.) Sorry for my long rant.

Understandable comments @girlbamberg. It sad that so many of these useful alternatives to surgical intervention were ignored or just not even considered in the past. We are seeing positive improvement but the information needs to get out to more of the general public.

I’m 17 and have been mouth breathing for the past 11 years. When I was 6 me and my family were at a hotel and me and my brother were playing around with my dad and he threw us on the beds. My brother was fine. When my dad threw me however, it knocked the air out of me. It’s been 11 years and I still remember how hard it was to breathe in that moment. I have been mouth breathing ever since. I can breathe through my nose. However, often when I keep my lips sealed and breathe only through my nose i have a hard time breathing after a while. This video really helped. Thanks so much!

Thank you for the video! My 20-month-old son has been mouth breathing for maybe more than 6 months. His pediatrician said she didn't find anything abnormal with his tonsils and no treatment is needed. But he's been sleeping poorly and I don't want this become a habit. Should I look for help from ENT? ANY SUGGESTIONS? THANKS!!

Agree 💯. Why didn’t any Gp, dentist or sleep apnea clinic told me about this when I complained about my child’s mouth breathing and snoring . It was considered normal until I myself found out about the scary impacts of it to my child. Professionals who deal with children from young age should be trained to help children or guide them to get help .

Completely agree Indu Rathnayake, If this was taught in schools we would likely see a big reduction in kids' sleep apnea, snoring and much more, with better craniofacial development of their jaws and faces. Too many in the medical establishment aren't aware of it.

Great video! Just wondering my almost 2 year old is breathing through his nose whilst he sleeps (most of the time), but with his mouth open, do you know if this is a cause for concern? It does look like his teeth are together but everywhere I've read said the mouth should be closed. He does seem to breath through his mouth during the day, maybe 50% of the time, especially when he's engaged in physical activity so not sure whether he needs to see someone. Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi Max. Thank you for your interest in our method. We do recommend that the child strats with the exercises from 5 years and upwards, as it is difficult to teach children below that age. "Always Breathe Correctly" is a good book parents can start reading to their children from 3 upwards to teach them about the importance of nasal breathing: www.buteykoclinic.com/books/.

What about if the child is still breastfeeding? My daughter is 14 months but breastfeeds when she goes to sleep. She breaths through her nose but her mouth is always in the feeding/suckling position while she’s sleeping so she doesn’t rest her tongue on the roof of her mouth.

Is the way to correct this with nasal surgery to be able to breath better through the nose?

  • @ButeykoClinicInternational

    @ButeykoClinicInternational

    3 жыл бұрын

Hi Monica, even after the surgery you could still have problems unless you make corrections to your breathing patterns. To decongest the nose please check out the video on how to unblock the nose in five minutes. After each exercise rest for a minute and repeat the exercise 5-6 times until the nose is decongested. To decongest the nose, the breath hold must be at least 30 seconds to be effective: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ppuhrauwhdTOm8o.html If you can unblock the nose using this technique and your nose remains unblocked for 1 minute after practising this exercise then the Buteyko Method would work for you. I keep breathing through my mouth and I'm 16, it's frustrating. My nose gets stuffy and now it is a habit to breathe through my mouth I have no idea if I have rhinitis or something. Also, breathing through the nose and talking is difficult. I'm scared that if I seal my mouth with fuct tape then I may suffocate.
