STOP jumping up!

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

This video goes over some simple exercises on how to teach your dog to stop jumping on you!
Remember! Dogs jump for a reason! It is either to get your attention, they are over aroused or stressed, or to acquiesce to you (when the dog tries to get to your mouth to lick it)
Tips:
1-Teach your dog what you want them to do instead of jumping up FIRST
2- Don't reinforce jumping up with attention
3- Proof by creating situations your dog will want to jump up in, so that the dog generalizes the behavior.
4- Prevent jumping when you are not in the mood to train your dog, by having your dog on leash or in his pen

That puppy is so adorable! To everyone who doesn't get it; once the puppy understands he's supposed to stay on the ground, you fade out the clicks and treats. Eventually you get to the point where the reward for staying put is just the greeting itself, and perhaps verbal praise or getting petted. You don't stay dependent on the clicker and treats for the rest of the dog's life. So many people think that you'll always need to keep rewarding every few seconds.

I love this video. I was having the hardest time teaching my dog to stop jumping, because everyone wanted to always pet him regardless of what I said. This technique will still let people show affection towards my dog, but in a much better way. I almost considered a prong collar since I was just so confused as to what I could do since the general population refused to listen to me. Luckily, this video came in time! Thank you so much. Don't know how you don't have your own TV show yet.

I love people who train like you. You are truly a Blessing to the canines and to anyone who watches your videos. God Bless you for sharing and helping to improve the treatment of animals. Love how you squeeled like an excited child and the fearful dog petter demo is also very helpful in teaching dogs not to react the wrong way to human emotions. Children often evoke excitement and bad behaviors in their dogs then parents wrongfully/harshly punish the dog for responding in a normal dog way.

@tehrenberg No, if you think it terms of desirable and undesirable. YOU decide what behaviors you like. Just like jumping on the couch. ANOTHER important fact is that the no jumping up exercise is NOT GOOD for shy dogs! Because you want to encourage the dog to interact with people, and if they jump you can work on it later, at least they WANT to interact with someone.

one of your best videos, and I don't say that lightly!! if I only I had had this video 2 years ago, Holly was a nightmare for jumping up, she would do it ALL the time and do what I called "bopping" I would try and put a leash on her and she would launch at my face and hit my jaw a few times with her head!! she would do it over and over again, in the end after much training she is almost 100% with it, but she still jumps when she is scared but the excited jumping has more or less stopped.

@kikopup great video! I totally agree about the shy dog thing. Jackson is pretty shy when it comes to new people, never aggressive, barky or biting or anything, just shy. He's weary about new people petting him, and would prefer to go and sniff them but wants to be ignored until he gets to know the person better! He loves you forever once he meets you once or twice so I don't discourage his excitement and jumping just because it doesn't happen very often... it actually shocks me when he doesit

Love the video! Great ideas. If possible, would you show what to do when there are more people coming in, including kids, and perhaps someone coming in with a dog to visit, and bigger dogs who are very excitable. I realize that things are always different when you are video taping. And this obviously works with these dogs. I'm also wondering if there is an energy that people bring with them when they come into the room, as she tends to do this more with some than with others?

@kikopup Thanks for saying this, because this is what my instincts told me, and why I didn't try to stop her (and maybe even encouraged her). Two years later, I am working on some self control, with OTHER people, not me. I still like it, and she only does it as a means of communication. For instance, when I come home after leaving her, no jumping - if I return after leaving her with someone else, she jumps up like, "Oh thank God you came back!!".

The clicker is an actual tool that looks like a box with a metal plate inside that you push to make a consistent clicking noise. The sound is consistent and can be made instantly so the dog always knows that that specific sound is associated with good behavior (make sure you "charge" your clicker first which is shown in another vid). I found mine for $2 at Petco

Hey Kiko, I just adopted a 2.5 yo American bulldog mix. He's pretty much the most perfect dog, except for his one flaw: Jumping. He's 75 lb, and only jumps when people come in the front door. I tried to clicker train, but the clicker would give me migraines, so I use a vocal cue ("Good!") in place of a click. Since he doesn't jump up when excited like the puppy in the video (in fact, he automatically sits since I make him sit before playing), how would I go about reinforcing the behavior I want in a similar situation? Would I skip straight to the proofing stage, and walk through the door while putting treats on the ground? I'm not sure how well that would work. Whenever anyone comes over, I keep him in a sit/stay (both of which he has down perfectly) until he's calmed down enough to greet them calmly. This doesn't work when I'm the one coming into the house, though. My main problem is that I have a pain disorder (RSD), and him jumping on me often causes a bad flare, which makes me zone out for a few moments, which messes up my timing and makes it difficult to reinforce the good behavior correctly, and I don't have anybody else who would be willing to let him jump on them for training purposes. He's in training to be in training to be a service dog (aka still doing basic obedience), and will likely be able to take and pass the CGC in a couple of months. Perhaps less. After that he'll have his In Training vest, and will be doing public access work. While he has yet to jump on anyone in public, I'm worried he may develop that habit, which is a big no-no for a service dog. I'd really appreciate any advice you or any of your viewers can give me. He's a truly incredible dog, but he's not aware of his own strength, and occasionally draws blood with his jumping, even though I keep his nails well clipped and filed. Any help that can be given is greatly appreciated. Your videos have been a total god-send. Please keep doing what you've been doing. You're one of my Real Life Heroes for doing this. Cheers, Lindsay

@azmauigirl You know the problem with youtube is that I cant have other people in the videos unless they sign... sigh.. the world is a stupid place sometimes... Sometimes putting a baby gate up, where you greet the guests, toss your dog treats for being calm, then when your guests have calmed down and so has the dog you can remove the gate.

Hello, I'm definitely not Kikopup, but I think I can kind of help you out on this one. The trick is to set your dog up for success. Start small. Have someone call him towards themselves with a clicker in hand, and have them click while the dog is coming towards them, not already jumping up. Reward the absence of jumping. Practice that, then raise criteria. Add another person, place treats on the ground when all four of his feet are on the ground.

hi i am a new dog owner, i have a 3.5 month german shepherd. I was wondering if i want to train my dog with the clicker, if there is a possibility to be addicted to it and not give me any attention when i don't have it.?

一樣教狗不撲人 艾蜜莉仍是技高一籌 首先引導狗做對的事~四腳著地 然後加入人進門或表現害怕 所謂的加重干擾練習 重看這支影片心想自己該跟著調整

My dog has the issue of jumping on me and nibbling at my feet 'a lot' he's a golden retriever so he's not little... He's very rough with his play and does not stop long enough for me to reward his decreased jump and biting behavior. Thence, making this difficult. I other thing about my down is that I've been training him while he is tied to his lease. I noticed you do not do this. Is this good or bad? It seems he runs away and loses interest in training and seeks other things when he's not tied.

Petsmart, PetCo, and Amazon all have clickers for sale. They can range from under a dollar to several dollars. If your dog is scared of the loud click, there are quieter clickers available.
